Right. Second mortgage too. And selling your first-born. Hmm - Problem, I'm single.

SKA
Gigabytes of OS really counts as small beans.
At that scale, I'm not sure it even counts as a small bean.
@RaceProUK said in The Return of Windows RT?:
@xaade But you need to build up that critical mass to do so first. Facebook managed it, but I can't think of any other examples right now.
Linux, via Android, comes to mind.

Always online, and every restart entails a 5 GB download.
You realise that networks are starting to get fast enough that doing that is almost sensible?
Yeah, I have "minimum" of 200 Mbps fibre - in practice, if the server is "near" enough, I can get up to 320 Mbps on downloads. That's 40 MB/sec, around half the rate my hard disks can sustain. It's a bit scary sometimes, telling something to download and realising I blinked or looked away for a moment and missed the download.
Lucky you. Us USians would have to mortgage the house to get service like that. Assuming it was even available. I'm in Silicon Valley and I don't have access to that.
Yeah, I've got about .1% of that where I am, and no real alternatives last time I tried to find one. The better service stopped just across the street, or something like that.

Ads.
The start menu already has
adssuggested apps.Oh, and speaking of ads...
Note the utter lack of a "NEVER AGAIN" button.
Yeah, every reboot i have to kill that.

Clicked it every time. Still comes back.
I think it looks like a BHO, gonna try rooting around to disable that if it is...

Butane Hash Oil?
Browser Helper Object.
Which, by the way, are definitely still (technically) supported in Windows 10.

I know; it was the only plausible meaning on the disambiguation page, but Butane Hash Oil was the first Google result and, I thought, the funniest of the alternate acronym expansions.

Epic Games founder doesn’t want a Windows that only installs apps from the Store.
Then don't buy it?
Last year, Sweeney attacked the Universal Windows Platform API. He claimed (incorrectly) that third-party stores such as Steam would be unable to sell and distribute UWP games, leaving them at a disadvantage relative to Microsoft's own store.
I think I'll take his opinions with a pinch of salt.
A version of Windows 10 that can only use software from the Windows Store, as Windows 10 Cloud is believed to be, would certainly be bad news for Steam.
The return of Windows RT is going to magically remove the millions of existing Steam installs? Quick! To the lawyers' offices!
Looking at a related article:
Sweeney then compared UWP to Google's Android, which is "technically open, but practically closed" thanks to how "comically difficult" it is for general users to sideload apps.
On both Android and Windows 10, you can enable side-loading in under 30 seconds. Then again, I guess checking a checkbox is hard for some people.
Maybe he meant iOS, but then he'd be wrong twice. (Cue in @masonwheeler)

They have not released any new Windows Phones in a while
It's just coming up to a year since the last Lumia, the 650, was released. That seems consistent with how often iPhones are released annually.
How often are iPhones released annually? Annually? Nope, half-yearly.
Also, does Microsoft do premium phones? I seem to recall Lumia 650 was closer to a budget phone.
-
@kt_ Aren't all Windows phones budget phones?

That's based on the assumption that a Chromebook, or being like a Chromebook, is a good thing.
For a lot of people it is. There's a huge demographic of people who mostly browse the web, might want to edit some documents but never need to do more than Office 365 or Google Docs offer, and not much else. It's limiting for tech professionals but exactly what's needed for others

It costs about the same as the "up to 20Mbps" ADSL2+ service it replaced. And it includes a /56 IPv6 service as well.
Location: northern France. OK, I live in a large town. I have no idea what sort of service is available in rural France.

That is, I admit, more or less what I was expecting. A colleague lives in a smaller semi-rural town, and he has 3.3Mbps ADSL of some sort.

I admit it'd probably be slow on my Icon
I think that is exactly the reason Microsoft only allows it on select devices. I think they're scared people are going to use it on underpowered devices and be turned off by the slowness of it. They only want it to be on devices they know can run it smoothly. Tbh though, I only used it on my Lumia 950 XL once or twice, to try it out, and only because I got the dock fro free when I bought the phone...

I probably wouldn't have a lot of use for it in general, but that's only for now. There's already some relatively serious software in the store in categories that mean little to me, but if they were to bring out, say, a version of visual studio on it, or some high end games... clearly the limitation would just be the hardware. And that's improving.

Just wait till they make Edge OS.
The one that always nags you to try it?
"I see you opened Internet Explorer in order to work with a website that uses ActiveX. Give Edge a try. It is not total shit. Promise. For realsies."
Go fuck your hat.

The same people who brought you Internet Explorer proudly bring you Microsoft Edge
Really starting off on the wrong foot there

@bb36e they should have lied and said that it was an entirely different team. A team that is not functionally retarded.

@Polygeekery They really should, considering they already lie with the "it's a totally new rendering engine!" thing.

Doesn't necessarily work. I actually decided to give a game that was advertised in Microsoft Solitaire Collection a try, so I downloaded and installed it (and have been playing it regularly). I still get ads for it while I'm playing Solitaire though.

Almost nothing. I am lucky to get 2 Mbps, when the wind hasn't caused the electricity line to short (it took a couple of such occurrences before my girlfriend's work agreed to get her an UPS...).
What's hilarious is that the regional government has said that every "commune" will get optic fibre by 2020 (or something like that), which in our case would mean laying down at least 10-15 km to serve a maximum of 2000 people (including all neighbouring villages), just to get to the village. Yeah, not a chance.
(they didn't even include the usual get-out clause of such thing of "covering 99% of population" or such, they explicitly said "all"... it's likely that they will simply forget about small communities -- maybe with some half-assed excuse such as asking the village itself to pay for it, which it obviously won't be able to do...)

Yeah, pretty much what I thought. I live in one of the inner suburbs of Lille, and my immeuble only got fibre at the end of last year - Orange sent two guys to do my installation on 23 December - but it works really well.

I was confused at first, but then I checked dates and it turns out this topic predates the Epic Store by a year, which is why the guy was talking about Steam instead.
