STATUS: Pretty much doing nothing! After the re-org the boss and all managers decided to take their vacations. It is too quiet here and if I sleep that would be the most productive task. Then I will continue learning some hipster ML stuff to work on later perhaps, and leave off early I am not cheap, nor the handful of remaining engineers in this org.
I will be looking to move to some other org, if slacking continues.

Oi! I happen to be one of those third party performance tuning experts (in general from an SQL tuning perspective), TYVM!
-
@izzion So you agree, Resharper is degeneratively slow?

Hell if I know, Resharper isn't part of the toolchain I use for TSQL :P

@dkf if you enjoy lightning explosions in ARPGs, and would prefer one that's complete, Path of Exile is getting the last six acts of it's story on the fourth!
-
@magus That makes me mad I ever played it.
-
@createdtodislikethis oh? Well, you did create your account to dislike it after all :p
They are also removing repeating the story multiple times, So it's just one big awesome play through!
-
@magus said in The Official Status Thread:

Followed by what? Don't tell me they stopped catering to their core fanbase of obsessive build optimizers?
-
@createdtodislikethis Oh of course not, the mapping is still as it was, with the whole atlas and the Shaper and such. They just got rid of the biggest barrier to entry: most people don't want to play the same game three times to get to the endgame for each character.
-
@magus So basically the same thing blizzard did with the d3 expansion?
-
So I started playing World of Warcraft.
I had to choose a race so I picked night elf.
Later I had to choose two professions so I picked mining and engineering.
Later I learned the area where night elves start is one of the few ones in the game that doesn't have any minable ores at all
-
@pleegwat No?
Maps have been part of Path of Exile since long before that expansion, and the way the atlas actually works bears no resemblance at all, despite being added to the system later.
D3 still has difficulties, and you pretty much have to change them a bunch of times to keep your experience gain up.
Path of Exile has no difficulties anymore at all, just the game and an endgame, where the endgame is loot, not paragon levels.

STATUS: 13 years after release I've completed the main plots of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. On proper, legit carts. The only not legit bit being that I added the AuroraTicket and MysticTicket items to my saves, because time travel hasn't been invented yet so I can get them the legit way (and I'm unsure if the MysticTicket was ever given out in Europe anyway). And as I'm stuck at my sister this weekend taking care of her pets I'm now focusing on Pokémon Diamond and hoping a thunderstorm is gonna hit the town. (Saw a flash from a distant one at least!)

Disassembly completed. I think I'll need some distilled water or something but I might actually successfully complete a project like this for a change.
Unless the problem is between the PCB and the metal plate of course.

Status: Earlier this week, someone (not us) withdrew, in 4 ATM transactions, over $1700 from our checking account. That had $1300 in it.
The bank helpfully covered the overdraft by transferring $500 from the credit card we have with them.

Why would they do that? Instead of failing the transaction like any sane system would.
Also, that sucks. I hope it can be sorted swiftly so you'll get your money back!
-
-
@atazhaia I called them and identified the 4 transactions, also mentioned the $500 it had transferred automatically and an ATM transaction fee that was charged. They're sending all the forms and had like three paragraphs of legal speak for the poor lady to read over the phone. It sounded like they would provisionally credit the account, but I don't see anything just yet.

Yup the wiring is on the other side. And that's soldered in place. I think I'm screwed. Also I just tested it and windows does not detect it at all anymore.
PS on screen keyboard sucks.

Decided to mess around with lisp in linux on windows.
SBCL: The main console input indicator never appears, so you can't execute anything except by entering a debug layer thingy
CMUCL: Assumes you are a god of linux and can install it.
CLISP:/usr/lib/clisp-2.49/base/lisp.run: error while loading shared libraries: libavcall.so.0: cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Invalid argument
- Basically, it wants me to be less valid.

Path of Exile
I've said it before; something about PoE just doesn't manage to hold my attention. I've given it a try a few times too. (I'm not nearly a good enough game designer to be able to say what the problem is either beyond the utterly unactionable “doesn't do it for me”.)
-
@dkf I'd be interested in knowing how far through it you got.
Because normally the point where people quit is when they have to play through all the same content the second or third time. Most people who get past that currently probably do so because their friends and streamers entice them with what comes later, I expect.
The problem is, most builds don't even work properly until your second playthrough.
Which is why this change to one continuous story is likely to improve the situation. They're also redoing part of the dialog, because the lore is changing just a bit. They're also making supports part of a tutorial at level 1, so you can begin to see some of the interesting stuff straight away, rather than waiting a long time.
So if you do feel like giving it another chance, definitely the beginning of next month is the best time.
-
@magus said in The Official Status Thread:

Well that's a clear example of something that is actively wrong. You've obviously thought a lot more about it than I have.
-
@magus Didn't it also use to be that the average 'do what looks cool' build didn't work once you hit the second difficulty level?
-
From this discussion, it sounds like PoE took all the bad parts of D2 to attract all the people who think that shitty game design is part of the challenge that keeps scrubs out. Because the game mechanics of D2 has really not aged well and I applaud the designers of D3 who threw that shit out and made a system that is sane and not full of bad decisions.
-
"e-mail.microsoft.com"? That's totally a scam site! - GMail
-
@pleegwat A build that takes no defenses will usually start to fail by the third difficulty. If you follow the general rule of "Put more points into life or energy shield than other things" any build will work out.

They did keep it fairly hard, but most of the difficulty in PoE stems from the overall complexity and number of options. Because you can do anything, you can do dumb things. But it's not as bad as it used to be, and as long as you just generally use your passive tree defensively, you can do anything.

Man, I didn't know Power over Ethernet was such a complex standard.

Cranking up the voltage will just fry the switch ... power over ethernet will have to do until we switch everything to USB connectors

But why not switch everything to ethernet instead? It's faster and works over long distances too.
