I find this solves most interpersonal issues.

I wish they'd just standardize this stuff like alkaline batteries so it wouldn't be such a pain in the ass for no reason.
It's not without reason. If the batteries were standard, then you could just buy a generic battery instead of a much more expensive OEM battery. Why would an OEM want to let you do that?
Just like nobody ever buys Duracell or Energizer because Walmart brand is 11 cents cheaper?
The fight against standard parts, even if they're only standardized within each company, is absolutely retarded. In a market where competing brands aren't simply different faces of the same Quintesson monster, what's to stop somebody from buying the new product from somebody else? Lock-in is for desperate clowns that can't/won't make a product that people actually want to buy.

Lock-in is for desperate clowns that have something that people do want and who want to extend that purchase to a lot of other things that people don't really want.

Since template meta-programming is Turing complete, you can just make your own.
Okay, okay, I’ll see myself out.

@dkf The stupid part is that I actually prefer OEM parts in pretty much every situation. I just need them to be, you know, available. Having every battery be the same shape with the connectors in the same place is a great way to do that.
It's just interesting looking at what happened with the two modern devices I had a year ago, a Xoom tablet and Galaxy phone. I didn't really like the replacement options for either of them. I would've kept using the Xoom and buying batteries for it if Android had been updated or supported. I would've bought another Galaxy if it hadn't been turned into disposable junk by poor design decisions (hur dur rounded glass edges) and glued in batteries. I was lucky the Galaxy Tab had the features I wanted in tablet and I almost bought a Moto e6 to get the features I wanted in a phone. But I very easily could've bought a Surface and a Pixel instead.

Yes. It's a cost/quality thing. This is a nicely priced chair. But is the quality too cheap? (I'm not willing to pay 500 to 1000 for a really nice one)

@TimeBandit Something not entirely but mostly completely unlike that

Making a desk chair out of a car seat?
edit: I actually considered the same but the seat I wanted to use was silly expensive, so I ended up just buying a "gaming" chair with a similarish design.

Why not? It spends less trying to butt in between the others and then spinning for locks, I/O, or when the scheduler just tells it to fuck off, and when it actually gets its timeslice, it can do the work it was expected to.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in The Official Status Thread:
trying to butt in
But, is that how the scheduler works?
I don't know. For some reason I didn't expect this result.
Granted the requested tick is rather stupid (I guess it wants a tick every 33ms for a message pump that will receive messages maybe once a second when it's super-busy), so I also increased the delay there too...
-

Eh, probably not. People who actually know shit should be around shortly.

I apparently ate something (possibly the Thai green curry) that induced unfortunate gastrointestinal effects. Does that count?

@HardwareGeek That's one way to put it. Preferably somewhere else, downwind, far away from here.

Making a desk chair out of a car seat?
Yup
It took a bit of looking to find a car with at least one seat in good condition, and a bit of work to get it out, but after all that it was $25 CAD. Next step is to clean it, get rid of the extra crap I don't need and make some kind of adapter to mount it on the desk chair base. It'll probably end up being a piece of plywood

If you want to go fancy I once had blueprints for a wooden rocker base with swivel. Moderate skill with a jigsaw required.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in The Official Status Thread:
spinning for locks
FWIW, spinlocks are very very expensive if you can't get the lock straight away.
Also, schedulers are deeply counterintuitive, but the usual tradeoff AIUI is between responsiveness and throughput. And with that, you've covered most of what I know about them; they're on the list of things with which I try to avoid tinkering with.

status On a company compensation meeting. Why do they have to pick yet another presentation framework. One we have to log in to via the browser and dial in on the telephone. Guys, there are presentations that will put the audio in the browser too!
-
@dcon said in The Official Status Thread:

I used to work with a group of people who did that about a decade ago. This was because their site was, despite being a substantial research centre close to London, on a network connection that had virtually no bandwidth at all, and certainly not enough to sustain a Skype or Webex audio-only meeting. The whole of the rest of the project was like “why don't you guys join the 21st century?” but they were highly resistant to that.
It was a really nice place to visit though, provided you didn't want internet and didn't mind going down tiny little country lanes through thick forest to get there; it was the most ass-end-of-nowhere place that you can find that near to the capital.
