That one was tough, but FYI, the 1815 mentioned on the Louisiana plate actually does have to do with the war of 1812 unless I'm quite mistaken.
Ah, you're right. I thought that was referring to its statehood, but it's referring to The Battle of New Orleans.

You correctly matched 25 states.
Honestly expected a bit better, considering random guess plus 5 for the surrounding states and mine.
-
And sometimes there will be a "special issue" plate design for a limited time, so people can choose the special design or the regular one.
Yeah, I've seen no less than five different designs for Arizona
-
Missed all of the states on one screen, none of the states on all the rest of them...

This one, for anyone who was curious:
Apparently the states on each page are identical each time, because they were the same the second time through. It looks like the answer blocks are in a random order, but that's the only thing that's randomized.
-
@anotherusername I would have been able to guess that the one that says "MAR" and has a motto ending in "Land" was Maryland. No idea on any of the others
-
@Jaloopa Lol. "MAR" is the registration sticker... it expires in March. Wrong logic, right conclusion, I guess...
-
@anotherusername You have a physical sticker on your numberplates? What happens if someone steals it to put on their unregistered car?
We used to have tax discs in the window but got rid of them a couple of years ago since it's all done with ANPR anyway.
-

They have a pattern scored into them, so trying to remove it will very likely rip it into little pieces.
Not that it's not easy to do anyway. Just put a piece of clear tape on top of it, and use a good razor blade scraper to lift it off.
Stealing just the sticker doesn't do much good anyway, since the cops have license plate scanners now; they can look up your registration based on your license plate number and that'll tell them it's expired even if you pasted a stolen sticker on it. Thieves mostly just steal the whole plates now, since it's dirt simple to just unscrew a couple of screws.

Alternatively, find a car that's been registered for a while and has a stack of stickers. I know it works because I removed my stack last time I updated my registration.
-
@anotherusername Thinking about it, it's pretty useless for detecting expired registration anyway without a year on it.
UK tax discs had the month and year, and changed coulour every year so you could tell at a glance if it wasn't one of the two colours currently valid
-
@Jaloopa Where I am the sticker has the year and month, which is the birth month of the owner. They change the colour every year as well.
-

And what about a vehicle owned by a married couple? How do they decide which birth month to use then? Or is joint ownership not allowed?
-
@abarker AFAIK there is no joint ownership, so it's just the one person.
-
@abarker do American vehicles not have a single registered keeper? Over here, there's the registered owner and registered keeper, both single names
-
@Jaloopa The exact terms used can vary by state, but you basically have an owner and a registrant.
The owner can be a company, and individual, or multiple people, though it is generally restricted to two people. When multiple people are listed as the owners, the names are listed as either "AND" or "OR", indicating whether sale of the vehicle requires joint authorization (AND) or only an individual's authorization (OR).
The registrant can also be a company, individual, or multiple people, though again it is often restricted to two people. The registrant is responsible for paying the registration/licensing fees for the vehicle and ensuring that proper insurance is maintained. Often, the registrant is also responsible for retrieving the vehicle in the event it is impounded and paying any parking fines.

In CA, we have 2 stickers - one for the month (car initially registered) and one for the year. The year changes color.
-
@anotherusername Here in Indiana, we have license plate stickers that show not only the year of expiration, but also the plate number. Thus, you can't just swipe a sticker from one plate and put it on another.

Now that I look closer, MAR is probably printed on the plate itself; the month they expire is set when they're issued, and it never changes. There's a sticker in the lower-right for the expiration year; that sticker is replaced when you renew them.

Sure, if anybody looks closely enough to tell... only way that probably gets noticed is if they pulled you over for something else, and they would've figured out that your plates were expired anyway if that happened.

No, some states have separate stickers for the month and year. This is apparently one of those.
The first one has a M
O YY
N sticker on the bottom right.
The second plate has the month at the top-right, and the year on the bottom-right.
The third and last ones have the month on the top-left and the year on the top-right.
The second and third plates might have the month also on the year sticker.@anotherusername said in 🚘:

-
@djls45 that was pretty well 'd already. I'm actually not sure if "MAR" is a sticker, or if it's actually just printed directly on the plate; I am pretty sure the 4th plate in the set has "OCT" imprinted as part of the plate itself.
-

If you look closely, you can see the edges of a sticker, and a slight difference in color against the plate.

Again, if you look closely (it helps to click on the image for a larger view), you can see where the bottom edge of the sticker crosses the raised, but unpainted, portion of the 2.
-
@abarker it does have a background, but that could be painted on also. I can't tell from the picture.
-
@anotherusername It doesn't really make sense to print the month on the plate anyway. Many plates are handed out at the DMV (or whatever the state equivalent is). Since the month of expiration is unknown until the plate is handed out, why print the month on the plate? Sure, some plates are mailed for vehicles purchased at a dealer, but why have two different processes?
-
@abarker they go through enough plates that they could probably aim to run out of the plates for that month sometime around the last week of it, and then just start giving people plates that were printed with the following month.
-
@anotherusername Printing the month on a plate is definitely .
-
@boomzilla I'm a dumb... I forgot to mention that, if they had, say, some leftover JUL plates when the month of July ended, they could just stick them in a box in the closet with "JUL" written on it, and get them out the next time a month called July rolled around. Apparently we have one of them every year or something.
It makes perfect sense to just print the expiration month directly on the plate. Why waste resources making stickers for it when it'll never change in the lifetime of the plate?
-

Why waste resources by multiplying the kinds of plates you make (and have to stock!) by 12? Stickers are cheap and you can use the same stickers on all the different kinds of plates.
-

At any one given point in time, they really shouldn't have a ton of them on hand. And it's not like it's super difficult for them to change 3 letters in the design once a month when they're already changing the plate number to be unique for every set of plates...

Do they stock a bunch of different plate styles at your DMV? I thought you had to special order if you wanted the "choose breasts" or "life cancer awareness" plate design.

Yes.

I'm sure it varies by state. No matter the way they do it, your inventory plan is horrible.

It will in CA. When I bought a new car and transferred my personalized plate, the month changed to when I bought the new car.
-
@dcon from the DMV's perspective, it was actually a new vehicle registration with new license plates. That's why the month changed.
The "lifetime" of a set of license plates doesn't include reincarnation. .

But from my point, they're not new! In fact, I (well, the dealer) had to physically move them from the old to new car.

@anotherusername Ugh. People who make puns like that need to be incarcerated.
