We're use almost exclusively HP. We generally don't have problems with their drivers.
Mainly I'm COMPLAINing about their printer drivers, and the EZ-Install thing they come packed up in*. I've had failed installs of that stuff destroy the Windows print spooler service to the point where reinstalling Windows was my least time-wasting option. Some HP printer models also install a dedicated web server that's only accessible from localhost, just for the benefit of the system tray monitoring applet. Madness.
*IME, stuff branded "EZ" is generally as easy as stuff branded "smart" is smart.

I guess that explains why the sound in my laptop stops working if you reboot from Linux to Windows. You have to shut down the computer, wait a few seconds and start it up again to fix it.
-
Extra bullshit points if the web server runs on port 631, for maximum level of fuckup!

Fuck you, I'm crying now... wait, is that my lung?

I can't describe how much I hate Karl right now

@ZeusTKP Nice necro, I guess.... ;)
Edit: Also, welcome to the forum!

Karl, the intern code basement monkey working for peanuts wanted to keep his job by finishing the Application in a day from demands of the Boss who has a degree in carsales man techniques. So he copied some code out of a flash chip from an old motherboard in the 90’s with windows 3.1 installed, but since it was all in binary format he couldn’t edit it so he had to apply a reoccurring launcher to keep refreshing the code.

This almost makes sense on the surface, but as soon as you start thinking about it things start falling apart.

Netscape 7.02 Leads to AOL.com (eventually). No Netscape in site.@kt_ upvoted this and so I gave it a whirl again.
I'll say one thing: Site is blazing fast to load and runs very well. Has some flash bits and not responsive at all. Apparently Compuserve forums are alive, read up on people trying to install Windows 10, dude apparently learned the word "extracting". Also, I guess some people like to relax in the woods naked.
It's kinda eerie.

When I read "Karl", I thought of "Karl Klammer". In English, that guy used to be called "Clippit".
We have so many symbols here, but no "clippit"? Well, one of them comes close at least:

It is 2020, chiming in to say I also got shafted by this and took weeks to figure out what was wrong. My incarnation of this crappy service came from the latest TP-LINK drivers that came with my Wireless AC USB adapter. So nope, this thing is still in the wild.

@blakeyrat said in Finally nailed my Windows memory leak (A.K.A. The official we hate Karl club):
Is that how it works? If you're inside Win directory, you get special privileges?
Not really. You do by default inherit the C:\Windows folder permissions, though.
Karl probably worked on Windows NT 3.5 drivers in the past and had no idea that was FUCKING 20 YEARS AGO GODDAMNED WHY ARE SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS SO FUCKING TERRIBLE AT THEIR JOBS!

RunSW.exe; is for a cheap foreign wireless lan/wifi adapter used to for windows without wireless capabilities. Was for older pc's ., before windows vista. It doesn't work and tries to stay in the driver's list to load. Took a couple tries to finally get rid of it even though remnants of the program creep up all over in files. Is most likely a spyware utility just as folks posted it as. Karl. Funniest stuff I read all week! COVID-19 era now! Be safe (if anyone reads this :)

Did you actually stick a driver CD into your machine in 2020?
Or did Windows auto-shaft it for you?Because I'm wondering whether Windows 10 will insistently auto-shaft after once being exposed to the device. You could bork public PCs by plugging in a completely unmodified commercial USB device for a few seconds...

I didn't bother to install Java on this machine after I did some upgrades and a reinstall last year.

Someone has weird masturbation habits:
literal meaning of the verb shaft, which is to push something or someone with a pole
to get screwed

The licensing terms on OpenJDK are acceptable to WTF-U. For what we use Java for, that's very acceptable.

My current gig is using Java 8. And an old build at that. Except for a few projects still on Java 6.

@Carnage version locked to Java 6, here. At least those computers have no internet connection.

@Tsaukpaetra They're set to not check for updates automatically. I wouldn't know what they'd do otherwise.

We're using 8. Last year we switched from Oracle to OpenJDK though.

Yeah, a colleague has the joy of working with one of those old crust piles. I haven't been inflicted with have 1.4.2 in 10 years now I think. But considering there still being ancient cobol systems in operation, that's not particularly surprising.

We're stuck on oraclejdk, with oracle weblogic and oracle database. Surprisingly enough, not oracle Linux. That is redhat instead.
