I got the new Pixel 4 yesterday. I have no back button now, and years of muscle memory from the forums swiping in from the sides to open notifications and chat now has me constantly going back instead.

  • @Polygeekery They've really been doing a number on UI stuff in the past few Android revisions. First they went from the familiar three button layout to a two-and-a-half-with-swiping layout that doesn't take up any less screen space but is more confusing, to what is apparently a gesture-based system but a completely ass-backwards one that screws up a decade worth of software that used side swiping for something other than the back button.

e: and they're also forcing icons to have stupid shapes around them, but thankfully third-party launchers can still ignore this idiocy.

I got an invite for a video meeting with LyncSkype with inverted colorsSkype for Business. When I visited the link on a windows box I got presented with two options:

    • Install and join with Skype Meetings App (web)
    • Join with Skype for Business (desktop)

My first impression from this was that the second option is a platform specific client which you can install and the first one is a simple web page based version. But wait, why does the first say install? The link is actually to an .msi file, so I'm not sure what part of that is "web".

I don't have admin permissions on this Windows box and anyways it's not what I want to use, so let's try it from my Linux workstation. Open the same link and instead of the two options I now get a message saying that everything is ready and a new window of the "Skype Meetings App" has opened. Well, it hasn't.
There is no link to the (presumably) platform-specific desktop client, and clicking the troubleshoot link for re-installing the "Skype Meetings App (web)" again gives me the .msi download. On Linux. :headdesk:

Let's try directly going to the home page of lync.com for the desktop client: get redirected to a page on products.office.com about "Upgrade from Skype for Business Online to Microsoft Teams in Office 365".

I don't want to go full @Levicki, but if fucking porn sites can get a pure HTML/JS video chat site going, why can't Microsoft?

That a web version wouldn't really help me because I assume it can't do screen sharing is merely tangential.

Yeah. The big thing I'm not happy about with my (aging) Pixel 2. And the adapter never worked well for me at all, so I had to get wireless headphones for the rare occasions I need them. I activated our phones last night and this morning both of them had their SIMs locked. Two hours on the phone with Sprint to get that rectified, which involved resetting lots of shit and installing a eSIM.

On the bright side, they did an account review and because raisins and my account being a business account, I get a free iPad with free data service. I pay $125 and they credit that to my account within three billing cycles so the iPad is effectively free. I really don't understand some of Sprint's promotions. When I opened this account I got something like $75 for every line of service I opened, all of the lines past 3 had free unlimited service and I got free phones also. All in I made something like $500-600 and ended up opening 4-5 extra lines that I didn't actually need. I kept waiting for the catch on that one and it turned out that there wasn't one. Just free shit. :mlp_shrug:

Yes, kinda. GetPlayerState() returns CachedPlayerState if it is not nullptr, otherwise sets CachedPlayerState from Character (no it does not check if Character is valid).

I don't know why we're "caching" the pointer anyways, it doesn't change and (I assume) it's a preoptimization since getting the player state from Character is also literally just returning yet another cached pointer. 🤦🏻♂

I'm not going to fix it because what would be the point?

    Thanks for the hint anyway.

  • @topspin said in WTF Bites:

I don't want to go full @Levicki, but if fucking porn sites can get a pure HTML/JS video chat site going, why can't Microsoft?

It's not that simple. Skype, the not-for-business one, has been HTML/JS application in web or electron for about 3 years and it worked on all platforms since they switched to it. And the rewrite to that happened under Microsoft already. When they bought Skype, it had native clients (that existed for all platforms and looked very differently on each).

On the other hand Teams, which is a HTML/JS application since the beginning, could only call on Windows, and in browser it could only call in Edge (writing worked fine everywhere). Until some 2 days ago. Meanwhile there was a user-agent-faking hack, which made calls work in Chromium, but some other things broke, and this Ismael Martinez was maintaining a mostly working unofficial package by wrapping the web in Electron with some suitable polyfills.

Microsoft is not doing much about Skype-for-Business anymore as they are replacing it with Teams, to get their own walled garden. Because, you see, Skype-for-Business is mostly standard SIP/SIMPLE protocol, the same used by most VoIP phones, while Teams is yet another special snowflake.

Aside from the helpful department: The Pidgin-SIPE 1.24 is still somewhat unstable, but colleague who installed 1.25 reports it finally works fine with Skype-for-Business including conference calls.

    @levicki said in WTF Bites:

Did you know that (if your admin allows that) you can join Skype for Business calls using Microsoft Teams which you can use from web browser?

Does that work again? Because ~2 years ago when we switched to Teams there was some cross-communication happening between them, but these days they generally behave incompatibly.

Also, not sure whether it works already now they moved the Linux client to public beta, but before that the web client was not willing to call in any other browser than Edge anyway.

  • I made the mistake of wanting to do something simple in a webpage. I wanted to size a div according to an aspect ratio, up to a certain maximum size, based on its container dimensions. Apparently, this is literally impossible to do in pure CSS. You can have it lock to an aspect ratio using a hack, sure, and you can set a maximum size, sure, but if you want both at the same time you are just screwed. Something that I assume nearly every layout engine in existence supports, has never once been supported in web browsers.

It gets better. CSS supports background-size: contain and background-size: cover. These both ask the browser to do the needful and calculate the proper dimensions for the background-image regardless of the size of its container, while maintaining the image's aspect ratio. Then you can use width, height, max-width, max-height, etc as normal. This lets you display an image, as long as you don't care about the user not being able to right click and save the image or open it in a new tab, and you don't care about actual proper dimensions for the div, etc. But hey, the browser does the super simple math for you because browsers can do simple math for you. It's a thing browsers can just do, easily, without fussing, and it's pure CSS.

But if you want to get that same functionality for a generic element instead of a background-image, nope, impossible, browser can't do it, everyone suggests JavaScript instead, just throw more JavaScript at the problem until we don't even need the browser anymore, that solves all problems with absolutely zero performance penalty and certainly won't annoy those users who disable JavaScript. :wtf:

At least some people realized this was bad and we are getting aspect-ratio someday, maybe...
