are less of a threat to your businesses bottom line than the bad customer experience that even well executed DRM tactics provide.
the hackers just break the DRM so they don't worry about it, but your customers have to suffer it.
DRM is not the solution.
deal with it another way.

@sloosecannon Technically, though, this isn't DRM. It's more of an actual security measure. I can kinda understand why they do it, because it makes it really hard for malware to root the phone, but still, ugh.

Yeah. Besides, if you need to unlock the bootloader can you not just lock it again afterwards anyway?
It's been a while since I had an Android phone and even longer since I messed about with bootloaders but that used to be possible.
-
@loopback0 Yeah, it is, buuuut....
If you relock it, you've gotta wipe the phone to unlock again. Which is a pain
-
@sloosecannon Oh, right, yeah.
-
@sloosecannon I'm pretty sure Android's thing is remote attestation, not an actual security measure (for the user at least).
Hey, remember when Intel and Microsoft wanted to add trusted computing stuff to desktop PCs and people said it would be the death of all freedom forever?

-
@RaceProUK The real question is which is worse - giving the money to @blakeyrat or @Lorne-Kates?

It depends on the device and stuff, but yeah, that's what SafetyNet is. The idea is that you shouldn't run something sensitive like a banking app on a device that's potentially compromised, and unfortunately user-rooted looks the same as rooted-by-that-porn-app-that-you-just-installed.
-
@loopback0 I did try giving money to @Lorne-Kates once, but Kickstarter or Indiegogo or whatever it was killed the campaign before I was debited.
It was only $1, so it wouldn't have been missed.
-
@RaceProUK Yeah, but...

:D
-
@loopback0 Well at least @Lorne-Kates actually posts here and doesn't only come back every now and then to tell us we're terrible.

I'm just waiting for virtualization to come to Android. Then we can have a "legit" VM to run the SafetyNet-needing apps on, and the rest of the OS can be as insecure as all getout.

@Tsaukpaetra Well, porting qemu to Android shouldn't be that hard since it's still Linux. It might run a little bit slow though...

Yeah, that was done (or something else, maybe DOSBOX), as well as BOCHS, but, yeah. Not fast at all.
I think I remember about an hour to boot Win95 last benchmark...
Besides, we want it to pass SafetyNet, so it must appear as close to cromulent as possible.

No.
Motorola phones use a qfuse to determine if the bootloader is unlocked. Once the fuse is blown, the phone is unlocked permanently.
EDIT: And I'm wrong apparently you can do a fastboot oem lock to re-lock the bootloader, there's the qfuse and a separate flag to determine if the user has unlocked the bootloader. But then you can't unlock it again because you don't have a key to unlock with, so why would you ever do that.

Status: My boss wants to know what I think of PostSharp. From quickly looking around at the website, it has some features that seem pointless, some that seem incredibly cool, and it seems to be free. Plus, I kind of like the concept behind it, since it seems to add to C# the things that have always seemed so useful in Lisp and similar.
Anyone know if it lives up to what it promises? If it's all compile time, it doesn't sound too bad...

Status: Next week school will start again. Also, I forgot to make an appointment with my car dealer to have the regular car checkup (which is required roughly every two years in Germany).
I'm doing this at my car dealer because I once went to an independent checkup company which thenĀ found something wrong. I had to fix that problemĀ (at my car dealer) and then take it back to that company so they could determine if I indeed fixed the problem.
At which point my contact at the car dealer told me that they could do the checkups as well and save me the run-around in case of a problem.
In myĀ defense: The name of the checkup is colloquially known as the TĆV which is the name of the independent company, kind of like "Kleenex" is theĀ name for hankies andĀ "Google"Ā stands for internet searches.
Anyway: As I said, I forgot to make an appointment and the checkups are only doneĀ until noon. Which poses a problemĀ because I usually have school before noon.
But they were kind and found me a free slot. Tomorrow. At 0630. Also: It'll be -7 Ā°C outside.
Gah.

Status: Preparing for some light snow while on summer-ish tires. It probably won't accumulate enough to be a problem (and in general, if there's enough snow on the ground to cause problems, I don't have to go to work), but it's gotten me thinking about getting a dedicated set of winter tires since I am planning on having two full sets of wheels come spring.
I mentioned this in passing to a coworker, and he wondered why I didn't just run one set of tires all the time, switching only to drag radials/summer tires when at the track, and using cheapo tires for daily driving. There are several reasons why:
-
I don't have a garage, live on the 3rd floor, and am prohibited from doing "vehicle maintenance" on the premises by the terms of my lease, so every time I want to go race, I would have to carry two 60-70lb wheels + tires down three flights of stairs, load them into the car, bring a jack and torque wrench, drive to the track, jack up the car, switch the wheels, secure the stock wheels and jack while I race so nobody steals them, jack up the car again, switch the wheels, load up, drive home, carry those wheels and all the equipment back up three flights of stairs, and call it a day. My proposal, involving having two full sets of wheels, would only involve carrying four wheels + tires up and down twice a year. I like that idea much better.
-
Using cheaper, higher treadwear tires may be a good way to save money, but it's not much fun to drive a performance car that spins tires through the first couple gears or loses traction when taking a curve at speed. In fact, at higher power levels, it can be downright dangerous (see: Mustang crowd videos). Also, 99% of the time you're driving it will be on the street, not on the track.
He seemed unconvinced. While I can see his point, he had trouble seeing mine. Perhaps car enthusiasts and "Point A to Point B" types have an irreconcilable gulf between them....

I bought my first proper motorbike in a very cold January, with a few weeks before it was due an MOT. The day I had booked for it, it had snowed but I was still planning on riding it to the MOT centre, just very carefully.
Except I hadn't put a cover on the bike, and had no garage, so the cold had frozen the ignition switch and I couldn't even start it. The MOT place weren't surprised, every bike they had booked in that day had cancelled.
-
@sloosecannon Does that equal 1694? That's what I get when I work out 1993-09-290, assuming a decimal interpretation for everything (as
