So your kink is getting your grammar corrected? It's... weird, but we don't judge.

No, that’s the grammar judge’s job. The grammar police is only the first step to ending up there.

there's basically no accountability on the ground. you've got grammar cops tutting people left and right.

Leveraging over two decades of cutting edge work on search engines, building on those that have come before, and looking to the future, today Google has changed the world forever
-
@hungrier What do you need a search bar for when all of your catalogue fits on a single page?

@Deadfast said in Internet of shit:

Padding the catalog items with huge ass images is how they make it not fit on a single page. The search feature is just a shortcut to avoid scrolling through the images.
-
Not everyone is into huge asses, after all.

@hungrier Nice to see Google basing Stadia on Epic Games Store, which also came without search functionality in the beginning.

That one is a bit special, as they manufacturer does offer a way to use your own supplies for free. So they're not very good at doing that whole IoT thing.
-
@Zerosquare Indeed. The manual even tells you explicitly how to use other solutions besides the cassette. Can't fault them for hyping up their own solution as long as there are alternatives.

Also “or even use a power bank”...
Right, which USB chargeable device doesn’t work with a power bank?

@topspin said in Internet of shit:

I vaguely remember that the controllers for one video game console didn't (the PS3, maybe?).
-
@Zerosquare Iirc the PS3 controller refuses to charge from anything other than a PS3. Which is really annoying, as if battery is running low in the controller I’m using I got a power socket with a USB charger and all charging cables next to me so I don’t have to get up from the sofa. Just plug in the appropriate cable and keep going. Which works for every controller except the PS3 one. And even worse: it refuses to charge even when it’s off. Full retard controller.
-
@Atazhaia I have a PS3 controller charger somewhere. It can charge up to two controllers.
But yeah, it's purposely built hardware.

@TimeBandit is there some kind of consumer’s Darwin Award that you get when you buy shit like that?
-
@TimeBandit Missed opportunity. Why go for a single subscription when you can do multiple tiers? You pay $12 a month for the standard subscription, where the airbag inflates 50% - enough to soften the blow, but it'll still hurt. $20/month will get you 80%, and the premium package ($24/month) will not only get you full inflation, but the company will also send you some flowers to the hospital bed if you still end up in one.

There's no such thing (I'm told) - for example, you wouldn't have heard of this product if it weren't for the

Hmm. Yeah, might be right there.

There's no such thing (I'm told)
It only goes so far.
Plus there is actually a non-subscription cost which a quick Google suggests ultimately costs the same price as other own-outright options.

Other own-outright solutions don’t come with extortion schemes and IoS enabled payment processing built into safety systems.

That's what I mean. There's an option to just own the thing for a one-off payment.

For the subscription thing, I'm wondering how/when they check whether the vest is "enabled" or not. I doubt you want to do that in the moment, so it'll probably have to periodically check. Means that you occasionally have to let it connect to the interwebs? (What about the own-outright option? Will it still need to occasionally check for permission?)

It probably sends you a text message every now and then to ask for 2FA.

No it's at the start when it makes other checks to make sure it's ready

The real solution here is obviously to buy a car like a normal person instead of a motorbicycle

Start of the journey? Basically gets back to the same question -- what if you have reception issues or whatever and they can't contact the mothership?
(Regarding the own-outright - you can of course make that tiered as well.)

I'd never buy something like this, but I don't have an issue with something that gives you the option at purchase of either buying it outright or getting a significant discount on the upfront purchase price and paying a subscription instead. It's all known upfront.
Now if they were taking a product that didn't require a subscription when people bought it and suddenly adding one then it's a different matter but this isn't happening here.

Yeah, I can probably live with those options as well.
The one thing that I'd be worried about is that the own-outright option is badly implemented, where it would still check with the mothership periodically (think: own-outright is a €0/month perpetual subscription under the hood).
-
@TimeBandit Yeah, just no. I bought a Hövding (basically an airbag for your head if you don't like bicycle helmets). While that device is not on the cheap side (though the really good helmets with Wavecel are not that much cheaper either) it
a) works out of the box
b) using the app is optional and
c) they give you a 33% rebate if you need a new one because the old one has activated.

I'd probably dig into that further if I was intending on buying it for sure.

Maybe @Rhywden's riding around with a Swedish bin on his head instead of a bicycle helmet

Yet.
This isn’t a service they made into a subscription model, it’s a one off item. It makes no sense to have a subscription for a hammer either, except as a rip off scheme.

Airbag trigger already is too fast for ICANN, iirc they use chemical triggers, a low explosive burnline is faster than a wire
