their lack of preparation (seriously, you're still packing boxes when we arrive to load you out? How much do you (not) value our time)
I was in Texas. My son was supposed to be packing from the time I decided we were relocating permanently until I flew back to load up and drive here — about a month, which should have been plenty of time. He was only about 10% packed. Yeah, "strongly irked" would be a good description.
The time before that, when I moved from WA back to CA, I was in CA temporarily, but still maintaining the residence in WA with the possibility but no actual plans to move permanently. I had the house mostly packed, except for enough stuff to live on temporarily when I returned to what I still considered my permanent home (especially considering I was living in an hotel in CA). When I went back to move permanently, I found out my house had been burglarized in my absence (quite recently, the landlady had been by just a couple of days before). The burglar had opened and rummaged through my neatly packed boxes, so I was a lot less packed than I had thought I was, and the friends who were helping me load the truck found themselves packing boxes, too. There were quite a few irked people that day, including me.

Status: Do you ever look at the stock market and think: If I just had $10K laying around to invest, I could day trade instead of working a job.
Damned near every stock in my watch list is double or triple its 52 week low. Companies like Square bounce between $30 and $90 on what looks like a regular cycle. For crying out loud, if you bought $10K of JC Penney when it cratered a month ago at 11 cents, you would double your money selling now.
I almost feel stupid for buying at low points and saving dividends for future low points. It's almost 1950s "work hard to get ahead" naive.
10k? You’d have to beat the market by a huge amount to make a living out of that. If it’s just speculation instead of growth-based, where does your knowledge come from?
If you could do that consistently I’d give you 20k and we’d split the profit. But do you really need inside information? Everybody sees the crash that crushes stock prices when it happens. And if you set a fixed goal, like share price doubling, instead of trying to time the next peak, that's largely independent of inside information too. Sure, it's still speculation but not to the level of betting on failure or a peak.
Anyway...I have done alright with the limited funds I've had put into the market. As of market close today, my record is 130% gain over 11 years. So if everything scaled evenly, $10K would be $23K today.
I would've done better if I sold SQ every time it hit $90-$100 and bought it back at $30-$40. That opportunity's come along at least twice now. Last time I thought "what if they really do become the next Visa?" Oops. And if four other stocks hadn't completely shit the bed. I guess my win:lose ratio is 2:1 or so.
Here's the thing. If you use SQ as an example, you would've roughly tripled your money every three years. If you put $3000 into it, instead of $300, you'd pull out $6000 twice, meaning you'd walk away with $2000 per year. That's two week's pay for somebody making around $70K.
Maybe it speaks to how poorly jobs pay here that I think that's significant. Anything I've seen for development tops out around $60K. If you were working at Target (assuming $13/hour and 35 hour weeks), you'd be looking at $23K annually or $450 per week. At that point, $2000 covers about a month off.
You could stretch it out a little further because you're not paying gas or meals out or parking or various things you trade money for because you don't have the time. Alright, so $10K wouldn't obviate the need for work. Not right away. But if you repeated it a few times while working? Hell, had I not gone deep into debt trying to start a business due to stagnant wages, I could live on half what I make right now...

Status: This patch saves about 300 bytes from a binary (the difference being critical in that it is now able to fit in instruction memory).
- *(current_state->post_to_pre_table_entry) = current_state->post_to_pre; + post_to_pre_entry *ppentry = + __builtin_assume_aligned(current_state->post_to_pre_table_entry, 4); + *ppentry = current_state->post_to_pre;
The saving? It means that the compiler doesn't use a call to
memcpy()
to implement that write, and for reasons best known to someone else,memcpy()
is several hundred bytes long on the target architecture. I have literally no idea why it needs that much space.

And the pitch level of this rant of their's is rising steadily as they get more and more worked up over how they're entitled to free work and anybody who disagrees is a filthy socialist layabout. I think they're still talking but I don't think even my dogs can hear it at this point. Jesus.
Edit: Complaining that fan artists at conventions should buy a license to sell their work? What fucking planet are they on? Have they ever tried to contact somebody at a company for permission to do anything? It's impossible. They communicate exclusively through C&D letters and DMCA takedowns. If Marvel or whoever put a contract for X% of revenue/profit out on their site as a PDF, don't they think those people would sign it? Assholes.

Yeah. A long, long time ago, a HS buddy and I wanted to sell some stuff at a ST convention. We contacted Paramount for a license. At first, they offered us a license for a one-time fee + royalties that would have vastly exceeded any income we could have hoped to generate (even with the greatest of optimism; the stuff we wanted to sell was junk, and nobody but a naive HS kid would have thought it might sell), then said no, we were too small-potatoes to even bother dealing with.
Given that we couldn't get a license (but had gotten on Paramount's radar), I backed out, saying I didn't want to go through with it without a license. My buddy went to the convention anyway. Paramount lawyers knocked on his door and confiscated all his merchandise, and very nearly confiscated his large, personal collection of legitimately purchased licensed collectibles.
-
@HardwareGeek the market-based solution for this is not having fan art, conventions, or being fans to begin with.

Status: I think I goofed buying spare batteries and a screen protector for this tablet.
Option 1A: Buy one spare battery to save money right now.
Option 1B: Buy two to save shipping and not worry about availability later. Option 2A: Buy more expensive tempered glass sold by manufacturer with full product description.
Option 2B: Buy half-priced tempered glass that just says "tempered glass" and ships from "France?" And that's CapEx for the year. Because if September's cancelled, IRS is going to kill me next April.

No? Why would they if they just sat in a box? Isn't it the recharge/discharge cycle that kills them?
I was thinking more that the battery in my Xoom survived over 8 years of light use. As I expect to be out of business before another 8 years elapses, an extra spare for the new tablet was probably dumb. My dad's neighbor complaining about not being able to get parts for relatively new equipment because they hardly make any ramped up my fear of forced obsolescence I guess.

AFAIK sitting idly kills them even faster, especially when you never charge them. And once you start charging, you get the cycles... But it depends on the technology and materials used, YMMV, IANAL, SMFW etc.

Unused lithium-ion batteries fare best when they're charged at roughly half capacity. Storing them fully charged causes faster degradation, and fully discharged is even worse.
But AFAIK, you can't completely prevent aging effects, so it's better to buy new than to use old stock.
-
@Zerosquare on the other hand, my sister got a showcase phone that, according to battery settings screen, spent 183 days on a store shelf, always on and always charging (at 50-55%) - and the battery lasted over two days of constant use! Can't say anything about longevity, though, because she crushed it before a year passed.

I actually woke up at about 1:15 AM, then tried to get back to sleep for an hour or so until just after 2. @Zerosquare I had heard it was better to store them half-charged and it made sense that every battery I've ever bought arrived half-charged. Comparing my Motorola Xoom (used a dozen times a year, going on 8 years) to my Samsung Galaxy (used every day, burns a battery every 8-11 months) suggested that cycling was the culprit. I wish they'd just standardize this stuff like alkaline batteries so it wouldn't be such a pain in the ass for no reason.

It's not without reason. If the batteries were standard, then you could just buy a generic battery instead of a much more expensive OEM battery. Why would an OEM want to let you do that?
-

We're expecting 37 today and 38 tomorrow (that's 98 and 100° F for the barbarians). Fortunately, although the humidity is very high in the (relative) cool of the morning, it drops as the temperature rises, until it's only 30-something% in the heat of the day. That's unpleasant but bearable, at least if you don't have to be outside for a long time.

Here in Poland wea bit more eastbackwards it's rather unusual to have any serious weather like that. Then, of course, these are interesting times...It was fairly mild (apart from the ice barrage) in my little village. Other places, esp. the big town, got fugged up. Some HV cable of some substation assploded or something, lots of places still without electric power, grid-powered public transport not running, stuff like that.
And climate models are predicting more today.
