Who the fuck maps network servers to floppy drives letters?
16 year old me. And the driving force of to change it to anything else and retrain the family is just too great.
At the time I thought it was poetic, the "be" drive, where everything just existed.
It doesn't cause any issues regardless, it's been decades since any machine I have has had more than one floppy disk drive.
I was actually expecting someone to comment on the space in the share name, which is a relic from when the whole NAS was an NSLU2 device with a single 500gb external USB hard drive (fucking massive!).
Indeed, if you navigate to https://Tsaukpaetra.com the footer will mention this tidbit, even though it's been ages since that was true...
I should probably remake my homepage sometime...

Ah, yes, the "You don't have access to that server for some reason uhh what should we say oh "The local device name is already in use" yea that'll get em, heh" message

I still can't read this without thinking of various variations of H2O or Halloween H20.
Wouldn't you fuck a mermaid?

Same here. I got rid of the last machine I had with two floppy drives before Millennium Bug didn't do hardly any damage, and it will soon be fifteen years since the last time I bought a machine that had even one floppy drive. (The motherboards I bought in 2011 didn't even have a slot on the motherboard to plug a classic floppy ribbon cable into...)(1)
(1) I'm aware of such oddities as USB-connected floppy drives, and I have no wish to bother with them. I must go round some time and throw out any surviving trays of floppy disks...

However, the bits on your floppies have probably all rotted away.

I've been meaning to post about this. When I'm using Linux I tend to do a vertical maximize (KDE: middle click the maximize button). I've found various sites (and think I remember doing this in the past) that SHIFT+ + would do the same thing to the active Window. See, for instance (OK, not definitive, but at least it's someone talking about it):
But it doesn't seem to work any more. I think I even followed instructions to find out where these key bindings are set in Windows and that option was missing. And indeed I can't find it in the docs:
Does anyone know when / why they got rid of that?
-
@boomzilla You mean
Windows logo key + Shift + Up arrow
Stretch the desktop window to the top and bottom of the screen.Works here (20H2) as long as the window isn't already completely maxmised.
edit: and on my work Windows 10 machine (1909).

Huh...definitely doesn't work here (tested with Chrome, Outlook and Windows Explorer). Was looking for maximize, not stretch, which explains why I didn't find it in the docs. I'm on 18xx.
-
@boomzilla Do other Windows key shortcuts work?
Eg Win + R for Run, or Win + Shift + Left/Right to move a window between displays? There's a group policy that can disable Win key hotkeys but AFAIK it disables them all.
-
@loopback0 others work. I can maximize, restore, minimize, run. The left / right thing doesn't seem to work though.
-
@boomzilla said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

My work computer (this one at least) is somehow still on 1809 and all the maximize, stretch, left/right, move across screen etc shortcuts work for me
-
@boomzilla It's Windows - I assume you've tried the ol' turn it off and on again?
-
@loopback0 not today but this is a long standing thing, so...
-
-
Works on Windows 7
-
: Your keyboard shortcuts are just where you left them.
-
To test this, I've unmaximized ("restored") my Firefox window and used Win+Shift+Up maximize it vertically.
Win+Shift+Down then restored it to its previous size.
Win+Shift+Down again reduced it to half the screen's height.
Win+Shift+Up... did nothing.
Win+Shift+Down... also did nothing. Then I tried with Notepad2-mod starting from an arbitrary size and Win+Shift+Up also maximized it vertically.
But Win+Shift+Down minimized it.Trying again with Firefox and it behaved the same as Notepad2-mod: Win+Shift+Up maximized it vertically, Win+Shift+Down minimized.
Switching a couple of times between applications, I could never make Win+Shift+Down unmaximize Notepad2-mod or make it become half the screen's height; it went straight to minimized (and once there shortcuts would stop working). Firefox would sometimes do one or the other: either minimize immediately or unmaximize -> become half the screen height -> stay there.
Final verdict:
-
@boomzilla said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
I'm on 18xx.
I'm on 1809, works as expected, if you expect that once you've vertically maximized a window, pressing +shift+ should minimize the window instead of restore down.

LOL...realized I hadn't been using the customer laptop much lately so fired it up to see what's what. Must need some updates.
So I go to the check for updates page, which tells me first that I'm "Up to date." And that the last time it checked for updates was September 22nd. LOL. I mean, I understand how this happens but it doesn't make it look any less dumb.
My customer's WSUS server has always been a bit retarded. The "Checking now" spinner went for probably 15 minutes and returned saying there was an error, so meh. I tried.
But, it gave me error code 0x80244010, which a quick search tells me is "Exceeded max server round trips." What a joke.
-
@boomzilla clicked "Try Again" and it...didn't report an error. But now I'm up to date! Checked the update history and it looks like something actually updated back at the end of October. Maybe I turned off the machine before it could update after checking in September.
-
I don't get it. We're all complaining about Windows updates, and you go out of your way to get them?
-
@Zerosquare said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

He's just trying to have it update on his terms, instead of having Windows reboot in the middle of his work day

But...
Okay, no kink-shaming.

Probably fell into the same trap I did. I don't allocate enough RAM to the server VM, so it just dies after swapping.
Pro tip: If you plan to run a WSUS server, give it at least 6 gigs of FREE RAM (not just physical, free as in "after the OS has started and all services are running").

I bet this one has a good story behind it. It's especially weird that the
/f

it's just scanning.

@topspin To be fair, the switch is clearly marked. Use

Microsoft has started producing Windows 10 merch:
-
@Zerosquare Presumably it was fine until it updated while the owner was drinking their coffee?
-
On another note, I actually have a Windows Live Messenger branded messenger bag () from being a beta tester waaaaaay back in the day.
Back when testing Microsoft products was voluntary.
-
@loopback0 Imagine if you set down your coffee and went away for a bit. You come back, expecting to find your coffee right where you left it, and this happens.

Once I export my profile keys (so that unlocking the passwords and shit works on a new profile), I'm going to reinstall Windows on this nice new NVMe drive. Then Chrome can fuck with it as much as it wants (it's getting kinda old anyways).
But, is damn strong...
