The Return of Windows RT?
-
Sources at Microsoft told ZDNet's Mary Jo-Foley that Windows 10 Cloud will be a simplifed version of the OS, which will only run Unified Windows Platform apps installed from the Windows Store.
-
@RaceProUK Which, by the way, has made a man yell at clouds again:
-
Epic Games founder doesn’t want a Windows that only installs apps from the Store.
Then don't buy it?
Last year, Sweeney attacked the Universal Windows Platform API. He claimed (incorrectly) that third-party stores such as Steam would be unable to sell and distribute UWP games, leaving them at a disadvantage relative to Microsoft's own store.
I think I'll take his opinions with a pinch of salt.
A version of Windows 10 that can only use software from the Windows Store, as Windows 10 Cloud is believed to be, would certainly be bad news for Steam.
The return of Windows RT is going to magically remove the millions of existing Steam installs? Quick! To the lawyers' offices!
Looking at a related article:
Sweeney then compared UWP to Google's Android, which is "technically open, but practically closed" thanks to how "comically difficult" it is for general users to sideload apps.
On both Android and Windows 10, you can enable side-loading in under 30 seconds. Then again, I guess checking a checkbox is hard for some people.
But what we can conclude is that no Epic games are on the Windows St-
Ironically, one of the few games available on the Windows Store is Epic's Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.
Oh.

Right but most normal users aren't going to know they can do that. I agree with the other points though.

Guess what isn't available on Steam?

Windows Cloud : it's for the cloud !!!
Nope.
Microsoft's marketing strike again.
-
Meh. More developers going around with their heads in the clouds...
-
The good: It's a really nice platform, certainly a lot better than it was in the Win8 days.
The bad: I'd rather have an x86 or QUALCOMM edition and be able to install things. That's always going to be a problem with the UWP-only ones.
All I want is for them to announce a new Hololens for consumers!

But do they have their feet on the ground? If not, then I'm afraid they can't be my Shipoopi.

Yeah, this discussion is interesting and all, but let's get down to the important stuff:
How will they fuck up the start menu this time?
-
-
@boomzilla said in The Return of Windows RT?:
How will they fuck up the start menu this time?
Apps in the start menu will be loaded from a CDN
-
I feel like with all the people upset at Microsoft for having its own browsers, it's odd that people haven't gone after valve with massive antitrust lawsuits, since they seem really against having other stores exist and even made their own operating system to keep other people's stores out.

I'm gonna re-bring up my idea of OSaaS. Always online, and every restart entails a 5 GB download.
-
@Magus If Valve has done anything to actively interfere with GoG, Desura, or even Origin, I haven't heard about it...

Ads.
No, those will go in the notification area. (There's already big pretty pictures after doing an insider build)
-
@boomzilla said in The Return of Windows RT?:

Clicking the Start button will trigger Windows Update to restart the next time you're not looking.
-
@boomzilla said in The Return of Windows RT?:

It will be an @end menu instead. When you click it, you'll just get a "sorry, no longer welcome here" message, and have to use the command prompt to open your programs instead

Also, how often will it reboot without telling you?

I can't figure out what the hell is going on with Microsoft.
They spent a lot of effort building a software platform that can kick HTML5 and Android's asses. And then... they just kind of left it hanging? They abandoned Windows RT. They have not released any new Windows Phones in a while, they are refusing to make any Windows SmartTVs or smartwatches...
Instead they are focusing all their efforts on... 3D editing programs?

The one that always nags you to try it?
"I see you opened Internet Explorer in order to work with a website that uses ActiveX. Give Edge a try. It is not total shit. Promise. For realsies."

It's just coming up to a year since the last Lumia, the 650, was released. That seems consistent with how often iPhones are released annually.

Well duh, don't buy it. It's like buying a Fisher Price music keyboard and complaining you can't play Chopin on it.
It's a purposely nerfed experience for people who just want to browse the Net, edit some docs, maybe watch a movie. Why would you or I want it?
-
@masonwheeler said in The Return of Windows RT?:

Can you install any of those on SteamOS? I assume you can install Desura, but maybe not even that. Anyway, they attack Microsoft over this kind of thing all the time.
Note that I don't care: I'm fine with vendors making their own platforms with their own stores. But when you yell about someone doing it and you do too, you're stupid. And that's precisely what Valve did when Win8 came out.
-
@Magus Wasn't SteamOS a reaction to Windows 8? Which makes their stance even more ludicrous.
-
@anonymous234 said in The Return of Windows RT?:

Well, they're a giant company, so all we can really conclude is that no one at a high enough level has noticed that stuff in order to destroy it like the other stuff you mentioned.

@Magus said in The Return of Windows RT?:

SteamOS is basically just Debian Linux. You can install anything made for Linux in it.
-
@Magus Steam only interferes with those by virtue of being such a strong monopoly that alternatives could never get off the ground. There's no active interference, but there's a massive amount of passive interference, namely "why put our game on Store X when that's an additional set of compliance expenses that gets us effectively no extra revenue since everybody who would buy our game uses Steam already?" Also, GOG (nothing to do with goodness, oldness, or games anymore) has direct downloads, the client is strictly optional.

So, precisely none of those things. Like I said.

@bugmenot It did, until it made it's own platform where they don't exist, after yelling at Microsoft for making a platform where Steam doesn't exist.
Which, like I said, is the extent of their stupidity: yelling at someone else for it, and then doing it yourself. I don't mind in the slightest that both platforms exist and exclude eachother.

Wrong, there is a Desura Linux client.

Unless I missed something they still offer games, many of which are good and/or old

dual boot is still an option, right?
-
@xaade Probably not on Windows for Cloud, since it's likely an SoC-only one again, but who cares?

Even with perfect competition, you can't expect content creators to develop for multiple platforms out of the goodness of their heart to preserve market competition for the end consumers.
The market competition is selected by the content creators, that's where the competition exists. Just because end users aren't selecting, doesn't mean there's no competition.
Seriously, should the end users select every aspect of the final product? Even if it's functionally the same? But, I really didn't want that look for the water in my game. It's a monopoly that I can't select a different design team in your company. It's a monopoly that I can't select which source of sugar is used in Oreo's.
I don't think this is a Monopoly. I can't complain about monopolies just because a game exists on PS and not XBOX. We've had console exclusivity for a while now. Why is it a problem that we have PC OS exclusivity?
-
@xaade It isn't a problem. That's what I've been saying.

Microsoft's marketing strike again. This'll be great with that Cloud-to-Butt extension.

@bugmenot Ah yes, the network effect is a wonderful thing. It's why we're stuck forever with Steam, Windows, Android, Facebook, Whatsapp, MS Office...
Because you could make an Office suite that was 10x faster and more polished than MS Office and could literally give you blowjobs while you use it, but it wouldn't be able to open .docx files, so no one would buy it. You could make a social network that was better than Facebook, but what's the point when everyone is on Facebook. Etc.
If that's not a blatant failure of free market capitalism, I'd like to know what is.
-
@anonymous234 said in The Return of Windows RT?:

I think it's a blatant failure of physics or logic or something. Would an economic system that wasn't capitalism magically "solve" the network effect?
-
@Polygeekery EVERY FUCKIN TIME I NEED TO PRINT AND GO HOME
-
@Captain also every time you have a webinar to attend or any sort of online meeting.

Maybe, for varying definitions of "solve"
-
@Polygeekery A way to measure social capital isn't a terrible idea. Black Mirror did an episode about a scheme like this.
At the end of the day, it's not really much different than what we do here, where private parties (that we don't elect, and are unaccountable to us) compile and publish numbers/"scores" about each of us that determine how much we pay for stuff.
-
@Magus said in The Return of Windows RT?:

How many installations of SteamOS are there? Really? Having a monopoly on something that's rather niche doesn't really rile anyone (with a sense of perspective) up. Now, there might be a problem somewhere in the world, but if there isn't in the big markets then the amount of regulatory worry will be really minimal.
-
@dkf Who are you asking that, by the way?
