Status: Changing the subject entirely...
When I moved into my house last year, I of course immediately ordered internet service. In addition to not giving me the service I thought I was ordering (but that's a different story; apparently "Gigabit fiber" means "fiber to the box a block away, and 75Mb (but really about 30) ADSL from the box to my house), the "customer service" asshole up-sold me to an internet TV plan I didn't want at all, without mentioning it was a separate service (I thought he was just trying to figure out how much bandwidth I actually needed for streaming to my desktop/phone, as opposed to the 1Gb I was asking for) for extra money. I immediately signed up for auto-pay (I think it was mandatory for internet service), and my cash flow situation was such that I didn't really need to pay close attention to my online banking, so it took a while to notice that I was getting two payments deducted every month, one for SNT and another for SNT TV. When I finally noticed it, it was way past the point I could cancel without an early termination fee.
I had no TV on which to watch the service that I've been paying ~$50/month for 10 months. I never even took the set-top box out of its packaging.
Well, I finally bought a TV, the smallest 4K TV I could find (which would, if I were to attach the legs its supposed to be standing on, would still be about 3cm too tall for the cabinet I have to put it in). I removed the box and connected everything up. After reading three TOS and privacy policies that make War and Peace look like a haiku (TL;DR: We'll give your PII to anybody we want, including advertisers who are allowed to sell it to other advertisers. Don't agree? Don't use the device. ), and waiting while all the firmware to be updated, it works.
Started channel-flipping. 5 minutes after getting it working, determined that there is nothing to watch.

I'm surprised if took you that long to determine this.
Ever since on-demand video became a thing, television has declined in practicality.

For $50/month it should’ve been dead long ago.
-
@topspin You're not wrong. I stopped paying for cable ~20 years ago. I had no intention of paying for cable (or internet) TV ever again. But asshole up-sold me without my realizing it, so I'm stuck with it for the 24-month minimum term.

So I managed to almost, but not quite kill my car today. Google pointed me down a country road, and about 10 miles from anywhere there was this underpass under a railroad. One of those little narrow-but-deep, one-lane types. Full of water. I decided (since the other option was to drive 10 miles back to the next turn and take another route, to chance it in my little Civic.
I made it through, but by the end I could feel the tires not gripping and water was up splashing the windshield over the length of the hood. Too close. Way too stinking close. Next time I'm taking the long route via the freeway.

Status: So glad I finally have a day off this coming Monday.
I have been working 7-day weeks since at least April. For some time prior to the 7-day weeks starting, I had been working 6-day weeks. There's nothing I want to do more on Monday than sleep for 12 hours. But it's the last day to really throw at finishing and transferring data into my new accounting system before 2020 income taxes are due. And I have to help my mother assemble an exercise bike because she's still recovering from surgery to fix whatever was wrong with her hands. And maybe if I have time have something that at least looks like it works in that stupid PowerShell script that was due Friday. So damn it I have my work cut out for me.

A well-disliked ISP here used to do something like this (advertise on FTTH rates, while deploying mostly FTTLA instead). One of their competitors sued them for deceptive advertising practices and won.

@Zenith: I thought you worked in the public sector? What kind of government is forcing you to work for weeks with no off days?

Yeah, there's five regular days there. Then two weekend days and one weeknight part time for an essential business. Plus whatever time is left over divided between my collectibles business and applying/interviewing for jobs. Right before the pandemic I was trying to work freelance remote, fixing a completely bungled WPF application from India with no test data and a "QA" contact that was doing the modern day equivalent of a photo of a printout on a wooden table. Dude was taking videos of his screen on his phone and texting them to me. Couldn't follow instructions for shit either so they were worthless to boot. So of course I was also fielding calls from the people that hired me explaining why I wasn't making as much progress as they expected too.
Edit: I don't know what I hate most about development. It used to be "fix everything without changing anything." Basically "make the politics of failure work again" stuff. Lately it's been the sheer volume of idiotic process that's crippling to me but has no effect on the needful doer's virtual firehose of diarrhea.

I managed to talk my mother through finishing going through hood/window-level water with an old Ford* Fiesta.
Later than trip we heard splashing and when I looked back I saw a magazine floating on the little pool of water which had formed at the backseat's feet. We didn't realize it, but a lot of water came into the car. We later had to put in a kiln for several hours to dry it.
I suggest you check if your car is dry.
*Indeed.

@Zecc yeah, none really got in that I could tell. Although good idea to check.

@topspin Ours has almost all gone now. Just in time for projected significant rainfall mid-week…

Fuck SAP. Srsly.
I've been trying all weekend to get the classloader to see this class. Everything looks like it should see it. But I get ClassNotFoundException.
The build process is , as it generates a bunch of configuration and code files from other configuration files, so there's this level of indirection where I can only change the build configuration indirectly by changing the build configuration generator configuration.
-
Much of this is because dependency management in Java is a nightmare compared to .NET. Class files in a folder hierarchy or zipped up in jar files, with potential duplication of classes across jar files, and that's before you get to custom classloaders doing tricksy bullshit..

Custom classloaders are almost always the problem. It's very difficult to write them to be BS free.

So they've exported the HandlerAdapterBuilderFactory pattern out to the build process

Status: I added input for an optional field in the GUI by using a checkbox and a text field. Leaving the box unchecked means no value is supplied, so to make it more clear that in this case the text field is not used I enabled/disabled it depending on the state of the box. Fine so far. Except by mistake I bound the check/uncheck not to the text field's enable/disable but to the checkbox itself. Now I have a checkbox that when unchecked also disables itself, with no way to check/enable it again.
Feels like I produced something similar to this:

@Zecc Several of my top projects are blocked for various reasons so I skimmied out and have been spending time converting a semi-private (one other user) dashboard from the direct DB access backend that's going away to the REST interface which is the new hotness.
It's now all working except for the bits which aren't easily accessible in the rest interface. And it is, of course, slower.
Next step (when I feel bored enough again): Doing two REST requests at the same time.

Work? I'm on vacation. MLK Day. Doesn't all US tech get that off?
-
@dcon No. I think I've only ever worked at one company that had MLK Day as a company holiday. (I never got the day off in school, either, because my entire school career was before MLK's birthday was made a holiday.)

I will say that, having been off the juice for a few days, I'm sleeping better and focusing better. But I get headaches now and I kind of miss the rush.
