@Onyx Again, never experienced it. I can only conclude that it is uniquely your setup that causes this.

Linux is pretty bad with device connectivity in general.
Of course, since when I connect a keyboard, mouse or USB key, it doesn't make me wait like Windows while it tries to download the appropriate driver from the internet.
It just work, instantly

It's different now! Now, Windows will load up the generic driver, spend some time (between one minute and an hour) then install the "real" driver, causing you to momentarily lose that device out of nowhere.

And if you plug it in a different USB port, it start the whole process again?

@WernerCD huh, why haven't I gifted you an avatar yet? 😕

@Onyx Don't forgot how it fails to change audio devices when you change the OS default audio devices, so every fucking time I connect to Discord it's using the wrong fucking mic and wrong fucking speakers and the only way to fix it is to kill the app and restart it.
-
@pie_flavor Onyx, Pie_flavor has his own reality and it doesn't include your experience, ok? Don't step on his reality.

@blakeyrat Maybe TRWTF is me for having a 16-channel recording interface on my laptop as well as two webcams (one integrated, one external), but launching Discord (or Skype) and expecting it to pick the correct input is like playing Russian Roulette.
TeamSpeak does a really good job of just using whatever you picked last time, so you set it up once and never worry about it again.

Right but the point is WINDOWS ITSELF has an audio device called "default audio device" and if you just use that one you'd get the right one every time.
But Discord fucks it up somehow. Discord also will remember your choice if you set it manually to something other than "default device" but it won't work correctly with "default device" set.

Yes, rather like Windows does.

False, actually. I just leave it on default device and it works just fine.

Until you change the default, and Discord keeps using the old default even though everything else switches to the new one. Then you connect to Discord and you can't hear anything because it's coming through your gaming headset you had set as the default device 3 days ago when you last ran DIscord but hasn't been since about 10 minutes after that.
-
@blakeyrat Nope. Live updates work fine too.
I would not say it works 'just fine' if I had used the barebones level of it once or twice. I say it works 'just fine' when I have attempted to break it in several different ways, and failed.
-
My work still hangs onto this shitshow. Here's my newest list of Skype rage moments:
-
When someone sends an image attachment and I open it, it opens in full screen mode and the "X" on the top right closes the entire Skype (it used to be the image would open in a new window, and clicking the "X" would close THAT instead of all of Skype). The close button on the image itself is on the upper left. Guess how many times I accidentally closed Skype due to this asshattery?
-
The very latest update seems to have some kind of temporal or causal disruption where responses to my messages are retroactively placed ABOVE that message. This has lead to really confusing conversations where it looks like my partner is either mental or knows me so well they can answer my question before I even ask it. WTF Skype? We've had instant messaging technology for decades now and you still manage to fuck this very simple problem that I never got with AIM in 2000.
-
The sync between my desktop and my phone is still unreliable and flaky. Sometimes I get messages sent to my phone but not my desktop, even if I'm on my desktop and my phone's sitting idle on my desk and vice versa. When you're at work and you need shit answered quickly, this is especially bad.
The only good thing I'll say is as soon as 6 months ago at least half the time when we're screensharing, it'd inexplicably fail until we disconnect the call and start over. It's been a long time since I've seen that happen. Gotta appreciate the little stuff, you know?

Is Discord (or were we talking about Skype?) an electron application? Using chromium or whatever in the back end? If so, it sounds very similar to what happens to me with hangouts, except that I can manually redirect audio streams with the mixer.
-

Yes, rather like Windows does.
Windows is looking all over the internet for a working driver for a fuckin USB key
And when you plug the same key into another USB port, it does it all over again.
Of course, YOU have a different experience than everybody else.

iTunes works the same way. (grumble) Everytime I turn the bluetooth speaker on, iTunes has to be restarted.
-
@dcon MechWarrior Online also has that problem, but then again it's a buggy piece of shit so it's not really that surprising.

Wait, so the close button now actually closes Skype? Guess they fixed that at last.

See this notification (disregard the f.lux colors):
Where do you think you click to make Skype close and update; and where do you click to dismiss the notification?
If your answers are "on the blue button that says 'Update'" and "anywhere on the notification" respectively, then: congratulations, you're not on Skype's UX team.
If on the other hand you answered "anywhere on the notification" and "who knows, probably can't be done", then: how long are you working for them, and what the hell is wrong with you, that you hate users so much?
-
@topspin actually, not in that way. You are still online on skype.

You're supposed to click-hold-and-drag the notification off to the side of the screen. Discoverable, I know. It hails from the now when Microsoft made Windows believe everyone would be using their fists on their screen to do things, and thus swiping things away would be "natural".
-
@The_Quiet_One @Zecc Are you on Windows 10? Try the version of Skype that's in the Windows Store. It's not Electron but React Native/ReactXP (welcome to the MS naming department) so it might be slightly better, or equally usefully to us here, worthy of its own WTFs. At the least you get rid of the custom updater.

Does that one even work? Back before Desktop Skype turned into a complete flaming turd, Win10 always tried to hide Desktop Skype and give me the App Store Skype which always failed to run because it wrongly thought I had no webcam.
-
@mott555 It needs permission to see your webcam. Perhaps you disabled webcam access globally in Settings which applies to UWP/WinRT apps only.

I did have a piece of shit software that had a similar thing, where the no button was no-op and wouldn't even close the window, so in that case the answer was yes.

It tells a lot about this world that Electron is one of the saner options for writing portable software…

Saner than what? Even if it's C++ based, heavy and not-quite-native, I'd choose Qt over Electron any day to write portable software.
I'm not even sure I'd chose Electron over Java.

@Bulb NOT TRUE! Some things are Atom.
-
Speaking of discord...
I restarted it for updates and it spat out this error. That's the entire window (with censored sections). There is no retry button. There's also no titlebar or min/max/close buttons, though alt-space does bring up the usual window controls. Apparently I have to restart the whole application to do anything, because closing the window just brings that up again.

I'm not even sure I'd chose Electron over Java.
While Qt is actually portable to mobile these days, it does not have the whipuptitude, and Java is actually not portable on mobile for UI (as there are different frameworks).
I'd go with Qt if I wanted performance, but if I just needed to whip up a UI for otherwise server-based app (which all the communication tools are), Electron is more developer-time-efficient. Also these apps have in-browser version, so they have to write it in HTML+JS anyway and then it's just one version on web, packed with Electron for desktop and packed with Cordova for mobile.
