    My new shiny, as @Tsaukpaetra put it, doesn't have a CDMA radio. Calling and data worked fine just by swapping in the SIM card, but texting did not, so I had to switch to the old phone just to call Verizon in the first place because they send you a text code you have to enter in the call. There's an easy fix - tell Verizon to add CDMA-less roam to your account, whatever the fuck that means. Should be a fairly simple operation. Instead I end up having to restart my phone a total of 5 times, change the PIN on the SIM card, confirm that yes I was really sure I wanted to ever use this brand new very expensive phone, install four different SMS apps, and get shuttled between customer support, tech support, billing, tech support tier 2, the physical phone repair outlet in Providence RI (you'd like me to be being sarcastic here, but that's literally who I got transferred to), and tech support tier 3. All the while saying exactly what I wanted done to my account and that it works for everyone else with this problem. T3 was absolutely flummoxed when doing what I asked fixed the problem. :facepalm:

    👨 Hey Lorne, you said you had ideas on doing project scoping better.
    👦🏻 .oO {you mean actually doing technical scoping to discover risks & hurdles, consult the developers who know the system, and then go over it with QA so they can weigh in on test scenarios that the developer has to do before giving it to QA so they stop giving broken shit to QA, and also let QA point out where all the regressions are, and also if at any point during this process someone doesn't 100% fully understand the client's requirements or how a specific scenario would play out, to go back to the client and get it verified-- and then and only then come up with the number of hours this project will take and thus be billed to the customer}
    👦🏻 yeah
    👨 Okay, I'm going to send you a change document. Scope it and get me numbers. I've schedule you 4 hours.
    👦🏻 ok
    👨 {walks away}
    💻 HEY ASSHOLE YOU'VE GOT 📧 HAHAHAH!
    👦🏻 {opens Word document}. So by a "change request", you mean this is a brand new customer and thus this is an entire project, not just a change. Okay. What do we have here so far?
    {vague This Is What The Customer Wants wordings, a bit of if/then logic that doesn't cover all the Elses}.
    👦🏻 Um. Hmm. Okay.
    👦🏻 {spends four hours going over just the first few of 14 parts}
    👦🏻 {on Slack throughout the day}
    👦🏻 What about their internal salespeope?
    👦🏻 It says "QA ensure item name has been changed" but there is nothing anywhere that talks about changing an item name. Wrong or missing?
    👦🏻 This concept of "ordering out of stock", we have the same UI presented in two different ways because we sometimes do and sometimes don't allow partial orders, huh?
    👦🏻 It says to assign this data to contacts, but not who is doing it or how?
    👦🏻 And this change to Add to Cart, you have it on the product page, but you realize there's add to cart in order history and upsell controls and Favorites and so many other places, that's going to be, like, a four-fold increase in effort?
    👦🏻 They want to search by Author Name, but did anyone consider that Stephen King and King, Stephen are equivalent?
    👦🏻 Our file transfer system doesn't do that. Are we going to rewrite it?
    👦🏻 etc
    👦🏻 {12 work hours later} Okay, I finally have it mostly done. There's some open questions, and some sections that still need to be fleshed out with dev and QA, but I don't see any roadblocks or risks there. Here's the time estimate.
    👦🏻 {hands over estimate of ~500 hours of work}
    👨 wow that's higher than I expected.
    ...
    ...
    ...
    👦🏻 .o0 { THEN WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU EXPECTING? You've been the one talking to the customer and gathering these technical details for how long now? Did you not get a sense that maybe they were asking for a lot and you weren't considering the entire technical impact?

    Maybe it's good that I did look this over and get a high number, because otherwise we'd be in the exact same goddamn boat as we always are: no one thinks through or plans the projects properly. Most of the allocated time is burned by PMs constantly going back to client for clarifications, and Devs having incomplete specs, and work having to be redone-- that by the time QA happens the budget's almost all but gone. And since Dev didn't have the info they needed to succeed, QA finds tons of overlooked things, and then there is back and forth between QA and Dev, Dev and QA, QA to PM, PM back to customer, over and over and over. So much back and forth that QA barely gets through a smoke-test, let alone having the time for regression testing or edge case testing or anything else. So QA, through no fault of their own, blows through the rest of the budget and more.

    And at some point the PM always ends up going back to the customer for a clarification of something which ends revealing we ovelooked a feature or scenario which ends up having a MASSIVE technical cost associated with it! But we agreed to these numbers, and there's enough conversations and emails and whathaveyou with the customer that it's obvious that yes, this is how the feature should have worked.

    So Dev has to add in a whole bunch more code, which causes more QA and more regressions and back and forth-- until we're right up against the delivery deadline so everyone is stressed and tired and making mistakes and resentful of their job and the company. And then we deliver what we think is done, but because everyone was in rushing stuff was overlooked, so now the customer is finding tons of stuff in UAT that we have to fix for free.

    So in the end we're 500% over budget so the project is at-cost at best, if not a loss. And then we end up with a ticked off customer who has damaged confidence in us. And the QA and PM and Developers involved in the project feel like shit because of everything that happened so now we have lots of employee turnover!}

    👦🏻 yup. Let me know if you have any questions about the numbers.

    I'm still trying to prove to them that fixing something sooner in the SDLC is better, because each phase you delay it by increases the cost of that fix by an order of magnitude.

    "You're spending 4 hours doing the scoping?!?"

    "We didn't spend those 4 hours, and it became three and a half weeks of unbillable time during QA."

    No, but I googled it and found that for another site (video streaming) they have been legally required to install a block (yes, that's stupid), so I assumed they're doing something similar. The fact that they didn't blackhole the IP and just installed an entry in their DNS forwarding to a notice makes me believe they intentionally did as little as they were legally required to do.
