Rumours: Microsoft to buy github

@gąska money has never, ever been rejected by free software, even hard-line free software leaders. Just like many mistake leftist ideologies as pauperist (that's Christianity really).

which they lately brought up from sucking really, really hard to a match for the best.
Well it helps that the "best" from BitBucket, GitHub, and Atlassian whatsiscalled is really shitty.
All source control software (and associated websites) are pretty goddamned awful. I'd love to see Microsoft, or anybody, actually spend time doing a detailed UX review and usability study of their source control software and implement the results.
But that'll never happen because "you don't need to be usable if your audience is software developers". And since "software developers" chose Git! of all options for their source control client, who can blame anybody for thinking that.
"I mean hell, if they're ok with Git, they're ok with just having steaming hot cat turds shoved down their throat every day. Why should we try?"

Because they can take your glitter but they can't take away your sparkle.

We were thinking of moving to GitHub but the idea was spiked on hearing this. No reason given except that we don't like Microsoft which is strange given how many of their products we use on a daily basis.
A: "Hey we are not gonna use that cos we hate MS"
B: "But we use MS' A, B, C and D every day."
This conversation did not happen?
I was once told to use AWS instead of Azure cos the guy who managed the thing did not like Microsoft. When asked why his reasoing was "Bill Gates hoards money" or some shit like that. You cannot reason with these people!

Yeah but the logic is if he's giving out that much money surely he s hoarding a hundred times more. Indians have trouble understanding the concept of "spending money. A lot of it." :/

@stillwater FWIW, he's been consistently getting richer every year.

But not "the dragon from hobbit sleeping on top of riches" rich. My point is that has got nothing to do with Microsoft being perceived as a bad company.

He's got 70 freaking billion dollars!

True that.

I'd rather have someone who spends so much money on philanthropy control 70 Billion than a Wall street wanker.
-
@stillwater With that much money, he probably controls a whole bunch of Wall Street wankers.
-
@stillwater MS has an history of being cut throat and playing dirty. His recent philanthropy doesn't change anything.

Right; those free shots he's giving people probably have some kind of slow-acting poison! And those mosquito nets? They're made from C4. One press of a button, and WHAM the entire third world will die! Muahahaha!
Seriously, get a grip. WTF man.

Exactly. This is a textbook case of whitewashing one's past.

Well call me crazy but I'd rather him spend his money on vaccinations and mosquito nets than on selling flamethrowers and writing constant insane op-eds about how the Terminator robots are coming to kill us all.

This tweet is funny:
Hey devs #movingtogitlab (to their SaaS version), could you have a look at the IP addresses of @gitlab please? There is no point in moving away from @Github if this is to be finally hosted at @Azure. 🤦♂️ pic.twitter.com/BfWkNsGET5
— w://iam (@wget42) June 4, 2018So, move it or not, your code is still at Microsoft.
What's the point of moving then?
Btw, this is official now, no longer rumours.

Probably been 'd on this somewhere on here, but:

But only sometimes.
Anyway, what's so wrong with suspecting or even detesting a guy who has a checkered past and is sitting over $70b? At the end of the day, he's sitting over $70b. He's not going to feel bad over people thinking he's scum. And if he does, who says he isn't wiping his tears with $100 bills like Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber?

"checkered past"
-

Like... what? All that time in and out of prison, you mean? Oh wait. No.
He did some business deals that a lot of whiny people perceived as unfair. That's it. PayPal did the same, and people think goddamned Elon Musk is the second coming of Christ.

I'm thinking Gates selling drugs, being a badass pimp, strip club owner, Black market weaponry expert, and a few divorces and children he isn't aware of.

@blakeyrat I don't suck Elon Musk's dick (or anybody's, for that matter) so I don't see how this is relevant. Actually, I think he's a huge twat really.
-
@admiral_p Why do you think he's a twat? I'm curious.
-
@boomzilla you don't have to be a full-on mobster to have a checkered past. The company he was founder and CEO of has engaged in repeated anticompetitive and anticonsumer practices, sometimes illegally so (hence the huge fines). He's not a criminal but he's not Jesus either. Besides, he's donating millions but his wealth is measured in the tens of billions, so he's not any more generous than any of us donating money to charity (which, by the way, I'm sort of against doing for a bunch of reasons).
-
@stillwater I have my reasons, but I guess that "he annoys me" suffices anyway. It's not as if I have to justify my antipathy towards people now.
-

No, you don't have to be a mobster but I think you have to be a whole lot worse than Bill Gates. And I certainly don't outsource my views on morality or ethics to antitrust law or judges or bureaucrats.

Ofcourse not.

-
@admiral_p said in Rumours: Microsoft to buy github:

At what? I'm not sure where you're trying to go here.
-
@boomzilla the original conversation was about the fact that Billy Gates donating money to charity doesn't mean anything really and his company (founder and CEO for a large part of its existence) has been sort of scummy at times, abusing its power yadda yadda yadda. So I don't see why we couldn't dismiss his charity efforts as at least potentially whitewashing. Honestly I don't even care that much. I neither think the accusations by his detractors and critics to be "whining" (today's computing has been vastly improved by openness and the sharing culture), neither do I think that he is an inherently evil person (he just did what he had to do as a businessman in his position).
