Unsecured MongoDB strikes again
[Edit: Dammit, , why did you the post twice when I clicked quote once?]
One flaw is that the default settings of a MongoDB database would allow anyone with an internet connection to browse the databases, download them, or even worst case scenario to even delete the data stored on them.
I dunno; having random hacker delete the database of an unscrupulous and careless data miner sounds more like a best-case scenario to me.
-
I think there's some sort of GPO policy at work to keep the "suggested sites" link in IE, even if you turn it off and delete it.
If you try to turn it off and delete it, it re adds it. Then it adds another one. And another one. I haven't deleted them in a while, so the right hand side of my bookmark bar looks like this
Update:
I think I'm going to leave them and see how high it can get

Why is there a cancel button if it doesn't do anything? Also, rollback is a thing TI.

Shouldn't cancelling an installation leave your installation in a non-existent state?

No shit, they can request it. They request things all the time. I could request that you give me a thousand dollars. Doesn't mean it's going to happen. TFA goes on to say that if the company refuses, then they go and get a court order. What an articleworthy topic.

What exactly is an "encryption backdoor" and why does the US government want them?
"I put a secret backdoor into my mathematical algorithm so it would be easier for attackers to break into secure systems" doesn't exactly sound like a good thing to do.

Shouldn't cancelling an installation leave your installation in a non-existent state?
Depends how it (an MSI) was authored. If done right, it should roll back to the state before installation started - if an upgrade, then the old version is back. If new, then yes, non-existent.
-
Depends how it (an MSI) was authored.
An author is a person; therefore, it is safe to conclude it was authored wrongly.

That installer definitely doesn't look like Windows Installer, hence no MSI and lack of rollback capabilities.

I only barely noticed this, but what precisely is appearing and disappearing?
ShareX fucks up the mouse cursor, but the line is appearing when I mouse over the upvote and disappearing when I move the mouse off of it.
-
@pie_flavor said in WTF Bites:

The button or the count? (The video doesn't want to play for me.) Mousing over the count shows who upvoted, but the hit-box is a bit wonky, and it can be difficult to get it to display long enough to read it.
-
@hardwaregeek There's a tiny gray horizontal line that appears about a third of the way up the button when it's moused over, and disappears when you mouse off.

Hmm, no clue.
Actually, it seems to disappear when I switch back to the default skin. Normally I use Paper.

@pie_flavor Ah, well that explains why I can't repro.

Remember, if there's a backdoor in your computer security then that backdoor can easily let in both your own government and many many others. After all, they're all “the government” and Honest Ivan swears blind that this is so.

I didn't say it was a good thing to do. Note that I FTF a bunch of 3-letter agencies, not FTFM.

WhoTF knows? The installer says "installing" not "updating".

I can't even fucking reproduce this. It just happens when I'm not paying attention. Fuck you, Hangouts.
I've got an even better one. A couple of times, I've had the cursor show up and get stuck. Never been able to reproduce it, and it's hard to even figure out which process owns it (Explorer, I think) so that I could kill it and get rid of the extra floating cursor.
Another one! And I still haven't a clue what owned this one either!

In the fridge at work is a container of so-called "rice milk" (according to the ingredients, water with rice in it, presumably finely powdered and mixed to a milk-like consistency but it's not as if I've tried opening it to verify this). No, that's not the WTF, or at least not much of one.
The WTF is that the package proudly proclaims: "Organic!"
Yeah... just like literally every other milk-substitute in existence and, of course, milk itself.
TRWTF is that this probably does increase their sales....
-
@scarlet_manuka said in WTF Bites:

Yeah... just like literally every other milk-substitute in existence and, of course, milk itself. It's the marketing version of Organic, not the chemical version (because chemicals are bad). Organic means it's been farmed in an unsustainable, inefficient way, using only the pesticides approved by the Soil Association, most of which are based on dung from non organic livestock
-
@jaloopa Presumably, it only even means that if there's some regulation saying that "organic" claims have to meet certain criteria. Otherwise I assume it to mean "We market this brand to people who like to pay more for inferior products."
-
@jaloopa They use only the best organic water.

@zecc I bet you think that's a joke don't you

@zecc I once tried inorganic food and it was very salty.

Windows is giving me a . Now, I got a new screen, keyboard and mouse at work to connect my laptop to while I'm at my desk. The way I expect it to work: being able to connect the laptop and then close the lid and the laptop keeps running. Linux Mint does this. macOS does this. Windows sets the laptop into sleep mode. I'm just sighing deeply and wondering if sharing office with my hated-by-Windows colleague is starting to rub off on me.
-
@atazhaia Change the power mode settings for "power buttons and lid" => "lid close action" => "do nothing". (That you only need to do once).
After that, press Windows+P and choose "Project to second screen only". Close lid.
-
@atazhaia The defaults may be brain-dead (I am pretty sure they indeed are), but Windows has the same settings as Linux (most importantly different settings with and without power supply), so it's mainly a matter of fixing them.
-
@atazhaia huh, my sister's laptop works the way you want/expect no problem as long as a second screen is connected. Not sure if it's drivers or power settings.
-
Not sure if it's drivers or power settings
No, it's clearly Windows. There's no other option
-
@bulb But on Mint it Just Works without me needing to change the settings. Both battery and power cord is set to go into sleep mode when I close the lid, which is also what I want it to do when I'm not at my desk. However, in Mint, if it detects that I have an external monitor and keyboard connected it automagically assumes that I indeed want to work using the external monitor and keyboard when I close the lid and wont go into sleep mode, just switching the external monitor to be the primary.
