Status: Another day, another idiot who bothers us all with basic Java questions because he wanted to try making Sponge plugins without learning Java first, and then refuses to actually go ahead and learn Java when we tell him to because he just wants to make one thing and that'd be too much work.

@pie_flavor You could say he wants to sponge off of your expertise.

Status: Since the lovely folks at Perforce have decided not to supply FreeBSD builds of their server anymore (because popularity contest loser I guess), I'm trying out the FreeBSD Linux emulation layer thing.
Wish me luck, the server version we're currently using is like, three years old and is probably ancient or something...

Oh my God, I think I'm done with graduate school (barring something terrible happening in the Registrar's office or something, knock on wood). Verdict: 6/10, probably would do again but would take less classes per semester and pay for less out of pocket because I'm not sure it's worth that.

Upgrade went well (apparently). Nothing is immediately broken from what I can tell. We'll see when everyone gets in tomorrow morning and actually starts using it....
Edit: additionally, this happened...
Hrmmmmmm.....

Forgot to mention: I studied for three days for my "final final". An hour before the class, I was walking around campus still reviewing flashcards (with ridiculously technical topics and the exact language from slides/legislation/regulations on them) and smoking my 12th-14th cigarettes of the day.
I walk into the class:
"This final consists of one essay question. It's an opinion question. You may use anything (or everything) you've learned in the class to back up your response. You have one hour."
Well, fuck me.

They're good at sorting out bullshitters from those who know their stuff.
I know at least one place used to mark those by having two subsidiary markers (TAs) mark each script separately, and splitting the difference providing it was no more than a small amount. Where there's a larger difference, it goes to the teacher for marking; their mark stands, and they provide feedback to the TAs on where they were going wrong (if they were). It's a reasonably fair system.
The usual trick is to remember to properly mention what you've learned; alluding to it is not good enough, you've got to provide evidence that you've actually learned it.

I think that this professor is at least going to be generous. I get the sense when he asks “How would you fix the problem?” he really wants to know/wants to hear something novel.
He also tends to turn around grades within two days (I attribute this to him being a retired Commander, and not being “institutionalized” into academia yet), so at least I’ll know soon.
Also in grad school you learn when your opinions are allowed to differ from those of the professor. He and I have had some “energetic” debates in class. I think it’ll be objective.

No, just more dumbassery.

I like professors like that. My English professor is perfectly centrist in class, and will refute both sides. And then I found his twitter, and holy shit I did not know a person could be so far left.

I just ate at McDonalds. It's impressive the level of automation and coordination they have there. At least 5 screens in the kitchen, plus those big ordering kiosks with a nice touchscreen interface.
Meanwhile all the other local food places do everything by hand like it's the middle ages, and when a McDonald's wants to move in they just complain about how "unfair" it is because they'll lose their jobs to it until the city council finds some excuse to ban them. I hate this country's mentality.

One would hope so. If you're excreting sugar, that's an indication of diabetes or, more rarely, other serious health problem.

@anonymous234 Did it have all the 4K TVs showing the menus, but they constantly switch between different menus and ads while you're trying to read it?
-
@mott555 Yeah the menus behind the counter were unreadable. That was the one bad part.
Also the family with two little girls screaming around, but I don't blame them for that.
-
@pie_flavor I mean, I glanced at your economy plugin's code and I thought it was good. So there's that. :D
-
@erufael Thank you :) I really wish I could come up with more ideas for plugins; I could probably write a bunch of stuff, but the things people keep calling for are way beyond my reach and the only other ideas I've heard from other people are these small things.
-
@pie_flavor I know the feeling. I author a multi-world inventory management plugin for Bukkit/Spigot, and whatever little small things for a small server a friend and I run.

Status: My brother just asked me to look at his car as the brakes "feel weird". Feel the brakes physically and the offside rear drum is hotter than a 2$ pistol. Try to drive it and I need half throttle to pull away. Its getting dark and I don't want to dismantle the drum so I take the wheel off and give it a few love taps with the dead-blow hammer to no effect. I think the piston is stuck/pure rust.
How the hell did you drive it like that. You're lucky you didn't have a brake fire.
So, I can drive it 150 miles tomorrow and get the garage to look at it sometime next week?
...
-
@erufael have you thought about porting it to Sponge?
-
@pie_flavor Once, a long time ago. The main thing is I don't use Sponge. Also I'd want to abstract parts of things to work on both, and I don't know where to even begin to think about doing that.

It was crashing quite quickly for no apparent reason, and since symbols weren't included I have NFC where in.
This may be due to the FreeBSD linux emulation thing being based on CentOS 6, I discovered that there was a CentOS 7 package that included more (and newer!) stuff. Upgraded that. Now it's been running solid for six hours!
Now to properly daemonize this just in case...

Interesting, let's try to recreate that...
WHARGABALRBAERGAELR What even?!?
I mean, I guess it's harmless in its own right, since it just asks the level to kill itself and it's already gone, but what's the deal here?

reading through the Unity manual. Learned one of those "omfg I never realized that but it makes total sense" things.
Y'know how every .net event always has
Object sender
in the signature? And you only occasionally use it to cast the object to whatever was expected. So why is it there?UnityEvents have similar limitations to standard delegates. That is, they hold references to the element that is the target and this stops the target being garbage collected.

Ok, but events in C# are called synchronously, and if you don't use the
sender
argument, it's fair game for the garbage collector.

is never the correct ending for a line.
