Status: watched 3 seasons of The Boys in 1.5 weeks. Don’t want to go to bed, since that inevitably brings me closer to don’t want to work tomorrow again. Or ever.

@topspin click the bottom right icon (your profile picture), then the cog, then the 3rd option down then App Language is the 4th option down.
Thanks for trying to help, but my profile picture isn’t even at the bottom right (RTL language stuff probably). However, I already found that you can change the language in the phone settings without going through the YouTube app.

RE: The Official Status Thread
@BernieTheBernie I closed the app since I have no idea how to change the language and modern design doesn’t like things like icons.

20+ years ago we had Slush Puppy regularly from the fast food stands at the local swimming pools. It was pretty common here in Germany.
I remember those at my local pool too. I never wanted one; they looked... unnatural, like something born of an unholy union betwixt Big Food and the nuclear reprocessing industry.

Think of the most ungrapelike artificial grape flavoring you can imagine, but worse. We eventually decided it was not even fake grape flavored; it was simply purple flavored.
Basically what any American supermarket smells like.

Who really knows what blue is supposed to taste like anyway? Food should not be that colour.
When I was in college the local convenience stores (Snappy-Mart) had their own equivalent of Icee/Slurpee called "Slush Puppy", which came in an assortment of colors, including blue.

RE: UI Bites
@ixvedeusi that's not just 2024. Microsoft has both deeply schizophrenic divisions and always acted as Rules for Thee, Not for Me. So much so that pointing it out anytime MS breaks those rules themselves is against Raymond's blog ground rules.

If it was just a matter of optical perception, I would expect the rest of the picture to have some (false) colour in it, but I only see the can as red
I can see other parts in the background as red, mostly the tracks and the buildings, just like in your white-balanced picture. Well, brown anyway. Same thing, really, but might explain why it's stronger for the can. If you look at your picture, there's other reddish things but the can is clearly the strongest.
So no, I doubt it's got much to do with pattern recognition. -

Welcome to the club. Kids these days do everything by watching video tutorials.
A year or two ago I was helping out a coworker who was struggling with some C++ code. While looking through it together, I told him to open the documentation for a certain class or function or whatever. I expected looking it up on cppreference, but he typed it into YouTube.

That's stealing, just like it's stealing to walk through someone's wide open front door and take the money lying on the kitchen counter.
Yeah, kinda.
It's more like I bring you a cake, you give me money in return but it's twice as much as you said you'd give me. The difference is that the machine / you hand me the money, so there's an argument to be made for you agreeing on the thing you are doing. It must have been rather obvious to them that they were not supposed to do that.
And if it's obvious that you're not supposed to win at slot machines, but (consistently, due to a bug) still do? Is that stealing?

RE: Hacking News
@LaoC's article said in Hacking News:
Known abusers of the TICO machines have been charged, and one of those set to face the courts is accused of association with a criminal group.
I know this is the other side of the "You can't 'Ackchyually' your way out of court" coin, but it seems kind of ridiculous. How is it their fault that the machines give out too much money? What if instead the slot machines had a bug so that you could actually win instead of "the house always wins". Would it then be criminal to play them?

The point isn't to pay foreigners a reasonable wage, no matter how the "Fachkräftemangel" talk makes you believe that. The point is to drive the price down with the alternatives of not paying well here or outsourcing because you "can't find anyone" here.

RE: Scientific Science
@cvi the whole problem is generally just Goodhart’s law in action.
You want some kind of public funding for science, for good enough reasons, so you need to decide what and whom to fund. That leaves either cronyism, arbitrary decisions, or non-arbitrary decision processes. So metrics will be cooked up to assess merit, but the metrics inevitably turn out to be bullshit. And now an entire industry of Chinese crap to game the bullshit. That’s not to say there’s not massive room for improvement.

give us millions of dollars to demo this in space.
You don’t need to demo this in space. If your shit was real and produced even a tiny fraction of the thrust required to “overcome earth’s gravity”, you could easily measure it on earth.
Christopher Plain is a Science Fiction and Fantasy novelist and Head Science Writer at The Debrief.

RE: In other news today...
@Tsaukpaetra it is the “final destination”, as far as HDCP is concerned. It goes from your Blu-ray player or whatever to your TV. The path from the TV to your eyes doesn’t have HDCP.
Edit: maybe I’m misunderstanding. My assumption is that whatever Roku does happens in the TV, not some set-top-box outside of it.
