RE: The Word of the Day Thread
Here's a word I saw in an exam I am marking right now:
samlier
as in "Product A and B is same as product C, but A is samlier."

RE: The Official Status Thread
@atazhaia There is a reason why one of their marketing songs started with the line "Welcome to Malmö, from here it's only 20 minutes to Copenhagen".

RE: The Word of the Day Thread
Which in a better world would have been pronounced "ass-cult", and how cool isn't that!
About the definition; I have encountered it in pedagogics, when you listen to another teacher's lecture in order to learn from each other.

A, but you only * think* you've understood. Wait until I have explained it.
No really, this is because my BA has to repeat every detail of a business process at least 3 times per discussion before getting to the point of what has changed or what may be wrong.
Or I am trying to ask her about X but she keeps explaining ABC which I have already told her I will fix.
I think I may have ed.
Repetition is the mother of all learning.
Corollary: unless it is repeated, you have not learned.
In other words, repetition on the transmitting side ensures learning on the reveiving end. Or, to learn you must listen. Over and over again. And again.

TL;DR: The article studies who, why, and when people reuse code from stackOverflow. So far, run of the mill "try to understand the developers because we ain't one of them" research.
But they threw in a bonus question too, and found that the number of bug fixing commits increase on files after stackOverflow code is added.
So, folks. Lay off StackOverflow and think for yourselves!

RE: Results of Dangerous Experimentation
I'm still reading, but I find that I actually agree with @blakeyrat . Again. And this time without having to filter away all the vitriol, which made for a nice change.
If it's not too late when I come to the end of the thread, I may chime in with some observations re healthcare.

Status: contemplating the word "reincarnation". So many words are borrowed from asia and asian mysticism, but not this one.
I mean... you can sit on your verandah in front of your bungalow in the djungle and share a cup of chai with your yoga-guru and have a pow-wow about your chi and your chakras, but when it comes to this particular core concept, you are forced to switch to latin.
... probably because "refleshment" sounds too much like a racial slur.

So:
- Is there anyone here who has experience in arranging music (and would be interested in helping me out)?
- Any suggestions for where to get sheet music online?
Two good questions.
I would personally start looking at the free MIDI sites, most composition programs can import them into sheets fairly easily.
There is that, yes.
Other than that, I be experience actually arranging them...
Psst. I think your pirate is showing, matey.

RE: The Official Status Thread
I'll throw in a question here, despite threads being free. If I get any answers I may spawn a thread later.
I am looking to set up a string ensemble with my daughter and her friends (3 violins, 1 cello). I am now hunting for music for them to play, which should be based on their interest but also what is playable. I've got a few candidates, but may need help in arranging the music for best effect. They have played for some three years now (in a youth orchestra as well), so not too advanced (but not too simple either).
So:

RE: Selenium
You are attempting to enter the worst part of an industry with more than its fair share of problems.
and the worst part? seleneum doesn't have any strong competitors, or if it does they're doing a fooking fantastic job of keeping it on the down low.
Shameless plug: A research colleague of mine developes a "visual test automation" application called EyeStudio that may be a useful competitor:
... but seeing that they also have a Selenium plugin, then maybe not.
TL;DR: You create a test script based on screenshots of the buttons, text areas or images to interact with.

@mikael_svahnberg A bit further to the west, as Prof. Calculus used to say. As I moved from there many years ago, I can say that I lived in Svängsta. Home of Abu Garcia, for the fishing maniacs out there. Actually planning to have my summer vacation go there next year, as it then will be 10 years since I moved away and I haven't been there since.
/me looks over his shoulder
That's where I grew up.
For the mechanical clock nerds, mechanical calculator nerds, and typewriter nerds out there, it is also the home of Halda.
But why on earth did you live there? It's thirty kilometers away from anything!

Do you have a counter-example?
I use plenty of OSS software that works for me and fits perfectly into my workflow. But anything that fits the general bill, no. Very little commercial software fits that bill either, though.

What if that is just the decoy tower, and the real one is perfectly camouflaged somewhere else?
What if the real tower was built sideways, so that it doesn't stick out of the ground that much? Think outside the box!
Indeed. Why do towers have to go upwards?

Well... Shit.
TL;DR: The town where I work decided to put up a webcam over the city. A local newspaper wrote about this and a discussion between the swedish navy and the town concerning that you can also see the naval base, as well as most entry routes to it. H.I. Sutton picked up on this and wrote a piece where he shows that even in low resolution you can still see which subs and other ships enter and exit, and at what times.
Fake update: The town has now removed the webcam.

RE: Free, decent, video editing software?
Hmm. Aren't you the one who is always ranting about how OSS developers have shit for brains and can't make usable software if their life depended on it?
@blakeyrat said in Free, decent, video editing software?:
my problem is "free video editors are all fucking garbage."
Ah. There you go.
Anyway, I use Shotcut which is free, and not entirely undecent. Then again, I also use Emacs and Conkeror so my assessment of "not garbage" might differ from yours.

RE: :baby_symbol: Parenting advice - you're gonna get hit
My six-year-old (seven in a month), the one that enumerates from zero, has started her "I want a phone" - campaign:
I want a phone. Many of my friends already have phones.
Note: Not "all", she is more precise than that. "Many".
(wife): Does X have a phone?
No.
Does Y have a phone?
Mom, it's better if I list the ones that have a phone.Basically, she spurns the
SELECT * FROM Friends
approach because it is inefficient and not helping her cause. -

RE: Complicators shirt
A few years back my FIL had a condition that (among other things) made it hard for him to keep warm, so I got him one of these:
https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/201b-21
(In case it doesn't onebox, it's a heated jacket that takes your standard M12 battery from your screwdriver).
So there exist at least one use case where this technology makes sense.

RE: Lorne is on vacation
@lorne-kates what the hell kind of slogan is that anyway "anything on the menu (at participating white castles), any time we're open"? Of course they only serve what is on their menu, and at a fast food joint I would bloody well expect to be able to get everything that's listed on the menu. And I don't expect them to serve me if they are closed. On the other hand, what fadt food joint closes at all these days, except for the graveyard shift?
It's like saying "you may stumble upon us when we are open, unless we see you first, and then we may serve you something off our menu, but only if we are participating. Seeing it's you, we just mightn't."

RE: The Official Status Thread
In the UK, it's illegal to keep erinaceus europaeus as a pet anyway. If you want a pet hedgehog, you have to get an atelerix albiventris.
But does the hedgehog know this? I had to ward off the little ward from running into our bedroom to hide.
Status: trying to convince our cat that it is ok to share his abundance of food with a hedgehog and two stray kittens who showed up today. There is a hare running around here too, but it seems more inclined to usurp his resting places than to steal his food.
