@HardwareGeek so, you know that Star Trek II got made, yeah? This means Ricardo Montelban and William Shatner were in proximity. Thank Me that John Malkovich wasn't in circulation at the time.

Freezer? What, ain't it cured? Just stick it under the sink.

(It's only lightly cured and already sliced, ready to put onto sandwiches.)

Back in 10-12th year of school i used to store diskettes on the door of my locker by putting them on a big speaker magnet. They always worked for some reason.

Your machine today doesn't have the same amount of memory as your machine of 9 years ago.

If Windows GDI is somehow applied in the background, "out of memory" does not mean what it is supposed to mean. It just means "an error happened", without any specification of the type of error.
Like a LicenseNotFound error.

Like a LicenseNotFound error. The JPEG consortium and their damned floating licenses, always trips me up when viewing photos and the license server is not available.

Status: Had an import video conference in the morning, so I restarted the macbook beforehand to avoid potential wifi problems after sleep. Connection worked fine for the meeting. However, since then it's once again gone from 50Mbps to 0.5 and I've been sitting at the laptop the whole time, so nothing went to sleep in between. Meaning that's not the cause of this shit, either, and now I just don't know... Disabling / enabling wifi didn't work this time, but clicking the button to get a new DHCP lease did.
Fuck, this is getting frustrating.

@topspin Overheated network chip? We had such a weird issue in our devices, too. But there, network was completely not available for some time.

Doubt it. No idea about the temperature directly on the board, but the laptop doesn't run hot at all.

You could try having a look in the system log (with Console.app). Sometimes that has enough info in it to let you point the finger at the problem.
Right now, you don't appear to even know if it is a problem with the macbook or with the wifi router, or if it is an evil combination of the two.

I'm clueless as to what to look for.

It's the macbook. The phone connected to wifi only (cell data turned off) shows the router running at full speed. On the flipside, tethering from the macbook over the phone is also significantly slower than running mobile data directly over the phone.

I tried but I don't follow. It's the same machine with more memory (video and system) and both tests run yesterday.

See, more != same.
(At least I assume )
-
@Zenith software these days spends memory like it’s Monopoly money, and the platforms of a few years ago were far less resource-hungry for very little (relatively) loss of functionality.

I had to normalize uri strings once to make a model fit in memory.

Full disclaimer: for some reason I didn't realize it was the same machine. I blame it on being tired.
But, yes, the joke is that a machine 9 years ago had less memory than today; which just makes the out of memory error even more idiotic.
-
@Zecc I assumed it wasn’t the same machine but simply a riff of “ten year old machine with ten year old specs vs current machine specs” because current software is proportionately worse at efficient resource use.
-
@Arantor Why use a static opaque image when you can use an alpha-blended animated SVG? Yes, it's going to require an enormous amount of machinery to make work, but you're already running in Electron, yes?

They are kinda mutually exclusive. Teaching an intern proper respect for a senior isn't really compatible with the intern taking the piss out of the senior.

Yes it is, you can respect someone senior and still take the piss out of them
-
@HardwareGeek said in The Official Status Thread:
. Teaching an intern proper respect for a senior
Yep, they need to know two things:
- Don't try to teach them anything
- Don't try to learn anything from them
In any environment where the proper respect is purely a function of seniority.
The next step is figuring out that senior's experience divisor- is it 4 months of experience 45 times, or the somewhat more rare 1 year of experience 15 times. This helps to figure how far away from @HardwareGeek 's company to look for a proper job.

Have you considered changing your name? It's a time-honored "coming to America" tradition for exactly this reason! Or was, back in the early 1900s.

You should be serious. Polish names are a crime against phonetics.
