GOD DAMMIT do I hate it when web pages disappear.
Like, it's understandable (still bad, but understandable) if there's a major restructuring of a website (like changing the software) and they don't bother adding rules for the old paths, or when a page disappears after 5 years.
But when you click on an URL that's clearly just a static file like
/folder/folder/document_name.html
, that you know was there just 2 months ago, on a big website that shouldn't have any hosting problems, and you get a "404 page not found" message, that's just bullshit. Who the fuck decided to just delete some files from the server? Did they really need that extra 100KB of space that badly?

I'll have to try this out. Looks pretty cool, may be able to consolidate some of my lab together. https://www.kali.org/news/kali-linux-in-the-windows-app-store/

I ended up installing "TaskBlocker" to keep "Windows10UpdaterAssistantMotherFucker.exe" from running. Ever.
Also, I set C:\Windows10Upgrade to "read only" and took away "write" permission from all users.

PowerShell is great if you want commonly-used commands like

that all have major implementation differences from what you expect.

@ben_lubar How about
protected
then. Coming from a C# background, for example, you wouldn't expect it to also be package-access, but it is.

Not specifying an access modifier in C# means "private" in this case, but "package-access" in Java. Adding "protected" just allows subclasses to access it as well. In C#, you can also do "protected internal" for the union of "protected" and "internal".
-
@ben_lubar You are coming up with an explanation that is technically valid, but not one that is actually sensible.

@pie_flavor fucking hell, why is this all so hard?
Not anything related to writing code, just getting the damn dependencies set up.
I'm usingdiesel
for the database and MySQL for development because it's simple. To set up tables, I actually need to installdiesel_cli
(not complaining, it has a nice schema up/downgrade system). And installing it gives me an error that it can't find themysqlclient
static library. OK, I guess. I thought installing MySQL should add that toPATH
, but guess not. I add it to the path. Same error. OK, is it something I have to fix in Cargo? I tell Cargo to use the proper-l
and-L
arguments to find it. Same error. I take a closer look and it's not actually erroring ondiesel_cli
directly, but rather onmysqlclient-sys
. Thank goodness everything has a GitHub in Rust land. The readme says that I need to havepkg-config
ormysql_config
able to find the lib. Well, that's not going to work, because this is a Windows machine! I fuck around with various settings in Cargo to try to get it to work, to no avail. Eventually just to see if there's anything else I can do I look atmysqlclient-sys
'sbuild.rs
- oh, hello, it can also check for aMYSQLCLIENT_LIB_DIR
environment variable! It'd have been nice if you could have mentioned that in the readme at all! Christ. I set that, and FINALLY it installs. Hooray! Now all that's left is to adddiesel
toCargo.toml
and rebuild. Same FUCKING error. I set the environment variable again. Nope. I make my own build.rs and tell it where to find the lib. Nope. God fucking dammit. Option 3: Whatever 'Vcpkg' is, it's something to do with C++ which I hope to never touch but I just don't care at this point anymore. Install, set up, run, frobnicate, etc. And installlibmysql
. And wait. And wait. And wait. And notice that each of the 88 packages it's compiling take 2-4 minutes to compile. FACK.
I'm just going to leave this open overnight, and hope it's compiled in the morning. What a clusterfuck. Perhaps tomorrow I might even write some code.

are you saying there are worse things than Bourne shell?
csh
is a bit better than the originalsh
(which nobody actually uses any more, BTW) for interactive use, since it was the first shell to introduce what is now Unix standard job control. It's not better than any of the multitude of children ofsh
(notablybash
,ksh
, and their descendants), is reputedly an utter PITA to script, and it isn't better than its direct largely-compatible descendent, tcsh
. (I've never usedtcsh
.)To set
csh
as a default shell is to say “fuck you!!!” to your users. (If it included “pay me” as the next sentence that'd be more understandable, butcsh
is just unnecessarily miserable for a system created in the past 30 years.)

@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:

If you knew what you were doing, you wouldn't be attempting to write forum software! But to be fair, the state of JS libraries I've seen makes me think that knowing what you are doing is very much not a requirement to get involved there. The average hawaiian pizza could be a JS developer and push up the mean skill of JS developers fractionally in the process…
-
@dkf what did that poor pizza do that you'd condemn it to the life of a JS developer?

though. And anyone using linux now is extremely unlikely to be using a real bourne shell. It's probably
bash
insh

. Probably evendash
is probably better for interactive use than realsh
, and that's designed primarily to run shell scripts.

Yes, and that's good because that's exactly what I want. I've yet to see a good YT video that starts with begging for subscribes. I also never watch videos between 10 and 11 minutes long from unknown channels.

Since they are sitting next to each other, one of the measures to prevent cheating is a somewhat-unique checksum based on their names which changes all the tasks' values by +/- 20%
Will be fun to see how many I'm catching with this.
