@rhywden that sounds like a wonderful idea! I wonder if they added a reinsert command to it though. Most devices cache the FAT and therefore don't recognize modifications to the card unless you eject and replace the card...
It's probably a proper SMB protocol device when you access it over wi-fi.
He must have a newer version than mine. Mine was a (really simple) HTTP service.
Even if it's HTTP, it should refresh just fine without any sort of "reinsert" command. The main thing is that your computer doesn't have to know or care that the data is stored on a FAT device.
I was speaking more from the perspective of the device it's plugged into (a 3d printer). Typically speaking, most devices don't expect their drives to be modified live underneath them.
When this happens it's... not pretty. BTDT.
Oh. Yeah, that would probably be a big no-go. The wi-fi side should probably just not allow any modifications to the files themselves.
However, you could read the card's contents just fine. And most of the time, the device will have a built-in function to delete files off the memory card that is plugged in -- that should work just fine, too.
Yeah, IIRC you can read at will, but as soon as you POST a write, it flips the virtual "This is Read-Only" bit (on the device-facing side) until the card reboots. Or something like that.
I used to have the card in my CPAP machine, but since it very explicitly requires the FAT to be in a specific order (no stray files anywhere) I always had to be careful of the order of operations I used to configure the card otherwise it would just wipe it (and the config, which includes such things as WiFi password and SSID, natch) before trying to use it again.

@benjamin-hall For a good leather belt you should be paying that. It will last you 100s longer than anything else.
I ride several bikes with a saddle of good leather. I rather pay for quality:
Disclaimer I don't use this particular saddle but it is close.
And no thr cheap crap doesn't do the job.

Working from home because of the threat of weather. The weather itself hasn't been too bad, however...
About 2 hours ago one of the side-trunks of a small tree outside decided it wasn't having any more of this "life" shit and split off. It's still somewhat connected, but is mostly laying on the fence. It's not big enough to hurt the house, really, but the only thing I have is a hand-held reciprocating saw which isn't quite enough to get through the part still connected.
However, when I went to my basement to see if there happened to be an axe or something left from my parents, I also discovered that apparently my sewer line has decided to start backing up into the basement. This has happened before because apparently the actual outflow pipe that goes through the foundation is super-small. Last time it was because I used thick toilet paper (I think it was Charmin Ultra or something that was like 4-ply). That was a couple years ago.
Oh, and someone can't come look at THAT until 8:30 tomorrow morning, meaning I can't do dishes, or really use the bathroom, or shower, until after they (hopefully) resolve that.
Seems someone saved on installing a backflow stopper. When a similar thing happened in my parents' street it turned out that my father was seemingly the only one who had this installed when we built our house.

I wanna promote it again, as it is someone I know 3rd hand that I know does great albums. This shit is too smooth.
-
@rhywden Dunno, I'm pretty sure this house was originally built in the 1920s, so that may not have even been a thing then. It's probably the damn outflow pipe in the foundation got some paper snagged on it at some point or something, then other stuff built up on that, and now it's probably the consistency of concrete.
Needless to say, my night is not going to go well. I'm going to try and avoid eating anything so as not to trigger much in bodily outflow procedures, and I'm going to try and subject myself to more Dark Souls, so my ability to speak may be reduced to naught but swearing and gnashing of teeth by the time I go to bed.

Status: Well, something just borked. My computer just started to refuse to connect to anything (despite saying 'connected to internet'), and it wasn't 'couldn't find DNS server' but 'couldn't find IP address'. Even when connecting to an xfinitywifi node. I set the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 instead of 'default' and that fixed it, but now I can't access any SJSU page at all, despite DNS resolving correctly.
Edit: And now I've switched back to the default DNS servers, and now the SJSU pages work fine.
-
@pie_flavor Did you try turning it off and on again ?
-
@timebandit Yes. First the network adapter, then the computer, and then the computer again but this time shutting down by holding the power button. What in the blue fuck can't be fixed with those but can be fixed by setting and unsetting the DNS?

@tsaukpaetra Android? You can, it's just a few menus deep.
Open Discord, drag open the left-hand nav menu, tap the gear for personal settings. Tap "Notifications", then "Tweak Notification Settings". In there, you can tap on the individual types of notifications (tap the name, not on their toggle) and there should be an option for "Sound" where you can change the tone.

I just noted there are multiple options. I also noted it's unnecessary to have multiple options.
to "kids will just watch the same thing over and over"
As a rebuttal to your statement that a kid might get bored with just one channel.
and then to "get stuff on Internet".
As in, "get your chosen single fixed-schedule kids TV program on the internet".

Statusbolded text****
I don't understand people who work with broken tools.
Since there's currently a large swaths of fully-kitted desks without people to sit at them, I decided to upgrade my own workstation a bit. My main monitor's been bugging me lately. It isn't as sharp as it could be, and also it runs 20 degrees F hotter than my other monitor. (Thank you new phone!)
Go around the office looking at the model numbers of unused monitors. Ooo, this one from the "didn't do backups in production" dev is a nice Dell, LED, IPS panel, and is 1" bigger. Snag it, set it up and-- something just doesn't seem right. The bottom left quadrant just looks off. And the more I look at the monitor, the more obvious it becomes. It's like someone put a magnet on a CRT, but slightly more subtle.
Is it just my eyes? Open up a full-screen Notepad (all white) and look, no there is DEFINITELY something there. Look at the onscreen menu-- factory reset. Still there. There a "LED Conditioning" option, I'll try that. The monitor starts to cycle through the colors-- black, white, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta-- whoa wait a fucking second.
The entire right side of the screen, in magenta, is just flickering and has running lines. Yeah, that would be what's causing the weird rainbow and flickering. And thinking back on it, whenever I went to that dev's desk (which was a lot, because learning how to do your job is HARD) his monitor DID look a bit off.
Has this monitor ALWAYS been like this? How the fuck did he work with it?!? It's this constant, flickering, mis-colored OFFNESS that'd always be right in your face, or in the corner of your eye (making the flicker worse). This is driving me batty just looking at it for a few minutes. Why did he never tell the IT guy "hey my monitor's weird, can you look at it"? There's a ton of extra monitors in the office, and even if there wasn't the company owner would buy another one without a second thought.
How the hell do people do this? How do they work with broken tools? Do they just not notice? Just not care? Is this lack of attention to detail and lack of-- professionalism? Professional pride? Whatever?-- is this one of the dividing lines between code-monkey and software engineer?

Status: Just discovered one of our Meraki MR32s has been “helping” by falling into WDS mesh mode because it has a flaky LAN port connection, which is an automatic and apparently inconfigurable setting for these radios.
Helping is in scare quotes because we didn’t make any effort to lay these access points out with mesh in mind, because WDS is the original , so this AP has a very dodgy uplink and runs like shit when it’s in WDS mode.

Well, Bayerische Motoren Werke was the one I was thinking of as a "Bavarian brand of car." It is rather explicitly Bavarian; I didn't know Mercedes is built in Bavaria. People (or at least Americans) who drive BMWs tend to be both bad drivers and raging Arschlöcher in a way that doesn't apply to Mercedes drivers, at least not the "bad drivers" part.

Yeah, that's on the agenda for tonight.
She means well, but I've never known anybody to faff about so much instead of actually doing anything. My wife asked her to hoover the floor. She started talking about her preferred brand of vacuum cleaner. My wife politely pointed out that what we have works and could she please use it, and she started on about something else. If you ask her to do something that has a time based element to it, odds are she'll promise to do it as soon as she's had a cigarette, spend 20 minutes outside smoking and talking on the phone, then come in having completely forgotten what she was asked to do

@tsaukpaetra Not sure what version you're on.
-
There is this device, that anything I code that it doesn't like it just resets the terminal. It's a good thing, it fails fast. Then I was looking the API to reset the device, and noticed it takes a string parameter. So I think, what are you going to do if I just pass garbage or NULL to this parameter, reset the device? huh? I passed a wrong string, and it just didn't reset.
