Venmo social feed is dumb
-
Venmo has had a social component since it launched in 2009. Users see a feed of both their own friends’ payments and total strangers’ activity every time they open the app, and it’s easy to look up users. Exact amounts aren’t listed, but you can see who’s paying who and which words or emoji they use to describe the payment.
I was only vaguely aware of what venmo was () but this sort of feature would go a long ways towards keeping me from ever using it. This article is amazing.
-
But... wha... just... WHY WOULD YOU EVER EVEN USE THIS?
Ok, if it's an easy payment thing and it's the most convenient method (then again, with contactless cards + my bank's app that can scan 2D barcodes off of most bills I get, I can't imagine what I'd need this for as well), fine. But why would you ever even install anything that has an option of sharing your payments, regardless of what the defaults are?!?
Seriously, someone give me a legit reason for this.
-
@onyx Venmo-the-service, so you can split the charge for pizza among several friends without having to deal with grubby paper money, more conveniently than setting up several PayPal request-funds transactions.
Venmo-the-social? I have no fucking clue.

I'd rather just pay the whole bill than muck about with an appservicething tbh. Especially one thats as leaky as this with potentially sensitive data.

I guess I have the "wrong" kind of friends, where one of us will just pick up the bill and someone else will pay the next time. And regardless, it's still not worth the risk of using a third-party app. Hell, I avoid PayPal like the plague, let alone RandomService #984582.

Fortunately for you, Venmo isn't just RandomService #984582, since it's owned by PayPal.

Knowing that fact makes me less likely (can you get lower than 0 probability?) to use it. PayPal is high on my "nope" list.
-
@onyx Because the payments industry suffers from severe regulatory capture, as a result my options for sending money are limited (banks, PayPal, and credit cards, all of which suck). As a result I'm willing to take the bad with the good (if there's actually some good).

Venmo's owned by PayPal. So welcome to hell.

It occurs to me that the reason people go for this is that they don't make the connection between "oh, I can see what my friends (and enemies) are spending money on" and "oh, my friends (and enemies) can see what I'm spending money on".
Kinda inspires unfavourable comparisons between their intelligence and, say, planks of wood.

I was going more for the, "Now we no longer have to perform illegal and unconstitutional acts in order to gain completely transparent insight into our subjects lives...they are doing it for us now Approved"
-
@codejunkie "But that doesn't mean we'll stop with the illegal and unconstitutional bits, of course."

This is especially amusing given that I hear said service is frequently used by "Instagram models".

I'm told the best way to do this is to look for dating site profiles where the person is in skimpy clothing and/or in suggestive poses that display assets. Once there, look for key phrases like "not looking for hookups" as well as links to their Instagram consisting of more pictures of a similar nature. Following this trail, you may eventually come across venmo info.

That seems like a lot of work just for sex.
I am saying that as a married man with two kids. I am no stranger to sex requiring effort.

It's a young-person thing. Keeps you from pissing off the waiters if you want to split the bill too.

With my friends one person pays the bill, others send him transfers directly via their bank app. Takes like 10 seconds tops.

@mrl That's more of a Midwest thing. Over here on the coast we deal in avocado skins. Same concept.

Unlike American money, Monopoly money at least comes in different colours so you can tell at a glance which is which.

Well, young people tend to invent new ways to be obnoxious so, I guess that fits. :D
As far as not pissing off the waiters, I usually just leave a tip on top if the service was good. If not, well. They can be pissed off then.

Perhaps I only eat at insufficiently snooty restaurants, but in my recent experience, one simply tells the server, we want N checks, with person 1 on one check, people 2 and 3 on another, ... and people M-1 and M on check N, and he/she puts that into the POS terminal, and it spits out N checks with the correct amounts on each one with very little effort by the server, and each person/couple/whatever pays their own check with their preferred payment method.

I think uses moose pelts (large bills) or beaver pelts (small bills)
-
@el_heffe I'm sure there must be a joke about a møøse pelt and your sister's beaver in there somewhere, but I don't think I want to find it.

We just use an app to track balances. Whoever owes the others the most money pays the next restaurant visit.
Much easier and you don't have to wire money at all.

Last time I looked, the US has at least four(1) coasts. Which one?
(1) Contiguous east, Contiguous west, Alaska, Hawaii(2). "Contiguous east" includes the Gulf coast of Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas.
(2) Arguably one per island.

The restaurants I go to with colleagues in all allow you to pay for your share separately.
