Aww, guys, you dont like meh splashy... :)
Actually, I always thought "TRWTF are you guys complaining about a dev build splash screen that is actually hilarious", but I wasn't in the mood to start an argument about this irrelevant thing. You see, fights about unimportant stuff in this forum will inevitably turn into a five-page flamewar about variable naming conventions or whether Visual Studio is superior to Chromium OS or some bullshit. If you want proof, just check out an arbitrary thread in the sidebar that is longer than two pages.
I'm surprised this is still somewhat accurate.

Eight years later, I'll bite. Lots of dour, joyless people here eh? GIMP is a fun name, its negative connotations are only valid in the US, the splash screen is fun too (and a development build), and the point of that kind of open source is that it doesn't have to cave in to marketing considerations. It's like people complaining that brutal metal band "Dying Fetus" has a tasteless name. Yeah it's not exactly "mature" and "professional". Meh.
(Adobe Photoshop is simply a much better programme. But GIMP can hold its own, and is more than enough for simple editing).

As a Brit, I can conclusively say you're more full of shit than a blocked toilet
-
@Jaloopa gimp isn't much used in the UK. Brits have their own slurs. Each area of the UK has its own slur actually. If things have changed, it's because you have imported it (how decadent). My British mum doesn't even know what it means, I think.
EDIT: no, she doesn't.
-
@admiral_p ok. Thanks for the lesson on my culture. I was sure I remembered most kids in my school in the 90s knowing what it meant but you've found an old woman who doesn't so I must be wrong
-
@Jaloopa just admit you're secretly an American and move on
-
@pie_flavor you've got me. It was the rampant love of guns and hatred of healthcare wasn't it?
-
@Jaloopa as Morrissey says, when you're in Britain you don't feel in Britain any more.
-
@Jaloopa You just couldn't fake the crippling self-loathing and desire to be subjugated hard enough.
-

Hey, @Gribnit, you left yourself logged in to the wrong alt account again
-
@Jaloopa am I (actually, is Morrissey) even wrong? Even chippies are hard to find these days.
-
@admiral_p Morrissey is the guy who played Tony in Men Behaving Badly, and voiced Bob the Builder right?
-
@Jaloopa I meant the more musical Morrissey. But Men Behaving Badly is/was hilarious, if laddish.
Would Yer Da ever say gimp?

My dad died three months ago, you insensitive clod
-
@Jaloopa see? He wouldn't.
Anyway, Brits are a load of wankers anyway.

You're a gimp.

Have you confused Britain with somewhere else?
Chip shops are everywhere.
Or are you talking about carpenters, which aren't hard to find either?
-
@loopback0 last time I went to Middlesbrough, there were like ten proper fish and chip shops in town. It used to be one at every corner!
(I was pulling your leg, anyway. Do not take these things seriously. But seriously, I've never heard "gimp" used in the UK, neither in conversation, nor on TV, even the edgy stuff).
-
@admiral_p It's used plenty. Maybe not in Middlesborough but they don't even speak English there anyway.

One time, I installed GIMP for a guy who had a gimp leg. He thought the name was pretty funny.
There are 3 meanings that I know of:
- the intended one
- the unintended one (a cripple or a limp)
- the Pulp Fiction one (bondage suit)
-
Also UK slang meaning stupid, inept etc.
-
@loopback0 I suspect that's a bastardization of the "cripple" meaning.
-
@anotherusername It may be or may not be derived from that but it's a different meaning.

Except the pages are now infinitely long.

@admiral_p interestingly on the GIMP webpage that splashscreen is missing on the Development Version Splash History pages

It has if it wants to be used by professionals. At the very least, it has to be SFW.

I'd certainly complain if I had to use Dying Fetus for my daily job. And if I weren't, I'd certainly never try to convince my boss we should start using Dying Fetus in our project.

Their employers sure do. Assuming they have any.

No, just someone who knows the difference between program and programme and tries to be helpful to those who don't.
-
@Gąska which employer really cares? Especially when it's free, and an employer minimally familiar with the world of open source knows that quirky names are common in open source?

That's one bold assumption you make.

Subversion.
-
@pie_flavor is that name supposed to be funny or quirky somehow? If so, I totally ed.
-
@Gąska The definition of 'Subversion' from Dictionary.com:
noun
- an act or instance of subverting.
- the state of being subverted; destruction.
- something that subverts or overthrows.
Or if you want the definition of the verb:
verb (used with object)
- to overthrow (something established or existing).
- to cause the downfall, ruin, or destruction of.
- to undermine the principles of; corrupt.
Should be safe to let you keep your source code in it, right?

No, just someone who knows the difference between program and programme and tries to be helpful to those who don't.
But not helpful enough to explain the difference, just enough to make yourself feel superior
