Status: On a whim decided to go out and buy a Switch, but they didn't have Breath of the Wild lying around, so I lost interest again. Also, my iPhone's home button is acting up a bit, so out of curiosity and since it's a bit over 4 years old now, I checked out the newer models while I was at the store. We've probably covered this over else-thread
:arrows:
when it came out, but still:
Holy crap, the 11 is freaking huge. It's not just wider, taller and thicker, it also feels like it weighs twice as much as my 6S. (Googled it, it's only 35% heavier, but still) And the 11 Pro is smaller than the 11, so they realized that surfboard size is retarded? Good for them. Costs only 450€ more, too.I'm not buying anything anymore until things break completely.
-
@topspin I replaced my 6S (at 3.5 years old) with an XR which is the same size as the 11.
It's not actually that much bigger and I got used to it pretty quickly.
it does make my work SE seem tiny though.IMO it's a worthwhile upgrade from a 6S, the 11 more so as the battery and camera are even better.

The XS was smaller than the XR too, even though the XR was the cheaper one. Never quite made sense to me then either.

Aside from the recent problems with the home button, I haven't felt much urge to upgrade yet. My previous upgrade from the 4S was also after 4 years, but that seemed more necessary because it kept running out of RAM and the battery was pretty fucked, too.
My 6S is still working pretty well. I'm running a bit low on storage, but a sane approach would be to clean up a bit instead of just dumping the same crap on a larger storage phone

Mine had a dodgy charging port and the battery was down to 80% capacity.
It was the first iPhone since the 6S that I actually considered buying (the X being too expensive, the 7 & 8 being basically the 6S with minor tweaks). My carrier having a deal which knocked another £200 off the price tipped the balance from being tempted to going out and upgrading.

it didn't handle the OS upgrades to then-newest very well, and Apple's retarded no-downgrade policy being what it is I was stuck with that
Speaking of, is iOS 13 worth the upgrade, @loopback0? I'm still on 12.4.1 and a bit wary, as per above.

It brought a whole load of features I'll never use but it's certainly not worse than 12.
My only two annoyances were the moving of the reply button in the email client and that the initial update broke the integration with my Audi but only in a way that stopped skip track from working and it's since been fixed. Otherwise it's all grand. As well as my XR I've got an SE (which is basically a 6S internally) and first gen iPad Pro provided by work and I've not noticed slow down or negative effects (outside of the email client) on any. Dark mode was IMO a worthy improvement and on my XR FaceID got better.

@loopback0 I'll try it (and blame you (no, just kidding)), thanks for the info.

Out of town visiting family. At a casino. Noisiest place on earth short of Hard Rock Cafe or a monster truck rally. Recruiter that couldn't figure out how to download my resume but somehow did even though they couldn't and ghosted me calls. I say whatever I think will get them to hang up so I can go back to winning money. They want me to come in, again, Tuesday. First it was Monday, because "I'm flying home Monday" didn't register with them. They're going to send me job descriptions and appointment confirmation. I have no intention of actually going but it's still stupid that close of business came and went with no e-mail. These idiots have as much chance of finding IT talent as I do of striking oil under my garage.

Well, so much for that idea. Bismuth subsalicylate along with the cold medicine. Yay.
The TMI thread is ... elsewhere.
(edit: Hopefully yours doesn't last too long. My cough/nose is at about 4 weeks. The doc just started me on some drugs. At least no chills/fever...)
Thanks. So far, there has been no recurrence.

Nah. I just used some pliers and scissors and broke pieces off of the fan so it would fit. It's cheap anyways.
Also, after installing the power supply I realized the case designers intended you to use a completely different one, because installing it in the correct orientation causes the wires to interfere with the main drive bay mounting bracket, while putting it upside down does not and also partially blocks airflow to the PSU.
GG.

Considering I've seen them for the first time this seems... unlikely.
What I do clearly use often is what fits pretty well:

Anyways, let's try the cross-ship option again. It will work better this time around, right?
Status: Resilvering the new drive (obtained via RMA cross-ship). The system actually did it right this time!
This is going to take a while....
Edit: Perhaps it was a bad idea to keep the drive that dies from IO errors in the system while doing this....
Seems to have stabilized at 60 MB/s, which sucks but at least it's not hung up waiting for the drive to resurrect itself...

Status: Fulfilled my quota of "Shouting insults at moronic traffic participants".
Nominees are:
- The guy who crossed the street, only looking to his left but forgetting that traffic from the right is also a thing
- The woman who thought that an SUV somehow makes driving like an asshole a-okay. Seriously, your right lane was full with parking cars. That means you do not have right of way
- Overtaking a bicycle on a lane that's only 3.00m wide is not okay. Particularly if it's also a 30 zone and the bicycle in question is actually doing 30.
-
@topspin Nintendo is doing a New Year deal for I think a couple more weeks, so you might be able to pick up some cheap digital games. I don't recall if BOTW is included but there are some other good ones.

Years ago I had a laptop and wanted to swap out the optical drive. However the faceplate of the drive didn't fit in the laptop, and the original faceplate couldn't be mounted on the new drive. So I ended up filing down the corners of the drive faceplate to make it fit. The whole thing looked ghetto AF but instead of a 24x CD drive or whatever stupid crap it came with, I had a DVD-RW drive.

I think we've had that discussion.
In a bike in that situation you need to claim your place on the road by going in the middle of the lane
Bikes should know their place on the road - in the ditch.

Status: Bought two different VGA-to-HDMI adapters because, despite being $10 and $11 (respectively) one of them is bound to not work as advertised.
The items are, respectively:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DBZMXML/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NWTRMZD/
Now, testing them, it seems the more expensive one works worse.
Disappoint, but now I can return the other for false advertising (it also claims to be HDCP compatible, which is literally impossible with VGA).
All-in-all, my portable diagnostics triage kit (comprising NexDock2 and USB CD-ROM emulator with lots of random rescue OS ISOs) is coming together quite nicely...

IMO we should totally just make up new ones. The die only appears to have a finite number of sides after all...

Yes. Actually, my idea was to have multiple virtual dice.
Each die would have different texture/bump maps, different messages, different sides, different font... Or maybe it procedurally generates a die.
I mean, it already has to procgen the text textures.I also want to have a random pool of "scenes" that have different backdrops, lighting, and camera positions.
