You'd think that, but then I'd be sad at the week of development it took to get mine reasonably functional (and it doesn't even count floors at present!)

Yes. The answer is always yes. At least have a spare handy if it's at all important.
Once Upon A Time I worked for Hard Drive Technical Support (Retail). I can't believe the number of times people would call in say "My business is down! I can't do anything!" My immediate thought was always "Why are you talking to me? We're not going to get you a drive in less than a couple days. Go get another drive from your local Worst Buy-equivalent, get your stuff up and running from that backup I'm sure you've been making diligently, and then call us for a replacement." Sadly I wasn't allowed to tell them that and could do nothing but listen to them complain while I set up their RMA.
At least they weren't as bad as the people who hadn't gotten their rebates.

Oh sure, I'm going to run a replace on it as soon as the current scrub finishes (about 7am tomorrow morning) with a spare. Coincidentally, I'll also be swapping the drives out to a newer tower so I can use the newer CPU and bigger RAM (a bump from 2.13GHz dual-core and 12 GB of RAM to 2.6 GHz and 24 GB of RAM).
Just funny how I was literally going to do maintenance tomorrow and lo an issue pops up that needs my attention...

True this. I got this server replicating onsite to a brand-new one a month or so ago, and that's been fine. Online backups are mystery at the moment. I plan to have to do that myself too (their IT guy isn't the best...).

So, so true.
Unusually, my Mom (making some extra money doing taxes and other accounting work from home) was very diligent about keeping a backup of the DOS machine we had when I was a kid. I was assigned to floppy swapping duty for the big backups; she copied her current work onto different floppies daily.

@izzion Honestly it's no wonder PHP and Javascript dominate the market. This thing is super complex, and Microsoft doesn't seem to give a shit about learning curve.

Sounds less like diligence and more like good parenting.

Nah. I think she would have done it herself or made my stepdad do it if I weren't there and a computer nerd.

I just don't have time for that, sadly. I can hardly keep up with the fiction I'm reading, much less write up new content!

While I assume there are chairs involved, it says something about #GalaCon. Not that I know what that is, either.
Admittedly, I kind of like the LLVM ponydragon.

I don't know what you're talking about...

First, I spent $10 to learn I didn't want to spend $100 for a table at a local toy show. Dodged a bullet there.
Then I remembered why I hate to buy shipping supplies. I ran out of peanuts last week and only have a dozen boxes left. So, off to ULine, where a $20 bag of peanuts costs $17 to ship and $20 worth of boxes costs $17 to ship. It sounds terrible but it's 2/3 of what they cost on Amazon even with Prime. So I really wanted to order 2 bags of peanuts and 2 sizes of boxes...but $80 worth of supplies costs $80 to ship. From 2 hours away. Absolutely ridiculous.
Because capex put me behind earlier and a disastrous April show kept me there, I have to minimize spending for the rest of the year in the hopes that my good show, a mixed bag, and three unknowns will be enough to get back over zero. There's so much stuff I need to keep up and I can't justify it. So I was only able to order half the boxes/peanuts I really needed and I still feel ripped off on shipping.
What else? Debating whether or not to go to work tomorrow. The job is like straightening the picture frames in a house that's on fire. I mean why bother? Other than needing the paycheck of course.
-

Think of it this way: most people work for paycheck alone anyway. Sounds like you have a cool hobby/side business; isn't that enough, purpose-wise?

I've been burned out on the hobby/business. Remember when you were a kid and you thought developing video games would be super cool? And then you went to work for EA and they worked you into a psych ward or the emergency room. It's a constant stream of "oh, that's so cool, I'd love to carry it...but I can't sit on it for 3 years while people offer 10 cents on the dollar." If I do sit on stuff, the price I can get for it triples over retail, but I hate doing that to people, but they deserve it for dragging their feet, and...
And at work I have more of an A-type personality. I hate sitting on my hands waiting for Indians to figure stuff out. Every time I hand over instructions (that they never follow), I'm wondering why we've got to wait 6 months for them to do it wrong when I could do it right in 6 hours. I want to get back into development but every place I apply to shuts me down for not being in a development role for the last 6 months and it's only going to get worse the longer this goes on so there's this deep-seated fear that I'll never have a job that matters ever again. It's making me bored and angry at the same time and I don't know how much longer I can hide how crazy it's making me.
-
@Zenith said in The Official Status Thread:

Many (most? all?) of us were crazy before we found TDWTF. Of course, finding it hasn't improved the situation.

Status: Phew, that was grueling.
I decided to manually hand-upgrade my FreeNAS's database from a factory-reset template, in attempt to eliminate the possibility that some weird stale configurations from major versions past were fucking things up. End result: .... Kinda?
The hardest part was discovering that when re-packing the config file (it's just a tar.gz with the sqlite3 database and a raw encryption key), the system "forgot" to install the encryption key ( ) and weird shit happens when the key is valid but wrong, but the devs didn't anticipate that happening and so BAD SHIT happens and you don't even get a login prompt.
Happy fun times were spent in Single-User Mode.
Edit: Oh for fucks... No wonder the system was rebooting "randomly"!!!
Fucking IPMI thought that since the watchdog service wasn't pinging (presumably, because Single-User Mode) the system was hung and rebooted itself. Well, glad that's over in any case...

My experience with Fitbit support has always been that good. I only stopped patronizing them because I had to use their support so often (once I was on my third replacement band I said "fuck it, the quality of these bands isn't any good").
