we don't even have proof that vaping is safer

With appropriate regulation (e.g., of composition and concentrations and so on of the liquids), it appears to be definitively safer than smoking. I make no claim that it is either actually safe — the list of things safer than smoking is a very long one! — or that anywhere in the US is necessarily applying appropriate regulation. I do note however that vaping users in the UK have significantly less lung and throat irritation than smokers, and they're a hell of a lot more pleasant to be near as a non-user of any nicotine-based product.

They may or may not be less harmful (and that’s a pretty low bar, anyway), but they’re still annoying as fuck to be near. And I can smell that shit literally across the street if the wind is right. I can do that with a cigar or weed, but not an ordinary cigarette. Also annoying is those “trendy” hookah bars that popped up everywhere like Starbucks. They’re at every fucking corner now and they smell 50m down the block.

20 years ago I might have welcomed this vaping crap over smoking, but the trend has largely been for people to stop smoking, and much fewer teens starting. Now this comes along as a “safer alternative” or a way to “ease off” and seems to reverse the general trend. Because of course Big Tabacco can’t have that.

If you just want one exact colour to be transparent, without any anti-aliasing (= not that exact colour) then it's trivial and just about any image software should let you specify a transparent colour when you save PNG or GIF. If it's already a GIF you can use ezgif.com to set the transparent colour.

For something more complicated, like including anti-aliasing, there are softwares and plugins. Alphalizer plugin for Paint.net kinda-sorta does that. I'm sure there's some chromakey plugin purpose built for that.

e: re-read your entire post more carefully. Paint.net with Alphalizer is perfect for a two-colour (anti-aliased) image such as black and white line-art

Oh, I found many a program that could cut out pieces and leave the rest transparent, but not what I said above.

This is what I was looking for. The following software does not do this:

    • paint
    • paint 3d
    • Pictures
    • online image editor
    • (insert seven other online image editors found using the search terms "edit image online")

    Paint.net with Alphalizer

Oh, right, that Photoshop wannabe that I couldn't figure out how to get it to let me draw on a picture.

    I wanted something simple FFS!

    My desired steps:

    1. Open image
    2. Select the tool "make this color transparent"
    3. Click on color
    4. Save the picture

From what I can recall being paint.net this would be:

    1. Wait for paint.net to open
    2. Open image
    3. Look for anything in all the tools hinting at "transparent"
    4. Fail.
    5. Find tutorial online about the lasso
    6. Get lost in the weeds with Layers
    7. Give up because I already spent an hour fucking around with an image I tried to do a simple manipulation on and couldn't because apparently simple things just can't be fucking simple!

I think i posted before how I wanted to extract the red green and blue portions of an image to make a mask, yeah? Same fucking thing...

What annoys me is that generally smokers make at least some effort to not blow the smoke in a non-smokers face but the douche canoes that are exhaling thick clouds of fruity steam do no such thing.

I used to smoke and tried vaping for a few months but didn't get on with it. Everything about it is a palaver and not only do you get associated with aforementioned douche canoes but there's a real risk of bumping into another vaper who wants to discuss vaping and how they've got some expensive 14 mega-amp-hour battery with a tank the size of a house brick and buy artisanal liquid that smells like raspberry sorbet combined with that coffee that's made from beans shat out of cats.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OJnkJqkyio

  • Just fired up Pillars of Eternity II again (never finished it when it first came out, stuff came up, forgot about it, etc etc.).

It has this funny bug where it causes the mouse to get trapped in a different unrelated window (like, for instance the firefox window that I'm posting this from) when starting the game.

Not quite sure what triggers it, but I'm guessing it's related to having a window focused on a monitor different from the one that the game is trying to launch in. The game stays minimized too.

I'm wondering what kind of horrors are going on under the hood to make that happen.

  • Visual Studio has several dozen kinds of "panels" to manage various stuff. At least five of them are various kinds of command lines. But somehow none of them are an actual cmd/PowerShell command line.

  • @Tsaukpaetra Irfanview will do what you need. The steps are a little different:

    1. Open image
    2. File -> Save As
    3. Select PNG and check "save transparent color" and make sure "use main window color" is unchecked. I think the alpha channel one will work either way
    4. It'll pop up a window where you can click on the area with the colour you want transparent.

    @Tsaukpaetra

How hard would it be to take this working code and add to it so you can "upload" an image to the open page and pick a color via mousedown events?

In my browser at least, right-clicking the canvas and saving as image will save a PNG with transparency.

I might give it a shot tomorrow if no one gets there first.

The "Package Manager Console" is the closest thing to a PowerShell command line that I know of (it exists in VS Enterprise, no idea if it also exists in the Community Edition).
Also, I can't say if you can somehow get Ctrl + C working as "stop whatever you're doing" without losing the "Copy" shortcut for the rest of VS so instead you might need to click the "Stop" button.

Scratch that... a real WTF is that a live linux distro which is something you can use to try Linux, and something you are even encouraged to use to install Linux on your PC, doesn't support MD/RAID and LVM2 out of the box.

If you're just trying it out from CD, you don't need those. If you're installing it, it's sufficient if the installer supports and installs them.

Why not is really beyond me, those should be essential packages because they require kernel modules loaded to work.

The logic of this statement is also beyond me. If they didn't require kernel modules loaded to work they wouldn't be essential packages?

The installer can install packages which aren't part of the live CD, but to partition the disk it's going to need to have access to the tools in running form. And just including them in the live CD in the first place seems like the easiest way to accommodate that.

There's circumstantial evidence to suggest that it relates to mixing vaping and marijuana. Apparently, that's not safe to consume that way and this is well known to long-term potheads. (Another possible problem is super-strength liquids; the US doesn't regulate composition much whereas other places are much stricter.)
