Mechanic: Do you want to wait here, or go home?
Customer: How long will it take?
Mechanic: Until 4PM
It's 9AM.The funny thing is, this guy obviously had no Plan B for the mechanic. No one to drive him, no entertainment. It seems he opted to go home, but it's gonna be a nice long walk.
How long did he think the "big service" would take?

Obviously the (non published) password rules are precise.
- Must have 1 digit
- Must have 8 or more different letters
- Must have 4 special characters, but not
<
,>
,&
,'
or"
. For raisins. - Must be between 8 and 12 characters in length.
Edit: Updated per @dkf
Jesus. I was kidding. I just had to change my password on a website (FSA/HSA stuff)
Your password must contain at least ten characters, one upper case letter, one number and one special character. Special characters supported are ! @ # $ % & *. The letters in your password are case sensitive. Your password cannot be a previous password.
So far, I know they remember at least 3.

Take a whole day off to sit at car mechanic while their car is being done?
I've done this with a half-day (work from home for first half, take car in for second half) when the work was gonna take 3-4 hours or so, but never a full day.
-
@tsaukpaetra
Not sure why you sound surprised by that

I strategically pick the car mechanic that is walking distance from home.
I don't care how good he is. My convenience beats my car's convenience.

Theoretically I have one of those (if by "walking distance" you mean "all the way at the other end of town over a mile away", but I know the guys at the place I go to and they don't jerk me around. The manager of that shop is one of the guys who used to be a leader-type person in my old Boy Scout troop when I was little.

Just over a mile? That's walking distance to me.

For you, maybe. For my fat, lazy ass who lives in a town full of big-ass hills, I think otherwise :D

Sort of. The "town" in question is only one square mile in definition, but it is entirely surrounded by another township. People living near the borders (like me, I'm literally 3 houses from the official town border) use the town as a mailing address, but the township's services (trash pickup, etc).

I know because it doesn't just fail or corrupt data silently. Instead, when it hits the bad sector or something, the led activity indicator starts doing a slow blink fading on and off that it never did before. Pretty cool failure mode.

Now get the ^&%$ off my computer. On a related note, saw a teacher who's school-provided iPad was somehow missing Safari. As in--Safari wasn't installed and wouldn't show up in search, in the settings app, nowhere. How that is possible, I'm not sure. He's not tech savvy enough to jailbreak or anything else like that. Three, actually. The first month was "still working on it, be patient". The second was "oh whoops, order script screwed up, our bad, try again". The third was "we've been out of hosts for a while but we're spinning some more up tomorrow!" Tomorrow was over a week ago.

Somehow I've managed to accumulate friends that go by that name, and they like toys, but they try to run them off Milwaukee-PC-grade internet, or on a spare potato, or using some ridic expensive SaaS platform that does everything but only has nine fives uptime. This is going to be their new toybox. Two minecraft thingies, a terraria thingy, an ark thingy, an openttd thingy, whatever shambling Python abomination my GF comes up with for her MMO (she makes sure that
stackless
really is stackless), plus the usual web/email/XMPP/voice/SSO combo platter.

Likewise sorry to hear that. A team member of mine recently broke his elbow, I believe, and I know it's been a pain in the ass for him (ironically). Hope PT goes well, if applicable, and you're not too impaired driving/getting around.

Might be that he deleted the app icon. My father in law did the same with messages on his iphone.
The only fix is to reset the homescreen layout, which will remove all folder setup and organisation

Status: trying to understand where svn hides my password and make it stop.
Our SVN server uses the Windows domain password to authenticate. I changed my password earlier this week (because of stupid policy that passwords must be changed every X months -- the only "security" gained by that is that IT doesn't need to ask users for passwords as they are written on post-its but whatever, that's not the point here...).
My SVN client must store the password somewhere, because since Monday I've managed to lock myself out of my account at least once every 2 hours.
I tried turning off (again... and again... and again... this thing always finds a way to come back) gnome-keyring, kwallet, svn store-password and all the settings I could. Every time I think I've found a way. And every time I get locked out again.
-
@remi
What about that super critical service you set up to run as yourself because it didn't work with regular credentials?
-
@izzion I... don't think that I did that... ... not that I remember... at least, not on my Linux account (which is where I have this issue).
Although I think that this time I got it. I've removed all password storage in ~/.subversion, it now asks me for my password every fucking time I do anything with SVN, but at least it seems not to lock any more.
(although... why doesn't it ask for the password for an svn diff? Doesn't that need to go to the server for the original version?)
-
@jaloopa said in The Official Status Thread:

It's not just that if it doesn't show up in the Settings app. If it doesn't show up in the Settings app, it's not installed.
-
@heterodox I bow to superior iOS knowledge. with my FIL, he could see that he had new messages if he went into the search UI but had no way to get to the app otherwise
-
@remi said in The Official Status Thread:

I think it knows the currently checked out state, so if you are doing a compare against that then it doesn't need to phone home. Diffing two commits will require talking to the server, but that's a less common option.

And since iOS10, this is possible to do for preinstalled apps! Just like uninstalling any other app!
He can redownload/reinstall it from the App Store. I think that's the only one you CAN'T do it to.
