Basically, bench racing on the internet is populated exclusively by morons.
Yep. They irritate me only slightly more than the "Mexico" crowd. Fortunately, 95% of the people who actually race at the dragstrip are cool as shit. It warms my heart to see so many people from different walks of life unite for a common goal.
Presuming that the warranty issue in my brand-new $4800 rearend kit (differential bearing noise, mechanic thinks it was because the kit sat on a shelf for years) is fixed tomorrow, I'll actually be able to make it to Friday Night Test and Tune for the first time this season.

Minimum.
Also, the more complicated the project, the more likely the store will be out (or closed like above) of a critical item.

@tsaukpaetra Sounds better than my dream, at least you had Seven-of-Nine. I dreamt about sorting items in a queue.

@hardwaregeek
I recommend stepping out of the queue and finding a good, quiet desk to work at before sorting items. Less British, perhaps, but vastly more effective.

Status: Finally made some headway on the procedure I've been digging at since last week. The dev data set is showing 60-75% performance improvements, and the procedure is (in my estimation, at least) a lot more maintainable since the data validations are all inline in one fairly simple query, rather than an 8 layer deep subquery nesting doll (that had roughly 15 subqueries and 25 joins in total).
Now, to hope this thing doesn't crap out in Stage... oh, wait, the job doesn't run regularly in Stage either, how tf am I gonna test this pre-prod

Status: Work ended three hours ago and there is bits of printer everywhere. One of our shop-floor lasers decided the network jack would become intermittent. Not a problem, take it apart and re-solder the cold joint on the board.
After half an hour of fighting stupid plastic clips I have it apart and re-solder it, some of the pins did look dodgy.Power it up and still intermittent, balls. Finally look in the end and all the leaf contacts are smashed into a ball, no idea how it even worked partially. Waste half an hour trying to straighten them with loupe and SMT tweezers and then give up.
Next great idea, un-solder the broken connector and fit a new one! Except it's a multilayer board and I have to mostly destroy what's left of the connector to get it out without damaging the board.
Over to Google and find out that it's an integrated-magnetics connector not a simple one and the pinout looks unique to this one Taiwanese company that made the in the 90's. No supplier has even heard of it, let alone have stock.Latest great idea, solder the magnetics part of the broken connector back to the board and use hair-thin bodge-wire to connect a simple RJ45 connector to whats left, then epoxy a network cable into the mess.
Moral of the story: I should have just said 'moneys plz' to finance and bought a new one...

)Initial code:
//... Snip other stuff... // check for milliseconds if (*Next == TCHAR('.')) { Ptr = Next + 1; Millisecond = FCString::Strtoi(Ptr, &Next, 10); // should be no more than 3 digits if ((Next <= Ptr) || (Next > Ptr + 3)) { return false; } for (int32 Digits = Next - Ptr; Digits < 3; ++Digits) { Millisecond *= 10; } }
First attempt (waiting on compile to try it) code:
// check for milliseconds if (*Next == TCHAR('.')) { Ptr = Next + 1; Millisecond = FCString::Strtoi(Ptr, &Next, 10); // should be no more than 6 digits if ((Next <= Ptr) || (Next > Ptr + 6)) { return false; } for (int32 Digits = Next - Ptr; Digits != 3; Digits += Digits < 3 ? 1 : -1) { Millisecond *= Digits < 3 ? 10 : 0.1; } }
Edit: Did a dumb multiplying

I'm not, Epic Games is, and I'm not willing to introduce a whole new special class that won't be compatible with anything else UE4 expects just for the ability to have a date string with a few more digits than expected.
My code adjustment works just fine for what it needs to do.

Status: Well damn. Apparently the idiot manufacturers for the Infoblox-550 unit didn't count on a CMOS reset. By default, Console Redirection to COM1 is disabled. Which would be fine, except... THEY LEFT THE VGA PORT UNPOPULATED! I'm reasonably confident that the integrated graphics just isn't hooked up, and theoretically if I soldered on the correct header it might work, but that's hella effort...
Anyways, I'm left with a 1 Long, 1 short, stutter, 2 short POST beep code. If I press a key on the keyboard after that, the POST (apparently?) completes, but enters into some kind of beep-based menu (and no, there is no difference in tones, it's a series of ^G, ^G^G^G^G^G^G^G^G beeps FFS), and doesn't actually boot.
So I'm bowing my head and submitted Ticket #SM1710046324 to SuperMicro, hoping against hope they can provide some kind of menu map or something to enable Console on COM1 or at least invoke the "Just use the defaults and boot from HDD0" option.
Sigh....

STATUS: Booted into Windows on my work computer and immediatley regretted it. First, the HP support assistant got stuck using up 100% CPU until I gave it a poke, at which point Windows Malware Protection took over using up all CPU.
Also, the work planning tool looks very different on Windows compared to Linux despite using the same browser on both. Uglier in fact.
And why did MS complicate saving a fucking Word document in Word? What happened to Ctrl+S > optionally change folder from Documents in the file picker > type filename > enter and done? Now the stuck an ugly UI between Ctrl+S and the file picker that serves little actual purpose. Morons.Edit: Also, the Wifi icon shows it being disconnected despite it most definitely being not, based off my ability to be posting here.
Also, an aside for the 100% CPU usage. Yesterday, the Blizzard app was downloading patch data for the next Overwatch patch. So no install, just a download. This download apparently required maximizing the use of all 6 cores on my i7 Extreme Edition CPU, having all of them run at 98% for the entire download.

That's literally just an episode of Voyager. Your "dream" was the same as going to Netflix and watching that two-parter.
-
I think Blakey's right on this one.
-
@jazzyjosh Yeah I just refreshed my memory, it's Unimatrix Zero part I and II.
In part one, they find that there's a Borg "resistance group" that has created a virtual reality world inside the Borg hive-mind they can retreat to while asleep. They make contact with Seven because they have a plan for spreading access to Unimatrix Zero to the entire collective via some kind of virus? I can't remember.
In Part II, Seven gets captured by the Borg Queen and the Borg Queen explains (lies?) that Seven was allowed to be removed from the collective on purpose so that she would gain knowledge about how to better assimilate humans. Then tries to talk her into being an independent-minded Borg, which I guess is also what the Borg Queen is (and what they were trying to turn Picard into?)
Something like that.

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah, I believe the Queen's "explanation" for Picard was that he was supposed to originally be a male counterpart to her but resisted the assimilation process too much so they had to go further and just make him a Speaker.

IMHO, that's better than the reverse. Being unable to use the network even though it is (apparently) connected is most annoying.

Yesterday, McAfee wanted to update itself. (Yeah, I know, McAffe is in the first place, but corporate IT.) I let it. Network became unusable for something like two hours. I could intermittently connect to Exchange Server, occasionally to Skype for Business, and I got to see my NoMachine remote desktop once for about 30 seconds. When I finally decided to disable "Web Protection," suddenly the network started working. Amazing!
Also, my cubicle has 4 "RJ45" jacks in assorted colors, but none of them seem to have live Ethernet connections, so I'm stuck with WiFi in the office.

Sadly these are the one set (of the four) that will actually be read, so I have to try.
-
@anonymous234 So I could make my phone edgier?
One of the most common requests we hear from people who use Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 PCs is “we want our browser experience to move to our phones”. You spoke, we listened.
I got the crashtastic experience trying to open a website with broken ads using Chrome, Safari and Firefox on iOS recently. Can't wait to extend that experience to ALL websites!
Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android brings familiar features like your Favorites, Reading List, New Tab Page and Reading View across your PC and phone, so, no matter the device, your browsing goes with you. But what makes Microsoft Edge really stand out is the ability to continue on your PC, which enables you to immediately open the page you’re looking at right on your PC—or save it to work on later.
So it stands out by having the same features as Chrome and Firefox (and Safari) already have. Got it.
Also, the Microsoft Launcher looks like it has swapped the Back and App Drawer buttons, for maximum confusion.
-
@atazhaia I'm not entirely sure why they care so much about having a popular web browser.
My hypothesis is they simply want to support the HTML platform, so it can replace Android (the platform, not the OS). Since Windows Phone is a total failure, they'd rather have an open ecosystem than one controlled by Google.

@tsaukpaetra What the fuck does "Social VR" mean? I suppose it's multiplayer VR games where you can interact with other people. But why would VR multiplayer games be any more social than non-VR video games?
I hope no one believes people will put VR helmets on just to chat with their friends.

Those all use the Safari engine (as will Edge) so blame Apple.
-
@anonymous234 Which is one of the big s of iOS: All browsers must use the Safari rendering engine. And probably why you can't use addons in Firefox on iOS, which annoys me.
-
Finally decided to google why Chrome can't open any MSDN links.
Clearing them fixed the problem. Of course, now I have to log back in to everything...

I think it might be faulty RAM.
I did a full "factory reset" (it's a Cyanogenmod ROM). It seemed to work well. I installed a bunch of apps and that Microsoft launcher. Suddenly the default launcher, the Microsoft launcher and Google Play Services all crashed at the same time. The log said something about trying to free an invalid memory address. I've been using it for a few more minutes and just got a random reboot again. It's not looking good.

My phone crashes consistently when launching the My112 app.
Which is of course related to Android phones might crash when calling 911.
Which means right now I have no means of contacting emergency services with it.

That's one of our prime features at the moment (heck, any multiplayer VR game, actually), but we're focused on not really being a "game" (despite the apparent gamification aspects currently being built ). But more importantly, it's what you physically do with others that's the point.
It's still more expensive to fly over and hang out with my german "friends" than it is to hop on the internet and telepresence that way.
