Funny story--I have some friends who have an 8-month old (their first). The wife is the one who's talking about having another, and the husband's the one pushing back. Somehow the pain gets forgotten...
Sounds about right. Most people I know have had the same dynamic.

My big kids consider my littlest one birth control.

2 year olds are super cute so that you don't beat them. Natural selection at its finest.
Someone needs to do a study on when these 2 year olds officially stop being cute. There are a ton of nasty 2 year olds who don't get their asses kicked just because they're cute. Unfair on a few levels.

My daughter turned 5 last month. Based on my sample of 1 I think 4-5 is when they start seeming more like little people rather than bigger toddlers.

I noticed something similar with how my dog interacts with children. Under about 4 yo, she doesn't really like playing with them. She'll let them do anything to her, steal her toys, yank her ears or whatever, but she'll just stay there passively or walk away if she's annoyed. From 4-5 yo, she start running with them, fetching what they throw, sometimes even bringing them toys to play with (and begging for food, but that part is Labrador's DNA, not anything to do with children!).
I've put that to the predictability of children from that age: they start acting like real humans, not just the unstructured apparent randomness of puppies, so she feels she can actually do something with them.

Our two year old is in the depths of potty training right now. As a result he is fascinated by how others use the restroom. Anytime his brother uses the toilet he wants to go sit on his little potty, etc. So tonight I go in to the master bath to take a sabbatical and after sitting there for a moment I hear the master bedroom door open. Then I hear the doorknob to the master bath jiggle.
Goddamn it.
Lil' dude opens the door, comes in the bathroom, and just stands there and stares at me.
"Daddy is going potty, can I have a little privacy please?"
-stares-
"What's mommy doing? Why don't you go see?"
-stares-
"Come on man, this is the few moments of actual real peace and quiet that I get to myself each day, go play with your toys or something."
-stares-
"Goddamnit, you are just going to sit there and watch me while I take a shit aren't you?"
-shakes head-
"You realize this is fucking weird, don't you?"
-shakes head-No rest for the wicked, not even when they are dropping a deuce.

@polygeekery How are they to learn except by observation? This too shall pass.
So to speak.

@greybeard And after it passes, once more will he be able to pass.

My daughter used to like to come in and watch during my morning shower. On the plus side it meant she was always available to hand me my towel (until she started getting attitude and answering "no daddy" or pointing and saying "there towel". Little shit)
More fun is sneaking in while my wife is showering, holding the baby up at adult head height so he's peeking in on her and waiting for the scream

Are you trying to emotionally scar a child by making him see a parent naked? :/
-
@stillwater
Just the fact of who the kiddo's dad is has emotionally scarred the kiddo, everything else is just gravy
-
@stillwater said in Parenting advice - you're gonna get hit:

For God's sake, why would that "emotionally scar" a child. Their parent screaming about it may upset them, sure, but otherwise that shouldn't emotionally scar anyone.
-
@heterodox It depends very much on the parents' reaction. In the US, there's a strong tendency to view any nudity as inherently sexual; therefore, allowing one's children to see one nude under any circumstances whatsoever must be abuse. I still remember the first and only time I ever accidentally saw my mom nude, in the bathtub, not because of the nudity, but because of the cover up and hide, "Get out of here!" reaction.
Other parts of the world are not so uptight. It runs from casual nonchalance (e.g., European saunas) to normal everyday life (e.g., some "uncivilized" parts of the tropics).
This is an area in which I wish I could have raised my kids to be less uptight, but my ex wouldn't even consider it, and it wasn't a hill I was willing to die on.
-
@hardwaregeek said in Parenting advice - you're gonna get hit:

Right, that's exactly what I said.
The belief that seeing a naked body is going to "emotionally scar" someone is what causes disproportionately defensive reactions that do emotionally scar people, causing long-term body image issues, sexual issues, etc. I hope our society gets the fuck over that at some point in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.
Not planning on having any kids, for obvious reasons, but if I did it'd be a hill I'd probably be willing to die on.
-
@heterodox I'm very casual about nudity, my wife less so because of her own body image issues but she's getting better as she realises I still fancy her after having two children. Both kids have been breastfed so they've seen more of her boobs than I have over the last couple of years.
I totally agree that body shaming is a bad thing, and would like to assure you all that the scream I mentioned was the shock of seeing an unexpected face rather than not wanting to be seen naked

Couple that with a face you associate with floor level now being eye to eye and I imagine it certainly would cause a startle.
-
@polygeekery I think there's something hardwired into us that no matter what the level, an unexpected face in particular is just very startling.
Every once in a while when I'd wake up before our alarm, I used to roll over so I was nose-to-nose with my ex and would grin maniacally just waiting for him to open his eyes. The results were always worth the wait.
I am not a nice person. But I digress.
-
@heterodox no matter how long you've been with someone, it's always possible to freak them out if you tell them you've been watching them sleep in the right tone of voice

When my wife and I started dating she had this really cool cat. One of the few likeable cats to have ever lived. But she did one disconcerting thing. I would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and she would be sitting on the pillow in front of my face, only a few inches from my nose...just staring at me.
It never failed to make me jump.

Been meaning to post this.
We got a balance bike for my 5 yo at the beginning of June. Figured by next year she'd be ready for a regular 2 wheeler. She took to the bike just like that...
On July 4th we took her to the bike shop to see what size bike we should get her.
We ended up buying one there...she took to it like that. We have video of her taking off and pedalling completely on her own in front of the bike shop.
Never did I expect her to figure it out that quickly.

you are much more likely to scar a baby by tabooing your body. FYI: There is this thing called "bonding", which involves laying the naked (+Diaper) newborn baby on one of the mostly naked parents (skin on skin).
Our todler showers with one of us sometimes; its faster than a bath, and fun for everyone.
A naked body itself is nothing sexual.

That's it; time to go to bed. I read that as "tattooing."

I'm trying to explain the difference to my 5 yo she
can go in normal public with her sun bathing suit (works for my bathing suit too which could pass for workout attire) but not the indoor bathing suit. While also changing her on the beach.

@hardwaregeek If parenting is gonna be teaching kids the way you just described I think I LL pass on the whole kids and parenting thing.

@stillwater A lot of life is like that. Think of the rules of English spelling/pronunciation; there are so many exceptions to exceptions to exceptions, it'll make if you try to explain it all at once.

A graduate physics professor told us that we don't really learn anything new in physics training--we learn it once as an underclassman in undergrad (and can function at the high-school level), the same things again as an upper-division undergrad (and can start to function at the college level), yet again in classes of grad school (where we finally have it at the college level properly), again (and properly this time) in research as a grad student. And then you finally start to master it as a post-doc.
