The real reason why Edge deserves to crash and burn
-
Remember when people were upset that Firefox added a few sponsored links?
-
@anonymous234 So they've managed to replicate the Xbox 360 experience on Windows but even worse?
-
If this were Google, I'd know for certain that
- You're over 40, possibly over 50
- You live in Spain (or speak Spanish natively)
- You deal with other languages and/or regions sometimes
But this is not Google. So, how many points did it get right?
-
@acrow That's what Edge thinks, so he's probably a three year old Malaysian girl
-
-
@acrow I live in Spain, but none of the others.
I changed the settings to English/US so I get US news, but apparently "English expat in Spain" ads. Might explain why it's so focused on the translator thing.
I clicked on that magic translator device, by the way. It needs to connect to your smartphone (so it's probably just a wrapper around Google Translate) and costs 90€. But you can get 5 for the cost of 3!

FTFY
-
To be fair the only thing that should suprise us is that Google didn't do it first.
-
@anonymous234 Why not just set a homepage? You don't have to start with that tab open if you don't want to.

True, but remember that there are a lot of people who won’t even know they can change that, and so get served ads like that every time they open their web browser.

Course you can't. Hardly any page has a 'make this my homepage' button anymore.
Or am I misremembering things.

The sort of people who raged when Farcebook wasn't top of the search results for 'facebook login' (remember that? It was very funny at the time) most certainly would.
-
@Seppen said in The real reason why Edge deserves to crash and burn:
remember that?
No. I happily don't remember it at all.
-
@dkf Unfortunately I can't find the link to it now. It was several years ago at least. Basically, someone wrote a blog about facebook and this was for a while at the top of searches for 'facebook login'. Performing this search, and clicking on the top link, turned out to be the method thousands of FB users used. The comments under the blog were all rage posts along the lines of 'what have you done with my facebook! Bring it back now!' This ended up being 10s of thousands of posts, inspiring parodies and much mirth for a while. It was around the time that farming game was trending.
-
I don't mind the chick with the shark. The rest of that is complete noise, though.

But, at some point, you would think people would say "This is really fucking annoying, I wonder if there's a way to stop it", and spend a few minutes searching for a way to do it.
But, apparently not. Which I find really bizarre.
-
For some reason I read that as "the real reason Epic deserves to crash and burn."
-
@Tsaukpaetra I suspect that the reason you think Epic should crash and burn, and the eight-letter reason everyone else on this board would cite, are not the same one...

@Tsaukpaetra The rest of us would say Fortnite is why they should go down. As someone working with the Unreal Engine on a daily basis pretty sure you'd name something in there instead.

No, they need to go down because they're not getting us out of debt...

They did search for a way, but couldn't find any. That's what happens when using Bing

People don't do that. And that's not just a computer thing, it works in every context.

You can do that from JavaScript?
Is that back from the days where every bad idea had a corresponding JS API?
I wonder if still works and if it’s at least rate limited (like alerts) by now (assuming it needs user approval in the first place), so you can’t just spam a million requests to change the home page.

Nope. There is a nearly zero chance of anyone doing that. Nobody knows why.

Yeah, it's really really hard to change. On my work desktop where "some settings are controlled by your organisation", it's the second setting, right below choosing light vs dark theme.

Oh yes, I would appear interested, tell me more, yes, what about, hmm, sure, I was just thinking, that's right, just waiting for the best possible moment to slam the door.
Lady, your smile and figure sells me you, and not that premium property insurance. I don't even have any properties, but let me just find where I parked my Ferrari.

You can do that from JavaScript?

Because I have very good credit, I often get offers of zero percent interest for balance transfers. So, if I need to make a big purchase, I put in on one card then before the first payment is due transfer it to a 0% card where I can get a few months, sometimes a year or more, of zero interest while I pay off the debt. I've actually done that several times over the years.

@Unperverted-Vixen "Epic Games Store" is more than eight letters
-
@hungrier Touché. (Although it's not the store that's the problem, per se, it's the blatant bribing of publishers to not use other stores that's the problem.)
