Unless if you're installing SBS anyway. :P

Easier than paying another grand plus for licensing...
That's not an unreasonable point (along with additional hardware and running costs) but should be compared against the potential costs of putting things right if a DC gets compromised. The ideal is to have a DC do just the one job only and lock it down tighter than a nun's chuff.

SBS, and you get Exchange and SQL Server thrown in too!
I've worked with SBS; I can understand the attraction and benefit of having a lot of functionality available for a relatively low cost, but IME in order to not run sluggishly it seemed to require a level of hardware which if you could afford it you probably didn't have to resort to SBS in the first place.
I was also not a fan of the prescribed AD configuration it came with, and not being able to run a second DC along with the many-eggs-in-one-basket approach was a disaster just waiting to happen for many customers who were unlikely to have the technical nous to get themselves out of trouble.
SBS was a way for MS to squeeze more revenue from it's product line while getting smaller businesses tied in to the ecosystem – I imagine that many of them are Microsoft 365 customers by now.

My favorite thing about this thread is that I continue to see it and think that it's some ancient necro'd post. GODDAMNIT...oh, right.

That's a little unfair, it was designed to be a simple drop-in network in a box for SMEs that might otherwise have just had a Workgroup.
Because of that it was really understood that you'd be fixing/restoring from backups if something broke rather than anything failing over in any way. And that was fine for the target market really. It only really struggled if you ran SQL Server on the box too. And I managed to run out of ephemeral ports once which was an experience.
I do think it was pretty perfect for its niche, which is why Server Essentials buggers the people on the 'M' side of SME as they now need full-fat Server but haven't really got the money for it.

I liked SBS, it's a shame they killed it. Worked well enough at what it was supposed to do.
Meh. There was just enough different about it that it was a PITA to support. If you have an issue you have to check first if it is a SBS specific issue or vanilla Windows Server issue. Once other email services got to feature parity with on-site Exchange, there was no draw for it anymore. The only benefit I saw it having was simplified and cheaper licensing as compared to vanilla Server.

Oh yeah, that was another thing that pissed me off about SBS.
Also, you could add another DC as part of the migration process but IIRC there was a time limit to how long they could both be run in tandem. So you had better hope that everything goes smoothly because if things go sideways, or you just get distracted with other work, that one would bite you in the ass. Which happened to us once.
Luckily there were "workarounds" to that limitation out there on the 'net. ;)

Yeah, the SBS specific issues were a problem. And the single /24 supported was really annoying when you starting adding other subnets.
We are SBS 2008 R2 at the moment and a ton of CentOS VMs. I think our migration plan is going to be Server Standard and Office 365 as we have too many seats for Essentials.
Edit: I keep trying to push Linux only but that's not going to happen. Our users really like Windows and Office.

I have one. Windows on all 4 sides (except the stairs/elevator in the middle hide those windows). And about 100ftx100ft. I do have to share the space... (fucking open space setups...)

i've heard of doing it in open space, but actually doing it to open space, or having open space do it to you......

Alex, if you're still reading this, the preceding 10 or so posts is the reason so many people left after adopting Discourse. The fact that Discourse was awful didn't help, but mostly it was the invasion of inanity.

as one who was an observer in the pre-discourse days i object!
the inanity was always there, it's just that the inanity is no longer your preferred brand of inanity.

Well, SBS is good for companies like trading company that never plan to go above like 10 staffs. If you plan to expand beyond that, you shouldn't use SBS anyway and they have offer on migration kit that allow you to transform it to "standard" configuration.
To me it's like using "personal" version of software than complain that the software won't cover business usage scenarios, while completely neglecting there is also "commercial" version at much higher price that get those scenarios covered.
