And you need to port a path library for this?!
Try working with the 7zip command line and ask that question again.
Edit: It's not so much a full library as 7-8 functions I wrote to get around the weirdness and I'm only porting the 2-3 that apply here.

I've done that and it's not so bad. What happened to Powershell, that you're back to using BAT?

@hungrier This is for another project. I didn't expect such a fight from archiving a folder. Now it's personal.

What's good for the goose (hur dur MVC/Angular is the only way) is good for the gander (hur dur BAT or bust), right?
In order for me to do exactly what I want the "easy" way, I would have to port the very C# code that I'm trying to zip into a PowerShell script. That means jamming the literal C# code into Add-Type with no IDE assistance or fighting the equally bizarre syntax of PowerShell. The way I see it, this is the path of least resistance and the sooner I defeat it the sooner I can go back to programming a real language.

Or you could wrap your code in a console program and call it from VS post build...
I get a feeling you just like doing things the hard way, so you can bitch about it.
-
@Zenith Was your invocation any more complicated than
7z a output.7z "c:\giev\me\the\codez"
?
-
@hungrier said in The Official Status Thread:

?Yes. It needs to name the file with a date, set internal date options, set a password, know where the backups were going (inside the project), how to exclude those backups, how to exclude multiple compilation artifacts, ensure that the root folder in the archive matched the root folder in the archive, and do all of the path logic so I can copy it from one project to another without changing anything (except the password I guess).

-
@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

That part, at least, doesn't seem difficult.
-
@HardwareGeek Oh it doesn't until you realise that the two statements below create differently structured archives.
7z.exe myarchive.7z -i!"C:/myfolder/*"
7z.exe myarchive.7z -i!"C:/myfolder/"
Also the exclude switch can't handle absolute paths...
Edit: I also have one that, for the life of me, I can't figure out why this was happening.
7z.exe "C:/users/Zenith/Desktop/Backups/archive.7z" -ir!"C:/users/Zenith/Desktop/Project/" -xr!"Project/Backups/*.7z"
It decided it would include not justProject/
but an entirely different tree all the way up toC:/users/Zenith/Desktop/Somewhere/Someplace/lazy/clean/up/by/hiding/stuff/in/dated/folder/old/Project/
as well. Ther
is for Recursive and the documentation strongly suggests it's downward, like if you have a root folder and want to include/exclude all of the *.bat files anywhere inside of it (not outside of it like the example is doing).

I heard this many times this year and I really don't understand it. Do people not work when wfh, so it's just like vacation? Or do they have to leave home to not work compulsively?
I don't get it. You take a day off = you can sleep as long as you want and you can do what you want. This is very different from wfh, at least for me.

@MrL I assume he means we're not allowed to go to someplace warm and sunny, or go skiing, or visit family, or any of the various things one might typically due during a winter vacation. While a "staycation" (stay-at-home vacation) is different from wfh, it's still being stuck in the same house/apartment we haven't left for the last 9 months and are thoroughly sick of. If we're stuck at home, unable to do anything interesting, anyway, might as well work and get paid for it.
-
@HardwareGeek If you're not too busy, it seems like you're practically burning vacation days. That's probably a stronger influence if PTO can roll over multiple years. And if you're paid out for unused time off, wasting them like that is also . If I wasn't going to get pestered for a doctor's note, I'd take more of my sick time instead.

Status: According to Steam Friends List, I'm playing Deus Ex: GOTY Edition. Look at the main Steam window. It says I've played 111 hours. Reality: I played the tutorial for maybe an hour last Thursday; I've not even thought about it since. I know Steam counts play time when I'm doing something else (like sleeping) while the game is idle, but this is the first time I've seen it failing to recognize that I've actually quit the game and the game process isn't even running (according to Task Manager).
-
@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

I live in CA
While coworkers who live in other states have to use-it-or-lose-it (unless they get manager approval, and then only 1 wk rolls, and then they still have to it in the 1st 3mo of the next year), CA rolls over up to 175% of the time you can earn. (We don't lose it after that - we just don't earn it anymore - subtle legal distinction)
-
@dcon said in The Official Status Thread:

Legally, your employer can give you vacation under any terms agreed in your employment agreement, including limiting accrual to a maximum amount (175% of annual amount, in your case), or no paid vacation at all. But once they've given it to you, it's like earned but not-yet-paid salary; it's yours, and they can't take it away under any circumstances.

Edit: correct. My reputation is approximately 68k greater than my apparent net worth.

@dcon It's a thing in the public sector too. I can save up several weeks of both. What's sad is that, when I really was busy and productive, it was easy to take time off, but now that I'm not allowed to do much, it's the 3rd degree when I want to take half a sick day because an appliance/vehicle broke down or maybe I just feel like crap.
-
@dcon said in The Official Status Thread:

Mine were always in their crates at night, so they weren't able to jump on the bed, or whatever, to wake me up. I suppose they might have made sufficient noise to wake me up if they got hungry enough or needed to relieve themselves badly enough, but I never slept that late. Otherwise, they were perfectly happy to sleep late, too — they were happy to sleep pretty much all night and all day, unless there was a good reason (food, pets, or walkies) to be awake.

This happens all the time, especially if you launch a VR title when SteamVR isn't running, because for bullshit reasons it will count SteamVR as the original launching game. And since it kinda sits there in the background, it's easy to rack up those hours...

No, not VR — I don't think. I don't have any VR hardware. I think I have one VR title in my library, although Steam doesn't appear to have a separate category for VR games any more, and I don't see anything with VR in the game name, so .
Edit: Also, clicking the button in Steam does nothing.

Why not make an inline task that derives from
ToolTask
? It'll live in the project file just like the batch script, but you have access to all of the MSBuild properties and item metadata as well as the freedom to work in C# without any PowerShell nonsense or BAT insanity. If you wanted, you could also huck it in a$(SomeName).targets
file and just include it in the main project file.
-
*sigh* TV logic.
I can accept than you're out of radio range to send a message from location A to location C, and that you need to meet your friends at location B which is closer to C and has a more powerful radio tower.
But I can't also accept that you're sending ahead a radio message from A to B to say you're going there.

Usually a lack of tools. In this case, I want to zip a copy of my source code on every build (excluding junk e-mail/uploaders think is malicious). So all I have is Visual Studio's post-build command line and the 7zip command line.
Write a small executable in your favorite language, and call it from the post-build command with appropriate parameters. That's far easier.
-
@TwelveBaud The project would have to be .NET 4. I have a .NET 4 compiler but I was waiting to set up a new PC and that's on hold until the Windows CD magically reappears from wherever it disappeared to. Until then, it's just Visual Studio 2008...

Also status: I can't launch Deus Ex if Steam thinks I'm already playing it and, as I mentioned earlier, the Stop button doesn't make Steam think I'm not playing it. I wonder how many thousands of hours of play time I can rack up without actually playing it if I just let Steam continue to do its thing.

Not that much, Windows will reboot eventually
-
@TimeBandit Yes, but apparently after rebooting I can just launch the game and immediately quit without actually playing, but Steam will resume counting play time. Also, the obsolete version of Windows on this machine doesn't reboot until I tell it to (or it crashes or there's a power failure, both of which are quite rare).

- VirtualPC plus Windows 2000 for MacOSX 10.4 Tiger (oops)
- ancient PSX games (Mega Man 8, Medal of Honor, Spiderman, etc)
- a NOS dictaphone made in Japan
- more new Zip disks
- six new Unicomp (modern Model-M) keyboards, plus half a dozen others I rescued from some place or another
- dozens of new LabelFlash discs
- three computers worth of components, including LabelFlash drives for aforementioned discs
Not sure which is worse, that I was so terrified of Trusted Computing or that I really thought I'd be selling software on burned CDs. At the time it was all the rage to write collection tracking software and I thought mine was pretty decent. Then everybody started doing that crap online like everything else.
- a large unopened box from NewEgg that predates the order history I can lookup on their site
There's about a six year gap between when I would've lost my college e-mail (and its linked NewEgg account) and when my personal account records pick up on their site. The nearest I can figure from e-mail is that it's probably a toner cartridge for the Xerox. But still, wow.
