Thoughts on new Format?

do a proper rounding, i.e. "about 20 days ago" (or "later"), not 21.
Nah, this being WTDWTF, I suggest going the other way. So "about 21.5 (± 2 days) from now".

@El_Heffe But if computing time spans and writing them in a non-nonsensical manner
Why compute anything? That's my question.
Just stamp this post as January 11, 2017 7:09 am and be done with it.
If, for some reason, someone cares when this post was made, they can see exactly when it was. It's exact, right to the minute, and nothing has to be computed. It just seems like a simple, common sense approach.
-
@El_Heffe For the posts themselves, yeah. That seems to be the approach for older posts as well (e.g. those at the start of this thread). But the banners in between posts must have relative spans otherwise they are meaningless.
-
@RaceProUK said in Thoughts on new Format?:
Just replace all of these dates and time spans with "Before Now".
Problem solved
When I made one of my posts in this thread it said "About a minute from now" and then about a minute later changed to "About a minute ago."
Stop screwing with my mind.

We get it. Lots of us like seeing the time gaps. It's helpful to see and not at all obvious unless you are someone who always reads the timestamp on a post. Does anyone do that?

Just stamp this post as January 11, 2017 7:09 am and be done with it.Redundancy might be bad for machines, but it can be pretty helpful for humans. Many of the UIs you use every day have redundant elements, and most of the time it's for a good reason.
In this particular case, users who want information on a single post can look at the timestamp, while users who scan the page will notice the banners. If you know a better way of providing the information to the user in both scenarios, please enlighten us.
-
@El_Heffe Because it's fucking helpful. 25 minutes ago is 25 minutes ago, 12 years ago is 12 years ago. June 3, 1016, 14:55 is useless information 99% of the time, I just end up having to do the same calculation in my head (and on top of that, worry about what timezone it's referring to).

QFT. You can hover to see the exact time if you need to, otherwise give it to me in human readable form

Ooh, I know! You could map the text size, text color, and background color to the age of the post. Older posts become progressively more difficult to read, until beyond a "civilized" threshold, they become completely invisible.

@end's posts here got progressively more difficult to read (without going ballistic) as they got younger…

I'm pretty sure there weren't any standardized time zones to worry about 1000 years, 7 months, 8 days, and however many hours and minutes ago. Also, if a post on a computer forum has that timestamp, that information is certainly interesting, if not necessarily useful.
-
Why was the time gap wording changed anyway? "X time from now" doesn't really make sense in this context (
post -> 9 days later -> post
vspost -> 9 days from now -> post
)

You ought to float that idea to the "civilized" discourse people.
If you can register an account there without being immediately banned, I mean.

I avoided doing that when we were actually using it; I'm certainly not going to wade into that cesspit now. As for being banned, I have zero history there, so unless I used the same name I use here or a Mr. Burns avatar, there would be nothing to connect me to here, so no reason for an immediate ban; no doubt I'd get myself banned eventually for speaking truth to
powerego.

I thought his username was synonymous with "this post is deleted" and sockpuppets.

If everything I overdo turns into a synonymous with my username it would end being a generic verb like smurf.

that just means it's wise to moderate oneself. :-P

Isn't that the job of moderators ?
Oh, right. Nevermind.

That's also my beef with the "12 years": I don't mind rounding to a few years (again, don't care about 12 vs. 14), but why round to 12??? "more than 10 years ago", "about 15 years ago", any variation on that would work. But 12 instead of 14? Come on...
Or, you could do the sane, rational thing and drop all that BS completely and just stamp a post with the actual date and time, and forget all that nonsense about calculating how long its been.
It is though, you just have to hover!

No, just having dust in the air is bad for sometimes...

Do not worry you won't be generating enough friction to ignite the dust
