I am not sure why precisely it is necessary for WTDWTF to have such a tight relationship with the maintainer of their forum software.
I think it's largely because:
a.) we have a relatively large forum with scaling demands larger than most,
b.) we have bored developers who do fun things like create bots -- that then run into edge cases unanticipated when designing to human requirements,
c.) we have smart developers who can identify security vulnerabilities that others might miss (this is a big one),
d.) we have users who just want their fucking software to work the way you want it.Call it picky or selfish if you want, but a lot of us deal with enough shitty software in our day jobs that if we're going to hang out somewhere in our "off-hours", we want to be able to customize that space the way we want and we want to have input on how it works. There's been honest talk here about bringing up a new forum platform from scratch but that's a bit too big of an endeavor for volunteers, so we've made it a collaborative effort with an open-source project instead.

Hmm, I should take another stab at @PythonBot sometime. I'm sure TDWTF would find really interesting ways to abuse it. It was a bot that took any posts that mentioned him and executed them as Python scripts and then replied with the output, but I never got sandboxing/security/script timeout stuff to really work right.

Apropos of nothing, the SomethingAwful forums are some of the speediest I've ever seen. Even with 10+ years of archives, and millions of posts, and thousands of concurrently active users:
Page loads in < 0.5 second:
Same performance for navigating, paging (fuck your 'toxic hellstew of paging' bullshit), etc.
From what I understand, it's vBulletin with a bunch of customized code, on a Cloudflare.
e: also, when I write a message and hit POST, it's posted and back to the thread in < 1 second.
That's about as fast as I've experienced with Discourse.

Hey Lorne, here's what I get when I hard reload this page:

@pie_flavor did you put like 200 kilobytes of custom CSS in the profile field?
-
@ben_lubar I guess you couldn't check that, since if you do it clears the field. But no. I just have the Lounge background blocker and the thing that gets rid of the title bar on mobile.
-
@pie_flavor what was your page size set to on Discourse?
-
@ben_lubar Discourse doesn't have pages. If you're asking about my page size here, it's 50.
Edit: Interesting. I clicked Submit and it took me back to page 2.

-
@ben_lubar I didn't know Discourse had pages. I've only ever used infiniscroll. Wish NodeBB had infiniscroll that fucking worked at all, but it doesn't.
-
@ben_lubar Oh. Shit, my bad. Meant 25.

@boomzilla I suspect that violent agreement is at work here, but I could be wrong.
Jeff was hanging out here, so he got the bug reports raw, unfiltered, and straight from the horse's mouth, as it were.
Not towards the end.
In the end, it doesn't even matter.

It doesn't, which made it even more confusing when Jeff got mad at us for increasing the page size.

Yes it does. They're just not normal pages...

Ugh, give it a rest already, this got old after ten posts. Can we just "fight about discourse here", as the topic suggests? That's much more fun.
Just reading about "infiniscroll" makes me want to channel my inner blakey, but calling @pie_flavor a discodev 6 brazillion times is garage material.

I want someone to make a forum software that uses normal pages but supports "infiniscroll" in the sense that you can keep scrolling in the negative space on all four sides of the page indefinitely.

Here it only happens when, well you read it.

Pointing out that you're a Discodev isn't garage material. Bike shed material, maybe.
