Status: Finally converting a very specific part of our code to tag data batches in UTC instead of local time.
The complicated part isn't generating UTC stamps; it's the start of the pipeline it actually knows UTC.
The complicated part also isn't parsing UTC stamps in the part of the code which still tags in localtime.
The complicated part is that said receiving part has to be capable of receiving both UTC-tagged and localtime-tagged data. Even at the same time. Because near-zero downtime upgrades. And of course ideally batches should be tagged in UTC all over the pipeline but that project has been sitting on the 'not enough dev resources available' shelf for literally a decade now.
-
@PleegWat just slap Z at the end of UTC timestamps as permitted by ISO 8601.

Well that didn't work. Did you know that showing the login prompt apparently requires disk IO? Weird, huh?
Anyways, fucking fucking it harder, switched to using two gorram USB drives (dug out an old hard drive for the donor instead of using a virtual disk) and....
Should have done that from the beginning. Fuckin' hell...

Really, Windows?
Also, why is there no "Ignore all and continue" button? I have to babyshit this crap because this dialog (which is barely useful) is blocking the operation!
Should have done it in the commandline, that at least wouldn't sit there like a retarded puppy waiting for my finger to stroke the magic button...

to Confluence for breaking all the links (to sub-pages) in the documentation when we moved it into the externally-visible space. And hiding the sidebar when you go into edit mode, so getting the links turned into a game of multiple windows and click and paste.

Status: Ever since I bought my Windows 10 Pro license, I was looking for a justification for paying extra for Pro instead of going with Home. Finally I found it. Native Windows Docker containers require Hyper-V, and Hyper-V is only available on Pro and up.
I'm still wondering where the hell this random seller on Amazon got their hands on those legit Windows 10 Pro boxes and why he was willing to sell them for only $100 apiece.

@Tsaukpaetra yeah, but how? I want a $12 Windows too.

Laundered keys from scams, most likely.

Or just discounted real licenses which are not supposed to be resold.
-
@Tsaukpaetra that's the thing - it's not just a key, it's the entire box and the signature Microsoft flash drive with holographic logo. A 100% legit copy, although not necessarily of 100% legit origin.
Edit: @Zerosquare this is a box license so it can be freely resold. And I didn't have trouble activating it so it's unlikely to be a used copy. It was factory-wrapped in plastic, too.

@Gąska Theft is a thing. As is, more legitimately, selling stock bought at fire same prices from retailers going out of business.

On the other hand, after tearing my hair out looking for any useful pictures of Neopteryx (most notable feature apparently being one of the three rarest bats in the entire world) and mentioning these troubles to someone at least a year later, suddenly they had no difficulty finding a photo because something had been published just two months after I was done.

Status: Oh boy does this situation suck.
So right around the start of COVID, when this late shift garbage started, we had five people and a manager on truck nights. A couple weeks ago, two and a half plus the manager. Last week, one and a half plus the manager. Tonight, as I walked in, the manager walked out, as in quit. Friday is going to suck donkey balls.
I can only imagine the conversation that I'll be having with the store manager over the weekend. They've been wanting me to go full-time for years. I can't cope with another full-time job. But I can't exactly turn it down right now either...

The 8–11 change isn't very large anyway, and is mostly covered by tweaking tooling and dependencies. (Going from 7 to 8 was larger, mostly because lambdas give you wholly new ways to think about how to do programs.)

It's not just 7 to 8. They'd have to upgrade the entire stack including the devops side. I suspect swapping in the runtime wouldn't hurt too much but spring 3 and lower break at a sniff of lamdas and default interfaces. Fuck knows how weblogic will react. I haven't heard from devops yet so they're either on holiday or good at their jobs.

Status: About to build a big-ass WTF hack.
Right now I have Qt-based graphical user-interface that runs a long-running background computation in a separate process (or optionally parallelized into several processes). It displays progress, detailed status and finally results in the UI and everything is processed asynchronously (as it should so not to freeze the UI) using
QProcess
and Qt's signals/slots. Nothing's ever perfect, but I'm kind of satisfied with the way it works. However, I now have to add quite a few things to it and don't have the time to do it right. Instead of running one program I now have to run several other programs as pre- and post-processing (some long-running, some pretty quick), and run all of that in a loop, so the whole thing is very much sequential in nature. I don't have co-routine support yet, I don't want to build a huge-ass state-machine over many functions with the signal/slot mechanism, nor come up with some funky continuation-passing stuff.
So the current plan for an absolute hack is: run everything synchronously and in a loop, except for re-using the original part which is async but synchronously wait on it. And since that completely blocks everything, put this in a background thread like it's 1999. So it's background thread -> sync processing -> async processing -> external processes. At least the plan is to revisit this after the deadline.
I already feel dirty.

Yeah, last I checked WebLogic does not work with later than 8.

That's probably due to the removal of the JEE classes. That's what I was alluding to with the need to update “dependencies” (and yes, there are drop-in replacements).

It's usually the ordinary goblins that have the bad posture. Hobgoblins tend to stand tall in order to better wield large weapons.

STATUS Christ spring aop, even in the ancient version I'm using, is a fucking god awful rabbit hole. I'm suprised I haven't seen more abuse of it in my time. Seeing plenty of it now.
-
@DogsB The main thing limiting abuse of Spring AOP is usually just how fucking terrifying it is. Also, it's a bit of a pain to set up right so that all the method interception works correctly, with a whole bunch of weird caveats. It's usually significantly easier to use more focussed variants such as method security annotations.
