    • de Blob 2 is a jumping platformer where your character (de Blob) needs to paint the world which has been made completely white by color-hating black ink enemies. To do this, you need to absorb paint and touch the surfaces you want to paint, sometimes with any color, sometimes with specific colors. It will paint any surface it touches with the currently absorbed color whether it has already been painted correctly or not, so you need to avoid absorbing black from the enemies trying to hit you, as well as mixing in the wrong colors. Falling on water will make you lose your paint, which could either be a good thing or bad.

I found the game quite fun, and I love the soundtrack (I've posted it before in SotD). The instruments are mixed according to the color of your character, which is a nice touch. I've finished de Blob 2 first, on PS3. I've only got the first de Blob recently on GOG and I haven't finished yet.

    • Sensible Soccer I've never played but I know by fame. From what I've heard it is a couch PvP football game which is rather fun even if not realistic. But don't take my word for it.

  • Lots of free stuff that I found out about today

Postal, free on GOG and Steam:

Sony Play At Home: a bunch of games for free on PSN. The blog post won't stop scrolling back to the top for me, but it includes Ratchet & Clank PS4, Abzu, Enter the Gungeon, Rez Infinite, and some others. Also, Horizon Zero Dawn will be free starting on April 19.

e: Better link and list for Play At Home:

    • Subnautica
    • Enter the Gungeon
    • Abzu
    • The Witness
    • Rez Infinite
      PSVR games:
    • Astro Bot
    • Moss
    • Thumper
    • Paper Beast

  • @hungrier Rez Infinite is also PSVR. If you're on a drug trip, or want to feel like you're on a drug trip, it's amazing.

@kazitor I haven't played the second one, but have a lot of hours on enemy unknown. Very good implementation of the whole base building, resource management turn based strategy genre

Have you played the original? This has nice graphics and voice acting, but as an X-COM game it really suffers in the gameplay department, and one of its core game mechanics is a complete betrayal of the spirit of the franchise.

You know that thing it keeps throwing at you, where aliens attack two places at once and you need to pick one mission to go on and auto-fail the other one because your squad can't be in two places at once? That is not how an X-COM game works! In the original, you are limited only by your skill at the game. You could build as many bases as you want, each base could field multiple planes and multiple squads, etc, so if aliens attack 5 places at once, you could very well have 5 squads available to respond to each one.

Seeing the reboot get this detail so thoroughly wrong, and then stuff like Chimera Squad double down on this atrocious forced-incompetence mechanic, severely annoys me. I want another real X-COM game!

It's been a while, but no, it's more like the original X-COM in that you can build a bunch of bases and have ships in all of them, with several crews.
I didn't play it for long because SQUIRREL, I plan to get back to it again.
However, there are three factions you cooperate with, and they really don't like each other so the deeper your relationship is with one, the more problems you'll have with the others.
The tactics maps are the same few ones, not procedurally generated which is a bit of a bummer, but you get the geoscape at least.

I would think maybe? If it just presents as a normal controller that happens to not actually have any inputs I think it would accidentally work.

Someone try it! Or buy me a PS4 and vibration unit for me to try it!

I wasn't planning on going down this rabbit hole, but...sadly, it doesn't. It shows as a special USB device and accepts one command that changes the intensity of the vibrations. It would also set the LED colors, but LEDs weren't installed on the production version. There's empty spots for them on the board, though.

At some point in the late 2000s a guy reverse-engineered the protocol and made a clone of the hardware with lights installed. Neither work with Rez Infinite or (due to a device-side USB bug) Windows 10, but there are similar products that do appear as controllers as well as a framework for controlling such devices via software that supports the Trance Vibrator and its clone.

That's the Old Hardware of the Day Report. Now back to the game deals!

It's a pretty decent 2D platformer with tower defense elements, where you can toggle between multiple characters who can each construct different defense and attack blocks.

It's a different kind of game. Project Cars 1 and 2 are more advanced simulators. 90% of the cars are explicitly race cars and everywhere you can drive is a race track.

A lot of how to be good at the game is knowing how to adjust your car's suspension, transmission, brakes, etc. It's not really something you see in Burnout.

Project Cars 3 is much more of an arcade game, similar to Burnout or Forza or something like that.

The real sequel to Project Cars 2 is Automobilista 2, which uses an improved version of the same engine, but has different cars and tracks for licensing reasons. It's also on sale right now. Project Cars 2 has a more mainstream collection of cars and tracks, so that's the game I recommend.

Are you playing using a controller or an actual wheel and pedal setup?

When I played the game a lot, I was traveling a lot, which means I mostly played it using an Xbox controller.

Half the battle of getting a racing simulation like this to work is setting up the control inputs to so that they work correctly. If you want, I can send you my controller setup.

Controller. A good wheel costs almost as much as an actual car so why even bother.

I'm not sure how much it's going to help since my controller is a cheapo Logitech that doesn't have enough precision for this kind of fine tuning to have measurable effect.

I use a USB XBox 360 controller plugged into my laptop. They are super cheap and probably comparable to your Logitech. I use these settings in PCars2 and AMS2.

    Steering Deadzone: 7
    Steering Sensitivity: 17
    Throttle Deadzone: 10
    Throttle Sensitivity: 30
    Brake Deadzone: 10
    Brake Sensitivity: 75
    Clutch Deadzone: 10
    Clutch Sensitivity: 25
    Speed Sensitivity: 95
    Controller Dampening: 67
    Controller Vibration: 50
    Minimum Shift Time: 0

The caveat for Automobilista 2 is that with these settings, the brakes overheat a lot faster than in PCars 2. So on the individual car settings, you should leave the Brake Duct Openings more open than you think you need to. In AMS2, I normally start at 100% open, then close them a little if I can't get the brakes to heat up during practice.

Good luck, man. I hope you like the game.

DiRT 5 (:mocking_spongebob:) is on Bungle Choice this month. I wonder if it's any good?

    ***

I'm happy to report that Forza Hujviņzin 4 just fucked off my wishlist. It sat there for a long time, because it kind of looked good, countryside and that street in Edinburgh. Checked it with my peg leg and goddamn it's fucking shite. Road discovered, near miss, near hit, drift point printer go brrr, some other points go brrr, ate your salad. Oi, sunshine, how about you let me see the bloody road, mate, yeah? Maybe that crap can be turned off, but then the entire premise of a "festival" run by soy hipsters on public roads is goofy. Much like any arcade racer in the past 10 years.

BRB, installing NFS Heat, since I've finally upgrayyed to Win-10-nic. It's probably another stupid shit, but I gotta tick the box.

I wonder if Hot Pursuit Remastered has actually been any kind of remastered? No Origin trial, no peg leg version, but that one was last of the decent ones.
