My gaming rig has been complaining that I need to apply some update or another for a while now. I shut it down every evening, so it's got plenty of opportunity to do it's updating stuff, but nooo... It wants a restart. And it won't nag me until it's been running for a couple of hours, when I'm in "Im doing shit right now" territory. And when I'm done I shut it down, I don't want to fuck around with restarting and THEN shutting down.
Why the hell can't it just do the update on a normal shutdown?Because you're running hybrid shutdown, which isn't actually a shutdown.
Well, it's MS standard settings, so whatever it is, it's their stupid shenanigans.
That's weird. I always get the "Update and shutdown" option in that case.
I usually do as well, not this time though.
Maybe this time the update wasn't secure enough.
You mean as in "signed using the suspicious SHA-2 instead of the tried-and-
testedbroken SHA1"?On a scale of one to ten, how much more suspicious is WPA3 in comparison?

Roughly like MP5 vs. MP3.

@LaoC So the input method system in Windows is even more of a steaming pile of shit than it is under X11?
Hate to be arguing for Windows, but I'm going to go with "No" on that one.
There is no access control in CTF, so you could connect to another user's active session and take over any application, or wait for an Administrator to login and compromise their session.
Taking over an admin's applications on another active session is quite a bit worse than X11 though. Applications are not isolated in any meaningful sense, but sessions are.

Yeah, when I see "Update and Reboot", plain old "Shutdown" is never an option. We're updating dammit!

You can hold it as much as you like, but if you don't clutch you're going to have a bad time...

How do you people get by with that? I've just started shutting my machine down each night and starting it back up in the morning because letting it sit overnight (as seen upthread) resulted in even shittier behavior than normal.
My work desktop (Windows 7) and my home desktop (Windows 10) are always on and they're both fine.
This post must've angered the Computer Gods. I had to restart my work desktop earlier today because something was mysteriously consuming most of the RAM.

For some unknown reason, after Windows Update these shown in my start menu.

RSAT is now installed using powershell cmdlets or dism tool, it's not standalone package anymore (it is a FOD) and it can't be installed using the old installer.
Correct. Almost. You can also install it using Optional Features (which is essentially the same as a DISM command).
Doesn't help either way.
-
@Tsaukpaetra I gave up on using RSAT after the 72,000th time it got uninstalled by Windows Update and now I just RD into the server cause I know that'll work...

Yeah, except now all my servers are server Core and can't have them. I'm going to provision a babysitter VM to use in the occasion I need it.

And people wonder why I hate "modern" Start pane... There is no interface programatic or otherwise that I am aware of which you could use to edit the contents of it. For example, you can't remove the stupid Connect or Microsoft Edge entries from the list. Metro applications list is a virtual namespace implemented in code and only Microsoft knows how to add and remove shit to/from it.
Classic Shell or bust.

Best $4 you can spend on Windows 10.

^ ^ this. I recently discovered I actually have icons on my desktop.

Something something Launchy, you don't need stupid start menu, etc
-
@hungrier said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

You're starting to sound like Jeff.
-
I'm speaking for myself. When I first started using Launchy on Windows XP I stopped using the start menu entirely. Then, when more modern Windows versions introduced the textbox in the start menu I used that, until Windows 10 screwed it up again. Now I'm back to Launchy and more convinced than ever that it was foolish to stop using it.
-
I tried Launchy once as a Windows alternative to macOS' Spotlight and didn't like it.
I used Classic Start Menu on Windows 8 and continued to use it on 10, although I recently uninstalled it as the menu in 10 now is fine.

Are you concerned with issues you don't use? Is this is a major issue?
What about all the stuff that came with previous versions of Windows you didn't use?
I'm reasonably sure (but don't care enough to reinstall it) that Classic Start Menu showed Edge anyway. Most of my use of the start menu is + type search term so I'm not even seeing Edge.

@loopback0 said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

All the items in the menu in the previous Windows versions were files on the filesystem which you could move or delete if you didn't use them.
Some of the items in the new start pane are part of a virtual Metro/UWP Applications namespace hardcoded in the Windows DLLs.
Classic start could show those applications but it was optional.
I'm just kinda curious if those extra icons actually affect anything or if you're just bitching for bitching's sake. Because when there's an icon on my computer that I don't use I generally just ignore it. Especially if it comes with Windows. Because it's really not hurting anything just sitting there.
But I guess I just don't have enough Micro$haft right?

I just unpin it. I don't really care if it's still sitting in the file system. (And I don't really care if it's in the A-Z start list as I rarely look at that)

Low blood sugar will do that to you. You should add some sugar to your food.

@dcon it seems the complaint is that it can't be removed from the A-Z list though. Yeah, I get unpinning it... Even though I've probably (?) never actually done that. But who cares that there's an extra icon in the A-Z list zomgwhatevershallwedo
