USC has been doing that to me. Sure, I graduated from there. Never gave them my email. They found it (probably LinkedIn). Every email I get, unsubscribe. Doesn't work very well - unless they have 500 different email lists. Or (evil laugh) every email sent is a new list, so technically they're ok!

Microsoft/Windows Defender has been more lightweight than other antivirus programs for me, but I have seen the occasional report like @Tsaukpaetra's where something goes wrong. 🤷🏻♂

Let me do the math for you: 10kAh at 3.7v is equivalent to 31.84 kilograms of TNT.

I'd leave it on a table very carefully then call the bomb disposal unit.

  • Local supermarket keeps pestering me to make a loyalty card. So I checked to see what advantages it gets you. As far as I can tell, the main benefits are:

    1. You get points when you purchase stuff, then you get discounts with those points. Doing the math, the final discount amounts to 1€ for every 400€ spent. MONEY!
    2. If you've spent more than 200€ a month for the last 6 months, you become a gold member. Gold members get a birthday gift. No mention of what that birthday gift is, but extrapolating from the other discount I assume it's a 3€ coupon.

Around here, the loyalty cards are pretty much mandatory. For many items, there are substantial discounts if you use your store card. Since the majority of shoppers have these cards, it's more like a substantial fee for the privilege of not carrying their card around with you than a reward for having a card.

Since not all items have these penalties, I've never figured out the total percentage, but it is commonly at least several dollars extra I would have to pay for a shopping cart full of groceries for not having a card.

I refuse to get any of these cards whatsoever (singular exception is that local guy who sells me Döner, it's just stamps on a paper card and you get a free one at 10 stamps, no sign up).

There was a time (apparently starting in the 50s) where discount stores popped up that gave you the discount up-front (i.e. everything is cheaper, no non-loyalty-card-penalty), which was a massive success because you got the cheap prices without the loyalty cards, coupons, and all that other hassle. Then at some point these new and improved loyalty cards came up with complete tracking of everything and for some stupid reason they caught on. In the end everybody pays as much as before, except for the people like my who don't take part in this discount garbage.

YMMV, but I've had pretty good experience with one of my local drugstores' loyalty program and buying items from their electronics section with the points paying for the majority of the price

  • Status: I am a nerd. My shipping container arrived today. I had previously measured all of my furniture, rounding to the 1/2" (1 cm, roughly) range. I verified the stated internal measurements of the container.

I then proceeded to make an optimal packing spreadsheet, using excel at a 1 grid-square : 4"x4" scale, rounding the number of available squares down and the number of required squares down. Height was handled by checks on stacking, not directly. This way, I have a confirmed fit, with a fair amount of space left over. And can print out that plot for packing purposes tomorrow.

In doing so, I validated my gut decision to sell off one particular piece of furniture that would have been slightly too large to fit.

It's playing Tetris, with furniture. Actually a bit of fun. Now if I also had to make sure I was balancing weights, that'd take more work. It's roughly balanced, because all the stuff is about the same density. No appliances or large safes.

  • @dcon Mine is on 9 currently. It's in the Android One program, which I had thought (incorrectly, as I found out) would get OS updates at the same time as Pixel/AOSP, but after reading more carefully it's actually only security updates that work that way. But this morning I got a notification that there was a new update ready, and that it's Android 10. I'll apply it later and see what's up

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

    @Zenith
Also, fun story from my 7th grade days. We had a simulated stock market competition in one of my classes, in teams of 3 or 4. There was a token amount of real world prizing available to incentivize us further, not that my inner over-competitor really needed any additional excuse to go super hard on it.

I put hours and hours of research into it. Yahoo! Finance, going to the library for the Wall Street Journal, you name it, I did it. After much painstaking analysis, I had discovered a blue chip, American company, well known and stable, that had traded in a very tight cyclical range for multiple years, you could set your watch to it. Would go up to $28/share, then go down to $22/share, then go back up, without much volatility outside of that range. It was then trading for $28/share.

I sold my team super hard on shorting this stock. Guaranteed money. We'd be easy winners. And I was doubly proud because shorting was a bit of a loophole in the rules on the competition - while there were limits on how much of your portfolio you could take in any one stock for a long position, and the margin restrictions were pretty tight for long positions, there weren't the same restrictions for short positions, just fairly standard mark-to-market rules & the margin calls you'd get for an underwater short position. We went all in on my brilliant research.

Except my research turned out to be rather brillant, as I had missed the most important piece of information about my target company. Three days after the competition started, Wal-Mart joined the Dow Jones Industrial Index. The share price broke $50 before the contest ended (we closed our position with a big loss before that point, but couldn't recover from losing so much capital on the "sure thing").

When I moved, a couple of my ex-BILs (I'm still on good terms with everyone in my ex-wife's family, except her) helped me load the truck. They actually called it furniture Tetris. They did get it significantly more densely packed than I did, although at the sacrifice of comesome care for fragile items — in particular, an 80+ year old table with bad legs that I wanted to minimize the weight it had to support — but as far as I have found so far, nothing important was damaged that wasn't already damaged.

Now if I also had to make sure I was balancing weights, that'd take more work.

It was slightly unbalanced, but not enough to make it unsafe to drive. It was leaning visibly to the left, but only about 1° or 2°.

10k? You’d have to beat the market by a huge amount to make a living out of that. If it’s just speculation instead of growth-based, where does your knowledge come from?
If you could do that consistently I’d give you 20k and we’d split the profit.

I've helped lots of people pack trucks. As it turns out, my favorite place is in the truck, directing the younger (and more in shape) guys where to put stuff. Been told I've got an eye for it. This one I had to make sure I had room (so I could decide what to keep). Good thing is that most of it would be very hard to destroy and is basically rectangular with heavy sides. Plus boxes all the same size, stackable totes, etc.

After helping so many people and being strongly irked by their lack of preparation (seriously, you're still packing boxes when we arrive to load you out? How much do you (not) value our time) and possession of excess crap (no, taking your entire kitchen of food across the country is rather pointless, as is taking that stuff that's already broken to heck and back and been sitting in your garage/shed. Throw it away already!), I vowed to never make anyone suffer through that for one of my moves. So I've been dumping/selling/giving away stuff for a while now and planning in advance.

Unrelated Status: I really should play games from my catalog (both on Steam and on GOG) before purchasing new ones. But a remastered Bard's Tale Trilogy for like $8? Right before I'll be restricted to only a laptop and no reliable internet for a week? Yup.
