@DMBot roll 1d20 with advantage

@error Assume: 'keep 3'.
Rolling for stats in 5e, you have to roll 4d6 and discard the lowest value.

Oh. Easy feature. Is there ever any other selection criteria? Discard highest, perhaps?

@DMBot trying this again
Roll 1d20 with advantage

OK, not sure how it got stuck in a loop...

@Mason_Wheeler it replies to upvoting, too. I could get it to post a lot more, I think, but don't want to DoS the thread.

I'm far from an expert, but what I encountered in research the last few days:
- Advantage: 2d20, keep highest
- Disadvantage: 2d20, keep lowest
- Halfling luck: when a d20 for an attack, ability, or save rolls to a 1, you can reroll it and must use the new value.

Though you've applied these rules specifically to 2d20 and d20... I see Mason specifying 1d20. Are other dice compatible with these modifiers? What if he rolls 3d20 with advantage - do I roll 6d20k3? 2d20k1+2d20k1+2d20k1?

I've seen a fair bit of 3d6 with reroll 1s, or even reroll 1s and 2s.

OK, and what syntax would that use in a roll command?

I will hopefully have a completed character by tomorrow.
-
@DMBot wait. if there were two of you, would you play d&d?

Additionally: is it recursive? If you get a streak of 1s, does it keep rerolling them?

Reliable skill: any roll of 9 or less can be treated as a 10
-
@error I don't think multiple d20 happens? Advantage/disadvantage applies to skill checks which are normally 1d20. If either (but not both) applies, you roll 2d20 and take the higher or lower as appropriate. Multiple advantage/disadvantage doesn't happen.
I'd suggest appending
a
for advantage,d
for disadvantage, andl
for luck, then assuming they apply to each die separately. But I don't know if there are more rules I simply haven't ran into.I'm not even sure how a luck/advantage combination resolves.

Maybe k2 for keep 2 highest, k-2 for keep 2 lowest, advantage is just a sugar for 2d20k1 and disadvantage an alias for 2d20k-1. r1,2: reroll 1s and 2s? Then luck is d20r1.
Reliable skill: seems like a min operator. d20min10? Implies a max operator as well.
-
@error sounds like a plan.
-
@error yes - it does. These were used to produce npc, elite, and player stats. these random trees all eventually terminate, btw, the probability of them not vanishes exponentiallyas long as you disallow r>3!. 3d6r2 seems to encapsulate an alternate, capped but amped, high-power character (player) stat roll command nicely. 3d6r1 gives close to what was called the "elite array" stats.
-
@Gribnit Wouldn't 3d6r1 then just be equivalent to 3d5+3?
Halfling luck specifically prescribes you're only allowed to reroll once.
-
@Gribnit said in WTDWTF RPG game pre-sign-up and shit:
, the probability of them not vanishes exponentialy.
As long as the base probability < 1. I should probably add some validation that your selection criteria doesn't exclude all possible rolls.
-
@PleegWat it probably gives a very similar or identical mean, but iirc the distribution is different

I would honestly exclude probabilities > 0.5 of reroll, to force rapid conclusion

@error before the algorithm even knew what was happening. yep. it's already returning a value. stupid little algorithm loves to run.

OK, I'll work on this tonight. I think we've outgrown the original design and I plan to implement some kind of syntax tree parser.
-
@Gribnit If roll 3d6 (1, 4, 5) and you're allowed to reroll ones, do you reroll-with-repeats only the die that rolled one or do you reroll all three dice?
In the former case, the dice are independent, and 1d6r1 is definitely equivalent to 1d5+1.
-
@PleegWat they're independent. The lack of available d5s is I think what drives the system being re-roll based. Our best efforts with knives came up short, and yes, we had d10s and d20s but fuck division, we're here to roll dice, add, and multiply.
-
@PleegWat said in WTDWTF RPG game pre-sign-up and shit:

I feel like the probabilities of { 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 } are uniform in the first case, but 2 is twice as likely in the second.No, I'm an idiot. Probabilities are hard, let's go shopping.
-
@PleegWat with halfling luck you only get to reroll once, so a 1 is still possible but less likely
