Yay, I has a new car. (I want to preserve that 'new car' smell forever. How do I do that?) Review from my family member: "You were remarkably assertive [I believe forum regulars know I'm not particularly aggressive or assertive] but not a cunt. Well, except when the finance guy asked what APR you were getting through your bank and you said, 'I don't see that that's any of your business.' That was kind of cunty."

"The State of California has determined that 'new car smell' causes cancer, birth defects, other reprorductive harm, and systemic racism." Well, probably.
Seriously, there are studies that report that the various chemicals that make up the odor are hazardous. Other studies find no adverse health effects, but if the same chemicals were found in the same quantities in workplace air, the building would be declared unsafe and everyone would be sent home until it was remedied.
That said, if you want to keep the odor, there are various companies that make air fresheners that mimic the odor. Googling "new car odor chemicals" will get you both links to studies and ads for air fresheners.
-
Status: Based on the smell that's suddenly started coming from the vents, either the rat has died or it had diarrhea.
Edit: aside: Apparently the security cameras have been disabled/destroyed, so footage ends at 3/26 (I stopped caring to overview it due to the Con).

Yes, I know; it was more of a rhetorical question. I didn't think there'd be any doubt that what I enjoy is the odor and not the chemicals involved with car manufacturing themselves. :P

@tsaukpaetra I had one without the cereal and wow, that was a bad decision.

Status: This laptop's SSD apparently self destructed when I tried formatting it. Is that a thing?
Granted, this PC was apparently ran over (it was recovered by my sister's husband who picked it off the road).
Prior to the self-destruct, this unit was obviously a field-unit, since it was encrypted with Symantec whatever, and really the only thing wrong was damaged tracpoint, destroyed screen, and perhaps the bottom cover might want to be replaced, but other than that the machine was working fine.
Were it not for the SSD, I think repairs would have been ~210, but the SSD jumps it to $670...
Darn...

I swear to dog
I've got a sudden surge of nostalgia for early-2000s FPS games, which all featured command console and a standarized set of cheats (god, giveall, noclip, etc.) Some developers of course tried to be "clever" as to not make cheating too easy but still very easy, so they renamed the god mode cheat to "dog".
In Alien Swarm, the
god
command makes the player invulnerable, but the player is an invisible object that cannot be interacted with that controls a marine, which is not given god mode.(If you want god mode in Alien Swarm, you can use
asw_god 1
)I think if you try to activate
noclip
in the Stanley Parable, the game literally yells at you. I may be misremembering it, but I think the game puts you in the time-out corner and asks you to reconsider your life choices.I can't check because I'm still working on the "don't play the game for 5 years" achievement.

Status: Pleasantly surprised that the latest build of the game runs at 60 FPS on average on my NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M laptop graphics card. If I look at the ground it's 120 FPS on average!
Of course, that's at the default 720p window. If I maximize it to 1080p it halfs.
Well, until it actually warms up and thermal throttles of course...

Status: Ever have one of those physical tics that you kind of become aware of by accident and then it suddenly starts annoying the hell out of you because you notice you're doing it all the freaking time? For me, it's my hand positioning when I'm talking to someone... normally, I'm a pretty severe hand talker (you don't want to be sitting next to me at the dinner table when steak is served...), but when I'm standing and talking "up the ladder" (or to an end user / product owner) in a business setting, I have the most annoying habit wherein my hands start fidgeting with the pocket buttons on my back pockets. Or if I manage to catch myself doing that and stop it, then they wind up fidgeting with my keys & any change or receipts in my front pockets.
Gah! Why can't you just sit there out of the way and not draw attention to yourselves, hands!

@tsaukpaetra It was closed down for 3 years due to flood damage, since it's inside the dikes and touching the Missouri River. It finally opened last year. So this fire will probably shut it down for a while again.
Which may be a good thing, actually. I'm starting to get too old for this off-road motorcycling thing. Crashing used to be funny. Now it just hurts.

Got to work at 7AM. Had an after school meeting with the architects for a planned new science wing. Then had a department dinner. Left there after 8pm.
I'm reminded why I don't eat at real restaurants often--too much waiting for the food.

I've never liked it much, but most of the alternatives to it suck too. Everyone thinks “issue management can't be that hard” but somehow it seems to end up sucking anyway. :(

I'd prefer having a five year old with a clipboard around me to having to deal with JIRA.

Perhaps spring is here. The snow is finally all melted and it's above freezing. Time to get the motorcycle out!
And then ten minutes later I nearly get killed by a dump truck that switched into my lane...

Me too, although I must admit that searching with arbitrary WHERE clauses is quite neat. But I only use it because there's no "issues in current sprint" view.

Check your VM's settings and see what the network interface type is set to.
Try changing it, and see if that fixes it.

If it's just a one-time thing, I often just RDP into the VM (with sharing stuff turned on in the RDP interface).

Yep, that's what I ended up doing after contemplating Wiresharking it and realising I really didn't have the time to fart around trying to troubleshoot SMB, even if that might have been a bit fun.

Hyper-V doesn't seem to have many options for this. The 'Network Adapter' device isn't seen by XP and the 'Legacy Network Adapter' just has virtual switch and VLAN options.

The other thing is to install the VM-host's tools into the VM. I know at least VMware would install drivers so you could easily map (thru the hosts options) local drives into the VM (shows up as a network drive). I'm pretty sure Hyper-V has them too (I just haven't bothered). Never used any of the other hosts.
-
@dcon
Yeah, the ultimate problem is that versions of Windows prior to Windows 10 aren’t supported as guests on Windows 10 and thus don’t have Hyper-V Integration drivers. So the RDP solution isn’t the fastest solution, it’s basically the only solution (and you don’t get clipboard sharing at all).

@cursorkeys Based on this...

it sounds like "Internal Virtual Network" is going to be your best option.
Unless, of course, the integration tools allow you to share the drive directly -- that might be simpler.

Status: Tracing a bug, where if player 1 is in a rideable zone (i.e. an area that moves itself and the player) and player 2 joins and so happens to spawn into that same zone, player 1's client will crash.
Additionally, once they re-join, it is possible to desync the visuals of player 2 such that their client believes they are still in the rideable, but nobody else does. Which is super fun, when the rideable is supposed to be stationary but player 2 thinks it's not, so they start moving around (visually), but aren't actually, and.... WTF is happening?!?!?1?
