Well, considering that I've tried a mission 4 times now and still haven't managed to kill anyone... and the weakest enemy can kill my tanks in one hit... I'd say you're right.
-
@anonymous234 there is a button to save action points for reaction shots. I used to move slowly and got most of the kills with that in the beginning IIRC

XP to <anything> was a technically fairly difficult migration. Lots of crossing the 32/64bit barrier. Much changed security model. Much changed deployment model. Lifecycle-stalled hardware had to be replaced to even think about working. That's where all the complexity came from.
The UI changes and resultant user training were just a detail stupid management types liked to obsess over because it's something they understood. Did ANYONE actually train ANYONE in reality?. 7 to 10 is just UI changes, really.

Status: Got a nice surprise. I ordered a diffraction grating foil (1000 lines per millimeter) so my pupils could then use a small bit of that foil to create a lowcost spectrometer. Basically, you're building a small cardboard box, cut a narrow slit on one end and then glue a bit of the foil at an opening on the other end. Align this opening with the foil at an angle to the lens of a mobile camera and you've got your spectrometer.
You then only need to calibrate it using a light source with known properties - we'll be using a mercury vapour lamp because the wavelength for its spectral lines are pretty well known. Looks roughly like this:I paid 19€, of that 3.50 € were for shipping and the rest was for a DIN A4 sized foil.
What I didn't expect was a scientific magazine which normally costs about 8.50€ - nice touch. The contents of this particular edition are also directly related to what I'll be teaching next semester: Astronomy.

Well that was... unpleasant. For the record, playing games at 7 FPS is not fun.
Which makes me sad, because I have a nice 1070 that should be able to get me the satisfaction I desire, but apparently Square Enix has no intent to actually get it working on newer hardware. At least, according to a 1000+ post forum topic complaining about the issue.
I mean, what kind of low-level hacking must be going on in their engine that somehow it fails to even launch on good hardware? This reminds me of the "good ol' DOS days"...
The story seems nice enough (I got the point where they start walking you though the Settings menu (), but it's just so hard to enjoy when I have to go down to 640x480 resolution to make it playable. What's weird is that certain cutscenes play out at 30 FPS just fine. Apparently having user controls breaks performance or something.
I've thus far played 1.9 hours (just below the refund limit in Steam).
What do you think? Should I request a refund at this point?

so...... it defintiely runs on the 10 series of card.
also it's hella worth playing!
i won't blame you if you do the refund because of the issues with getting it to run but......... the game is so wonderful and awesome! everyone should play it!

@Tsaukpaetra
How are you installing updates to the graphics driver for your 1070? I think NVIDIA's installers include a "clean install" these days, or you could try using http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html to forcibly remove your driver and re-install from scratch.I've had several problems with (AMD) drivers getting stuck and boogering up high-end cards when an updated version has problems with leftover .DLLs or registry entries from a previous version. DriverSweeper was kind of my reflex "first step" before installing an update, until AMD basically implemented that functionality in their own installer.
Edit: actually read the page for DriverSweeper, they've deprecated that in favor of a newer product, changed my link accordingly.

Man, my client's IT infrastructure has melted down. There's apparently no outbound access to the Internet yet on site today, no inbound remote access methods I'm trying are working, and for the past three days about 75% of e-mail I've seen going in and out simply hasn't been delivered. The help desk's lines are all busy and they're not even letting you leave a message at this point.
... so what to do today, what to do... days like this (which are sadly not infrequent) make one wonder why one came into the office at all.

Thing is, I'm not 100 percent certain it's the drivers, since literally all other games I've tried this far work fine (well, viscera cleanup detail doesn't seem to recognize mouse, but hopefully that's not a graphics card issue, else )
Before yesterday I was using the Microsoft copy of the drivers, and updated using Nvidia to the latest. Will try smashing the existing drivers to bits probably tonight.

I have never seen a "chip explode" in my life. I've seen a UPS spit out forks of lightning (that was really fucking scary), capacitors explode, power supplies melt (And someone drop a screwdriver into a PSU being tested case free) but I've never seen a "chip explode"
i've seen it twice.
once was an old AMD chip (before preinstalled heat spreaders were a thing) that someone was playing around with in a bench with a voltage generator and decided to see what would happen when they pumped 24 volts into the primary VCC pin. turns out what happens is the chip heats up FAST. so fast it exploded from thermal shock.
the other time was when someone plugged a poorly keyed SATA power conenctor into the PCI socket on a modular power supply and blew a little crater out of every NAND flash chip in the SSD that was attached to that SATA power cable.
never seen it happen in a fully functional computer though. :-)

@Tsaukpaetra
The dirty secret of modern video gaming is that it's always the video drivers. Driver makers put in game specific hacks by the dozen for new games. So I would definitely check a clean install for the driver with any driver update while troubleshooting game problems.

I wasn't copied in on the email, and I don't think the person who sent it is someone who'd have access to the physical server. Plus photography on-site is verboten for security reasons.

I can't confirm what's actually happened, that was just how it was described to the person who told me.

Status: FFS, microsoft...
It looks like the Crater's Pupdate took out the UI for launching "Disk Cleanup" if you right click a drive in Windows Explorer and choose Properties.
But you can still get the same GUI tool, as long as you search for it in the Start Menu.
How does a change like that breaking people's muscle memory get from -100 to 0 in terms of feature value???
-
@izzion They're probably trying to deprecate that tool in favor of the one in the "Settings" app.
But since they're Microsoft, this means it will take 10 years for the new tool to reach feature parity with the old one (if it ever does) and get removed (if it ever does), and during all this time using either of the tools will be awkward and difficult.

That's quality Darwin Award territory right there. 24 volts? Christ almighty.
well it was a six year old chip at the time, and it was on a lab bench not in a PC, but yeah.....
