Status: Up at 2:30 AM and unable to sleep because I'm hungry for a sandwich that I don't have the ingredients to make and soda just isn't cutting it. I've also been continuously nauseous for the last three days which a stomach full of soda is not helping.
Also writing a status report that I was supposed to send Friday. I'm trying to explain that projects are stalled due to no fault of my own without coming off as blaming everybody else even though everybody else's sloth and incompetence is exactly why they're stalled. I feel like shit is going to roll downhill anyway so I'm not sure why I'm bothering to temper my criticism or send the report at all.

Wow. I was going to sneeze, so I involuntarily took a deep breath, and my hope-it's-not-coronavirus wasn't having it. I've never had my body abort a sneeze before.
Really? Have you never had anyone tell you "bless you" before you sneeze?

Status: I just turned off the computer I'm using as a home router because I started my workday-at-home on another. That's the second time today. And it's just 9AM!

Guess I'd be screwed then. Taking that while taking Xeralto is not a good idea...

@Benjamin-Hall If the no-police movement hits there, I guess instead of "released back into the wild" it would be "BBQ at Buba's place!"

Wow, I sure have gotten a lot of unsolicited medical advice from people with no background in healthcare today.
Everything from "don't take the antibiotics" to "just take a bunch of vitamins" to steam baths to "it's probably strep." Though the albuterol suggestion might actually help.
You guys, I've just been informed that honey, lemon juice, and aspirin is a surefire cure! The pandemic is over!

@error Reminds me of something I had in college. Two days I could barely move and when I did I damned near collapsed from headaches worse than any hangover I've ever had. And then, as suddenly as it appeared, it disappeared. Never did figure out WTF it was.

Status: Elsewhere I mentioned that Poland was set for a major drought this year. About that...
Our office got flooded today. I was taking the day off, but I did drop by in the evening to survey the damage. Server room was mercifully spared, but I've been washed out of my cozy basement cubbyhole. Grrr.

Status: Is amused by kids who complain about having to write 2-page papers. I've written over 1700 words (roughly 4 pages at 11 point font, including a couple tables) about an entirely fictional set of peoples today, in about 2 hours of total writing time. And I'm only about half done with this one culture.
-
@Benjamin-Hall even funnier is when they complain when they complain about having to stay inside school from 8 to 2, Monday to Friday. With only six 10-minute breaks in between! The horror!
-
Let's be honest. Would anyone here be happy to endure mandatory multiple one-hour meetings per day, on a dozen of subjects you may have zero interest or ability in, for weeks, expected to bring work back home, all while being unpaid?
-
@Zerosquare we're not laughing in the "OMG your complaints are so stupid" way. We're laughing in the "HAHAHA oh sweet summer child, if you think this is bad, just wait until you graduate" way.
-
I agree that complaining about a 2-page paper is funny. But generalizing that to "kids shouldn't complain, they have it so easy when compared to adults" is wrong. There are plenty of things in education that, in a context of a job, would be worth handing your resignation over. Except kids don't have that option, but society mostly sees no problem with that.
-

and lo, it was good shit

Like no salary.
And...
...I'm actually drawing blank. No salary is the only thing I can think of that'd make me resign from school. Coincidentally, every time I've ever resigned from a job, it was always about insufficient salary.
Am I being too cynical?

Status: Got to love it when somebody who joined eBay yesterday and has two whole feedback points thinks you should take all new pictures of some item you have cases of because they're "skeptical" for some reason.
Seriously, it never fails. I sit on something long enough that my price is the lowest by a wide margin and the floodgates open for this type of question. What possesses people to give me an opportunity to discover that my prices are below market instead of taking advantage of the situation?
-
@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

In Poland. we call that kind of people Nasalis Larvatus.
They pick the lowest-priced item and hope to get to lower the price even more. And then get mad when it backfires.
Do you receive death threats often? I heard that's a thing in online auctions.
-
@Gąska Possibly. Money's only motivated one move in my career. Coincidentally, it was the worst move ever.
Now, I remember in fourth grade, I had a teacher that liked to make me repeat myself.
Question: On Christmas Day of 1776, George Washington and the Continental Army, short on supplies and freezing to death, risked everything to sail across the Delaware river in the dead of night, for what reason?
Only Accepted Answer: On Christmas Day of 1776, George Washington and the Continental Army, short on supplies and freezing to death, risked everything to sail across the Delaware river in the dead of night to surprise the Hessian mercenaries.
Thank (the late) Mrs B for that little recap every time I complain in the other status thread.

In a month I'll receive a >100% raise when changing jobs for the third time in my life, and since I know the company already, I know it'll be a third great success. Maybe you were just very unlucky. Or started from too high position.

To me, most of education felt less like learning and more like an endless chain of writing exercises without any other purpose. As if they hated that computers are taking over and really wanted just one more generation to suffer the pain of writing down everything with a pen.
Hm, that reminds me of that one class in college where we had to take some electrical measurements and then plot some graphs. On paper. In 2016. In Computer Science major. One time we've even asked the teacher what's the purpose of it, and she said dunno.

@Gąska said in The Official Status Thread:

You don't know the half of it. It was a 50% raise but I was grossly underpaid at the old place and management at the new place shifted after I interviewed such that a micromanaging Indian woman was put in a position to make my life hell for the five months it took me to find a way out of that frying pan and into a pot. Yeah, my career hasn't exactly been a success story. I work part-time and sell toy robots to feel like I accomplish something now and then.
Has me pretty worried about this interview I have coming up. It's a pay cut to suffer under another Indian manager. But at least it's development work. But it's public service so there's no point in doing more than the bare minimum because raises are a factor of time alone so it would take 10 years to get back to the purchasing power I have now sitting at home doing fuck all. It feels morally wrong but doing the right thing would be stupid.
I feel like shit every day because I have a demonstrably superior product that I literally cannot sell for any price because the market wants to chug diarrhea instead.

It's really strange, it's been ages since I've had a machine downright freeze like this. And unfortunately not obviously caused by anything in particular...

@Tsaukpaetra don't tracking numbers usually take 24 hours to show up?
Why should they? If they know enough to send me one, then the place that knows within minutes of changes should know it too.
We're at the end of four business days. Anyone want to tell me that the nightly batch process for moving a few numbers around didn't run for nearly a week (and counting)?
Been a week and both stores show nothing.
I'm beginning to think it really hasn't actually shipped and I've been lied to.
Amazon says it was picked up.
DHL claims otherwise.
Lesson learned: Do not order units produced by "Partaker" NewEgg page Amazon Page if you want anything that can be considered "expedient".
I get it, China company, so I'll wait another week (that's the "slow" speed of China-based shipments) before complaining more, but seriously, this is dumb...

...I'm actually drawing blank. No salary is the only thing I can think of that'd make me resign from school.
- 30+ persons meetings that are mostly monologues, with constant background noise, endless interruptions and repetitions, and sometimes being shouted at. Every hour, every day.
- A dozen of managers, all of them thinking their stuff is Top Priority and Really Important, regardless of your current workload. Often they're either chasing the latest fad and buzzwords, or they're stuck 20 years in the past. Lack of people skills is not uncommon.
- Being expected to be competent in and motivated by absolutely everything, made worse by the fact that a large part of the work is essentially inefficient or even a waste of time.
- Poor working conditions: obsolete and broken furniture and equipment, decrepit or even unsafe buildings.
- Weekends? Vacations? This means free time to work, right?
- Physical and/or psychological abuse from coworkers. Toxic people don't get fired ; at best they get a slap on the hand, at worst the CEO looks the other way or blames the victim for retalating.
School has a lot in common with shitty jobs, really.

Our design template consists of 15 pages of instructions and typically yields 10-15 pages of design. In unrelated facts, I don't write designs very often.
