Hey all, got linked to this topic, though it seems I missed much of the discussion.
In any case, sociopathic name calling aside, I don't think this community is particularly toxic at all. For the vast majority of my interactions here, the prevailing truth has been that you get treated the same way you treat others. Hell, I even have a begrudging respect for @blakeyrat , simply because his rants come from an honest desire to improve the software, though the manner in which this is communicated is ... Abrupt.
I can't even make the excuse that you guys like me because I'm fresh meat, or because I'm a NodeBB dev. That novelty would've worn off a long time ago...
Whatever the history is behind this community switching to NodeBB, I'm happy you guys are on board.
For my mental sanity, however, I can't take more than 2 or 3 other TDWTFs

Yeah, PMs in Discourse are actually just a special kind of topic, and somewhat predictably discoverable if you have the right permissions.

To be fair, so were chats in NodeBB until we complained.
And then that was fixed and put into production within a single digit number of hours of it being reported.
-
Hey, chats aren't topics. They might suck, but we didn't shove that particular square peg into that round hole.

Found the culprit.
I said one positive thing: My 1.7 GHz single-core laptops did technically connect to discourse. I believe I posted screenshots even, if you ask nicely I might find them...
I found one of the posts mentioning it:
https://what.thedailywtf.com/post/834495
I can't seem to find where I posted screenshots though...

So by thinking software which doesn't suck is better than software which sucks at a level below moderately and above slightly, I must therefore be a developer of the first software?
-

And yet he could have just asked nicely. Or even not nicely. But ask.

I don't know why this post of yours got downvoted.
Sounds like a reasonable complaint against a big jump into conclusions. Not that I'm agreeing NodeBB is worse than Discourse.
I don't think there is a definite ordering of quality between them.

So basically, confirming what people have said: Jeff responds poorly to criticism and WTDWTF was a never-ending stream of it. Nevermind the fact that we did actually find and report a lot of bugs, he just couldn't take the constant criticism after a while.

Yeah, okay. You get it.

@pie_flavor
And yet remains faster than discourse and with less gerbil abuse

The flaw in your defence is thinking that Discourse is software

@anotherusername said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

That's the heart of douchewood's problem right there. He equates bugs with criticism, and equates criticism with personal attacks.
Therefore any bug report is a personal attack on him.
So he responds to bug reports in the same way one respond to personal attacks. Well, in the same way an egotistical douche respond to personal attacks... temper tantrums, name calling, memes and taking his ball home.
If he's that emotionally invested in his project, fine, whatever. But then you cannot CANNOT play a public, customer-facing, user-interacting role.
(You also shouldn't manage from that perspective either, but that's a kettle of monkeys for him and his felatio team to deal with)
-
Edit for double post: goddamn it NodeBb! Worse time to bug out there.
I created that post. mobile ff latest. Presumably got a chat message while typing. I was also replying to a post in the expanded "replies" widget. After posting it looked like it posted, but want there. No other nav worked. Hit refresh, still not there. Opened composer on it's own. I hit POST again. Now double post. Whatever
-
@anotherusername You missed the part where he literally said something close to that in the first post. He thanked you guys for the quality bug reports which seriously improved Discourse, but at the end just couldn't handle the toxicity. Remember, not all developers enjoy toxicity, but since all the ones here do, it's easy to forget that.
-
@polygeekery I think that that has more to do with the fact that I led with some praise for Discourse, because it deserves it, while I'll bet you guys did not say one positive thing about it the whole damn time you used it.
-
@luhmann If the gerbil abuse thing is a meme, then I'm ing, but my complaint has always been that it's slower than Discourse.
-
@lorne-kates Yes, because it's obviously hardware.

When we adopted it Discourse was total shit. Seriously. It was pre-Alpha and being called Beta. Then, one day, out of the blue they started calling it 1.0 and it was still a rough beta.
Also, we did say good things about it. I could even dig up some posts where we did so.

You know they say about assumptions: they make an ASS out of U. (Because you're a douche disco dev)

@pie_flavor hmmmm, I wonder how @julianlam rates us on the interactions he has had with us?
We tend to respond in kind.
Julian and nodebb get a lot of criticism here too

I tried searching for it, luckily NodeBB has a "Topics started by user" filter for this!

As I was being a dumbass using the search feature to try doing this, I also found these gems:

Paging @pie_flavor, you want to see how Atwood addresses people on his own forums? His own devs no less?
Sam should have told him to go get fucked for being so rude.
Atwood is a dick.
-
Also, Atwood told us that any long-running topics were and should not be allowed to occur. Our likes thread killed Discourse so badly that we had to blackhole it until we moved to NodeBB.
Funny thing though, the more masculine forums I have been involved with (guns and cars) usually have some long-running topics with many thousands of posts (usually attractive women in pictures with the forum topic). All of them.
IIRC Atwood told us that no topic should ever get to 1K posts. Ever. They should be broken up. Closed. Not a bug. Won't fix.
-
@polygeekery I'm missing what part of that is rude. Everything he said was correct.
-
@pie_flavor your reply was a waste of time, since it wasn't addressed at what I said.
-
@pie_flavor go here, read, comprehend, learn:

Including numerous times he deleted posts that he considered inappropriate. Numerous times he locked topics that never should have been locked. Etc.
He is lying through his teeth.
The reading of people's PMs and liking posts within them was probably the creepiest thing though. I would like to know @pie_flavor's opinion on that. Whether he is still an Atwood sycophant after knowing that.

Can allí this discourse / atwood posts be jeffed somewhere else ?
dev/null or they garage.is fine by me...

"Hello fellow not-Discodevs" said the obvious Discodev.
-
The red boob conundrum is still being bounced around internally... We also don't call it a red boob, I think our designer (who happens to be of the fairer sex) probably wouldn't appreciate it.
For now we added minimize to the chat and stopped the taskbar from showing up on chats and composers.
