@Gąska Regular memory allocation is usually handled by the runtime library which in turn uses OS-provided HeapAlloc / HeapFree calls. You can bypass runtime library and even HeapAlloc by using VirtualAlloc (and if you feel especially evil and have proper privileges you can even allocate physical memory pages) and implement your own allocator / deallocator. That smells like NIH syndrome to me thouugh.
the runtime library is running inside webassembly
the heap allocation is done via javascript
you can reallocate the heap if you need more space
it works more or less identically to how it normally does, just with a few extra layers of abstraction

I am also suspecting there might be something like this in there:
if (PlayerIsDoingTooWell()) { SpawnTankLiterallyOnTheirHead(); }
This seems to be correct (see the section about "Dramatic Game Pacing"):
•Estimate the “emotional intensity” of each Survivor
•Track the max intensity of all 4 Survivors
•If intensity is too high, remove major threats for awhile
•Otherwise, create an interesting population of threats

TIL about this horrible, horrible cartoon that aired in Cartoon Network.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB7XLb9vSmULike, my god, I know they need to be open to new concepts and experiments, but
were they thinking? This makes Uncle Grandpa look like an art piece.
"Oh but maybe it's one of those intentionally looks-bad-but-is-good things! Maybe the superficial stupidity and ugliness is just another component of their clever humor!" But it isn't. As far as I can tell this is meant to be straightforward comedy for kids.
-
@anonymous234 At least we know why it never got an extended run.

Update: WolframAlpha still can't put it together, despite knowing the information and supposedly interpreting the input

If you have an iPhone and a Mac signed into the same Apple ID near each other (with Bluetooth and WiFi enabled) and you try to connect to a WiFi network which requires a password the iPhone knows but the Mac doesn't, the iPhone helpfully offers to share the password with the Mac. It's sometimes useful, I like the feature when it works normally.
The other day there was a powercut at home which caused my router to have a sulk and stop accepting WiFI connections. While struggling to connect, my iPhone helpfully offered the option. A reboot of the router fixed it, and my laptop connected (and continues to connect) perfectly fine.
Except now every time I pick my phone up to unlock it while I'm at home it pops up the same prompt. Even though the laptop is connected to the network already.

Suddenly, while scrolling through a topic,
It happened three times so far. Opera is taking up 1.5 GB of ram in total, which may be a ridiculous amount but not that much compared to all my RAM. Opera's built-in task manager shows my TDWTF tab pretty low, around 50 MB.
-
@levicki I thought the limit for 32 bits was 4 GB. But as for why Opera is 32 bit, that's a great question. I don't remember it being 32 bit before, and I'm pretty sure I've used it with higher memory usage before.

No free shows. you either pay admission or wait for someone who will give free shows.
-
@levicki I thought the limit for 32 bits was 4 GB.
It's 4 GB of address space, but by default only half of it is available to processes (that's a simplification, but you get the idea).
-
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
Also, I am not saying your Opera is 32-bit (there is no way I can know that) -- I am just wondering if it maybe is? Although that would be ridiculous in this day and age.
I know you had no way of knowing if it was 32 bit, but I checked and indeed it was. I'm now manually downloading the 64 bit opera setup

"Well, I'd already done a PhD in X-Files Theory at UCLA, and Amita was just starting her Masters in Diana Studies with the University of Leeds, via the net. U Toronto was in the process of opening its own Department of Transgressive Discourse—at last!—so it was only natural that we both applied for positions."

Ah, that old tech. I remember that. Need to switch to polychromatic crystalline holography. Not only does it look pretty, but it puts BluRay in the blackhole age...

"Adventure Time" seems to be a success, for whatever reason. Comedy can't keep up with reality so I've just been waiting for Terence&Philip to get their own show.

The person who originally wrote it had been dead for at least 15 years, and in any case hadn't been employed by the firm for decades.
Just a few years back I heard pieces of my code I wrote as a student in 1996 are still in production somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if I heard it started summoning Zalgo in 2038.

Get Aard 1 and go for knockdown insta-kill.
It's been my go-to for killing mobs; I was surprised it worked on a boss. Seems broken.

@Benjamin-Hall said in WTF Bites:
@Gąska I think it was the first boss (the barghest one?) that made me stop playing. I eventually beat it, but lost interest at that point. If I'm thinking of the right game.
The Netflix series got me interested. I intend to read the books as well.

@levicki said in WTF Bites:
Limit for 32-bit processes is 2 GB because of user / kernel memory split (you need RAM to map kernel into your process so your code can call its functions). It can be 3 GB / 1 GB split if linked with /LARGEADDRESSAWARE option but some other conditions must be met as well.
Actually, the kernel is always just 1 GB. The
/LARGEADDRESSAWARE
is a backward compatibility shim. Apparently some programs were doing binary search using(begin + end) / 2
(begin
andend
being pointers), but that overflows if the pointers are past half of the address space. So the system defaults to not allocating above the 2GB boundary unless the flag is set.Now
(begin + end) / 2
is not valid C or C++, because addition of pointers is not defined. So either some programmers did it with casts, but it is also possible that some compilers optimized the correct expressionbegin + (end - begin) / 2
that way either by mistake or simply not believing the programs will ever run on computers with 4GB of memory when the typical amount of the time was 4MB.Unfortunately the
/LARGEADDRESSAWARE
was not made default for new projects (which would make sense at the time computers did approach gigabytes of memory) and most programmers don't know about it.
