Potatoes… in SPAAAAACE!
-
@dkf If you count a silhouette, I hanzo'd you
-
@kazitor You could also look into Elite Dangerous screenshots; there are some really nice looking things in that game.
And fields of potatoes, if that's what you're into

Where do y'all get your wallpapers anyways? I use nothing but unsplash.
-
@stillwater Mine all come from http://hubblesite.org/
-
@stillwater I haven't got any new wallpapers in a few years, but when I did I got them from Wallbase and later Wallhaven.

If you can share the high def image it'd be cool.
I'm pretty sure the original was meant for a 640x480 monitor.

Status: Finally found a cloning/imaging solution which works reliably, is moderately easy to setup and doesn't cost a metric ton of money:
I actually gave up on Clonezilla as their solution only boots my Surfaces properly in about 1 out of 6 attempts (and it takes about 2 minutes from reboot to the point where it fails so you can calculate the time it takes on average to get a mere 5 devices to begin imaging).
The other contender was CloneDeploy but their installation process was "copy&paste a bunch of shell commands" which did not include clear instructions on how to configure the DHCP to work with their PXE boot image...

I make them myself. First one lasted a year, and I haven't had this computer long enough for the current one to get that old.

I have an animated rippling Arstotzka flag from Wallpaper Engine. If I were to change it, I'd probably change it to another Wallpaper Engine profile.

Status: Back at work after my fun week of having the flu. Just a lingering cough which will probably stick around for ages. Out of diseases having to stay home for, flu is probably one of the worse as it causes zero ability to do anything but lying in bed at its worse, as near-40C fever is good at knocking most people out.
At least my cat could be happy over me spending a lot of time just resting, giving her something warm to cuddle up with for sleep...
Also, my bathroom is now done so I can live in my house again!
-
@bb36e You could always develop x if you really need it so much, and then sell it at a reasonable price to others because others probably need it too, and use that money to compensate for the time it took you to develop!

It seems to be the hair-shirt of programming, people insist they like it because they're real programmers...while furtively scratching furiously when they hope no-one is looking.

I've heard that because of the way it stores things internally you can't really recover from corruption, so just restore from backups if it goes wrong. I use hosted Subversion so the provider takes care of daily backups for me.
I've never had a single issue yet though, then again I never had any issues with Windows ME either...

Status: Whoever developed auto-billing can go die in a fire. I just had my car insurance cancelled due to non-payment because something in their auto-billing system failed and I guess it's too difficult to either try again or perhaps notify me that I had a payment due.
As bad as IT really is, I'm dumbfounded that the world works as well as it does.
Good grief. So, basically my credit card was compromised and locked due to a fraudulent charge...but nobody told me this. Then everything I have set up to auto-bill on that card got rejected...and nobody told me this. Not a single company alerted me and said "Hey, our transaction was rejected, wanna fix that for us?" Now I was just notified by my landlords that my renters insurance was cancelled and that needs to be addressed ASAP. Looked it up, and yep, it was cancelled due to non-payment and my insurance provider never told me this even though they told my landlords.
You couldn't make this system worse if you tried.
The saga continues. I received two related emails this morning. The first one was from my bank, informing me that a new credit card was just mailed out and I should receive it in a few days. Yay!
The second email was from my bank, warning me that fraudulent charges were just detected on my credit card. On the brand-new card. The one with a new number. The one that is almost certainly still sitting in a mail outbox somewhere.

@mott555 you sure it's the new one? and they didn't actually let charges go through on the old one 'for convenience'?

That would be an almost equally big though.
-
@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:

That would totally invalidate the purpose behind cancelling a compromised card and getting a new card number though.
EDIT: Old card was already cancelled. I figured that out a while ago when I tried to use it and it didn't work. So huge WTF if they blocked me from using it but allowed a charge detected by the fraud department.
-
@mott555 And it would also be what I've seen complained about in this thread.

As long as that host isn't SourceForge. I had corruption. I reported it. They did nothing. It grew. I moved to github. (Figuring out how to export all the history and skip that corruption was time consuming)

status Customer service exists!!!!
I bought a chew-proof dog bed a couple days ago (not cheap - about $90US). 2 PVC corners are now gone.
- Contacted company (via Amazon) "Can I buy replacement parts, my dog chewed them up"
- Amazon said "allow up to 2 days for a response"
- Company responded 5 minutes later: "That's covered under warranty. Send pictures to start process"
- I send pictures
- Couple hours later: "we're sending new metal parts"
Gasp! Covered by warranty, and they're sending upgraded parts! They'll get my business again!

A few years ago my credit card was flagged for suspicious activity and immediately cancelled for my convenience, and by the time they called they had already sent a new one. I could still use the old card, but only in chip-and-PIN terminals, or online with SecurePay or whatever it's called. So, at least theoretically, if any charges did go through on the card they would be $100% secure and Albert Einstein would start a slow clap. In practice, though, I had to ask my dad to buy me a thing that was on sale, because they didn't use SecurePay and there was no way the card would arrive before the sale was done.

Status: Coworkers product is broken and the customer needs it now, so I've stepped in to rescue it. Noticed that some things go in one end and then magically come out somewhere that thing should never do.
This seems odd, did you know it did this?
Oh yeah, I got A and B backwards so a shim swaps them round.
But they're tagged the wrong thing now?
But they go in the right place
Also a couple were wrong more than once, so some things have multiple swaps through other things. It was quicker to just keep adding swaps.
