portraying Ada as a revolutionary advance was good for publicity. But there were technical as well as marketing reasons why the language wasn’t named “Robespierre,” “Trotsky,” or “Che,”
-
1983 - In honor of Ada Lovelace's ability to create programs that never ran, Jean Ichbiah and the US Department of Defense create the Ada programming language. In spite of the lack of evidence that any significant Ada program is ever completed historians believe Ada to be a successful public works project that keeps several thousand roving defense contractors out of gangs.

Why is that a thing?Have you never wondered why certain sites don't care that you've never updated the expiration date and cvv number?
-
@Tsaukpaetra it just... That seems wrong. Like.. storing passwords in plain text wrong.
Then again it's the credit card system so wrong is kinda the modus operandi
-
@sloosecannon I'm sure there's a thread about here somewhere...

This must be a US thing as it's not a thing here in the UK.

It does mean that there's a clear gap in the market for programmers who also understand the science.
Would you mind providing a few examples of/pointers to that gap? I'm considering it as an exit strategy after getting a natural sciences PhD, but I don't quite see it when I search for it on e.g. StackOverflow jobs. I must be looking at it wrong.
Try looking for "Research Software Engineer". (That is an Engineer of Research Software; I didn't pick the name.) There's nothing particularly common to all people in the role, except that a great many are scientists who "fell off the wagon" of publish-or-perish and found software more basically interesting than the science being done with it. Be prepared to learn whatever tools are required for the project you support; those projects can be of all sorts of lengths, depending on discipline.
At WTF-U, the pool of RSEs doesn't just work on supporting science projects. We do quite a bit of work with Humanities and Arts faculties, though I don't personally as my skillset and their needs don't synergise well. I instead do long-term secondments to science projects, with a focus on productisation (taking code that works for one person on a good day with a following wind and turning it into programs that can be widely deployed and used). But not everyone who is in a role that ought to be characterised as an RSE is formally in such; people have grown adept at hiding that that's what they need (and I gather that that's true in many other universities too, according to the grapevine).

Bill was apparently paid yesterday, but in accordance to the fact that I didn't get the normal midnight build notifications, it's still not working. I look forward to Monday.

Status: Day 2 of the four day migrate to virtual servers and cloud services is complete. Of course it's probably one of the hottest, nicest, bank-holiday weekends ever and I'm stuck in a chilly server room, at least I get overtime! No wait, it's the other one; I'm a salaried employee :(
I'm definitely going to write a huge Microsoft WTF thread after this is over, nothing bloody works. Exchange migration: broken, Online Exchange management if you have ADSync on and no on-prem: completely pants-on-head, PST import into Online Exchange: will drive you to murder, Hyper-V: well, that actually works properly...someone else must have written it.
And the documentation for everything, it's wrong, contridicts itself, leaves out critical information (like very important switches on certain commands) and is hard to find. I'll stop there before I get angry again.I have a quadruple vodka now, cheers!

@Cursorkeys You must have been typing it wrong.

Status: Yeah...kinda irritated right now.
I mentioned about two weeks ago that I was having home AC issues and had a leak detection done (which would take two weeks to do). They were supposed to come out this coming Friday to check it out. Last night the system failed again, same symptoms (which reduce to "low pressure due to leaking"). So as to not cause damage by running it at critically-low pressure, I called the service folks today. Took a look at the evaporator coil and it was a whole mess of leaks. Both sides.
This is the replacement coil, installed about 14 months ago, under warranty. Turns out Lennox has a history of making bad evaporator coils, to the point that they settled a class-action a few years ago about it. But these new coils were supposed to be the coated, "redesigned" ones that should be resistant or immune to that corrosion. But no.
So now I'm looking at a much larger bill (assuming they don't honor the warranty) and taking time off from work to sit here while it's fixed. Plus having to deal with a week of shoddy AC. Just what I needed.
Resolved: never buy anything made by Lennox or its subsidiary brands ever again.

Status: Too tired to do anything (even concentrate on media), but I know if I go to sleep now I'll regret it tomorrow because my sleep patterns will be totally out of whack. I want August to be over. And September, but that's secondary. Maybe by October it will have cooled down enough to be habitable here.

Yeah...I have to go to work tomorrow. Got a lot of crap to do. This weekend was supposed to be a chance to rest after a very exhausting week last week (first week of classes is always draining). But no. Not so much.

Status: Day 3, mail is flowing into and out of O365 now. My temporary Postfix email queue-thing worked, no email was lost/stuck betwixt. Old DC is ready to be decommissioned. All Workstations are prepped for joining to the new domain. All LOB applications are migrated and have been beaten until they worked.
Feeling good about tomorrow, all PST imports to O365 are done, one little network config change to isolate the old SBS2008 server in it's own lonely VLAN, and then a bit of polishing with GPOs and similar things on the new Domain.

Except that downvoting on Youtube comments does absolutely nothing because they defused that a long time ago, because presumably "targeted downvotes is the biggest threat to the site".
Or is that actually @Tsaukpaetra's plan all along?

Precisely. I'm pretty sure you can't even see the number/amount of downvotes.

Status: New computer (except GPU) now ready for pickup. Hopefully the monday meeting will be free of unnecessary waffling so I can go home earlier than usual.
