I think what you really want is Cherry MX Gray, which they sadly only use for spacebars. Sorry.

I have to ask Unicomp what type of switches they use.
I'm glad you asked! They don't use crosspoint switches at all. They use buckling spring -- there's a spring at an angle between the keycap and a beveled plate underneath, and when the key goes down far enough the spring buckles and slaps the other side of the plate against the PCB contacts. Unfortunately, they're pretty much the only manufacturer that does this.

So what's closest to a buckling spring?

So what's closest to a buckling spring?
Not much, honestly. Cherry MX Greens are (IIRC) the closest, but keyboards using them aren't that common nowadays. Cherry MX Blues have clicks, tactile feel, and are more widely available, but they're not quite the same. The various Cherry switches need less of a push to trigger and the switch doesn't necessarily fire at the same time you feel and/or hear the key click. The differences are probably minor once you use it for a bit, but it's hard to tell from playing around in a store.
I've been using a Model M keyboard for many years, but I look at getting a modern mechanical keyboard every once in a while. It'd be nice to have n-key rollover, though I'm sure the first thing I'd do is turn off the RGB lighting that is way too popular with keyboard manufacturers.
I've never used a Model F (the other type of IBM buckling spring keyboard, with capacitive switches) or any modern recreations, but supposedly they're even better than the buckling spring on membrane that is the Model M. They also have n-key rollover if properly converted to PS/2 or USB.

That's about what I felt when I looked at the available options for configuring a 1HE rack server.

Status: Trying to be useful and plan my (almost certainly online) classes. Roadblock: Not sure what idiocy the administration's going to try to force down our throats as far as protocols and requirements.
Likely idiocy: required synchronous classes via Zoom. Including taking attendance.
Likely work-around: I'll require them to check in so I can take attendance, but otherwise not mandate that their devices have the tab open the whole time. Because iPads don't do that well...at least and do other things at the same time. Which is what they'd have to do to take notes, do practice problems, etc. I'll likely just do pre-recorded video lectures (short-form) for them to watch outside of "class time" and then be there to work through problems, etc during "class time". What are they going to do, fire me?The hard one's going to be web design, since that takes lots of individual attention and being able to see their screens and work through challenges at an individual level.
[1] whenever that comes...things are in total flux ATM. As is the hiring process for next year. Not liking the idea of multiple months of lock-down/"social distancing". That would make moving in June rather difficult.

The "hard to tell in store" issue is what I found when I was looking at different mechanical keyboards. I tried typing on a few different ones and afterwards just YOLO'd buying my current keyboard, with more thought given to other factors rather than what particular switches it used.

Got off my and changed the programming. Now I don't have to go "oh, it's getting chilly again - thermostat override time". I just have to remember to re-program when I go back to the office!

That does sound hard.
This morning I had a one-to-one conference with a student1, originally intended to discuss the status of his work but now turned to mostly helping him set up things he needs to work remotely. Wouldn't want to do that with a whole class.
Besides instructions on how to remote in via NX/RDP etc., I also asked him to set things up locally on his on machine, in case our infrastructure crumbles. But, as usual, that involves not just checking out the code but also setting up all the dependencies to build, which is a royal pain. At work I can just say "run this script and it will check out and configure everything", but that doesn't work when the dependencies aren't installed yet. I mean, I guess I could set up a complete working environment with docker or whatever people use nowadays, but that seems overkill and I have neither the time nor interest to learn how to do that.1 Side note: Third day of home office, first time meetings failed completely. Couldn't sign in to either Team Viewer or WebEx, for which we have licenses, because they were over the limit. Tried out the free version of zoom I got an invite to yesterday, and that worked in a pretty simple way.

Definitely sounds like a marketing scheme that has a higher chance of working on me than stupid shit they usually come up with, like $999.99 prices or dumb advertisement.

And now some practical advice: pick a reasonable number of options, somewhere between 5 and 20, and just don't look at anything else. Just make sure you picked a "random sample" (i.e. included various stores/types/brands/pricing ranges).
When I wanted to buy a PC I limited myself to AMD because they seemed to have fewer products (and Ryzen was new and everyone was talking about how good it was), a clearer naming scheme and just one CPU socket.

@mott555 said in The Official Status Thread:

Provided the data schema isn't recursive, sure. If it is recursive, consider JSON instead of XML as SQL databases are terrible at recursive data structures. (Yes, there are schema tools for JSON.) One of the things that SQLite is pushed by its author as is a replacement for simple files; I've had good experience with replacing a whole large directory of XML files with a single SQLite database file (and, after a bit of tweaking, it ended up being much faster and more compact to write too).
And for fuck's sake, don't use YAML. Just don't. YAML is to data serialization what Markdown () is to markup languages.
-
@dkf No recursion at all. The lowest-level data structure would remain XML/XAML (comes from a WPF FlowDocument, I think) that gets stuffed into a string field. Everything else is just hierarchy to assist with organization and ordering.
