RE: Feature Request: Pending responses indicator
My fancy first idea for this is to show the small icons of current-viewing users at the bottom, with a visual marker to tell they're typing (or just have the response box open)

RE: Feature Request: Pending responses indicator
Invision Boards shows which users are currently looking at the thread, and which of those are working on a response. It's not real-time, but it works.
But regardless of whether it works, I don't know if it's useful.
THEN AGAIN by @codinghorror's own words: chat and forums share more DNA than expected.

RE: I can create my topic. I can't close it.
Actually if anything the rep system at SO works too well, in that users are incentivized to police other people's attempts to get rep in order to demonstrate the value of their own rep.
That's not working too well, that's unexpected backfire.

RE: Bug: "followed" counter on link increased without following
This topic is now closed. New replies are no longer allowed.
NO CHANGE REQUIRED LOL

RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
My "Haskell is never cool." posts now has no In Reply To linkbutton, even though both posts for which it could be meant are way up there.
-
RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
Shouldn't there be a link to my post then, left of the timestamp time-ago-stamp?
There was! I clicked it! I used it to verify that that was what happened!
-
RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
i can't
The fuck. All the in reply to buttonlinks have vanished for me.
But only on some posts and all of mine.
-
RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
But there isn't one on the top of your post, linking back to it.
I don't understand what you mean.
I just clicked Reply on one of your posts. S'all there's to it.
-
RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
But... that should still... In reply to link...
I clicked the reply button of one of your posts.Check out who I replied to with this one. He's a really cool guy.

RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
I get a notification @dhromed replied to my post
he actually just quoted @antiquarianOh, that's because I clicked a light Reply button and quoted from another post instead.
Whoopsie.

RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
Given the direction of the thread, let's expand a little on the machinist.
White as fuck. Medium-tall at 185cm, skinny but working on it. Physically fit. Literally fatless. Definitely introvert. Beard and hair from not doing anything about it (think Jesus without the actual moral superiority). Glasses that allow me to see further than 13cm (5 inch).
I like to dress well but don't like shopping or clothes upkeep.
Ladies may inquire at-- wait wrong kind of site.
I'm in the arantor and flabdablet boat when it comes to work.

RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
But I probably don't count as fitting a geek stereotype since I missed the biggest one of all: maleness.
FAAAAKE GEEEEEK GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRLLLLLL

RE: Cannot drag selected text
As a place-marker when scrolling.
I only need that in very uniform walls of text and when I'm tired. A Discourse page certainly provides ample eye hooks.

RE: Poll: Shouldn't the spoilers plugin be disabled?
If we really want to make TDWTF more annoying we can just install the marquee/blink plugin and be done with it.
Yess.

RE: There's a meta question if ever I saw one
The latter is what I took to be the scorched earth policy, not the former.
I agree. @codinghorror called the former scorched earth.

RE: سمَـَّوُوُحخ ̷̴̐خ ̷̴̐خ ̷̴̐خ امارتيخ ̷̴̐خ
This new text effect you are going for is making me dizzy. I work standing up, really hoping I do not wake up in a pool of blood with a broken chin.
You and abarker could do with a firmware update for your visual cortex.

RE: Solar Roadways?
Wouldn't a space rocket be more suitable for that?
'twas an okay movie.
I was hoping for Solaris/Clooney dreamy space fantasy but they had to go Event Horizon after a while which KINDA BROKE THE MOOD.

RE: Closed Poll: Shall @the_dragon consume @codinghorror?
DC has a mystical method for calculating a post's entropy.
You can always slam an in there.

RE: Anagram Est Omen
I have 100001 results.
let A = anagram count, n = amount of letters in the username
A = a(n!)
where simply 0 < a < 1?

RE: The official hack testing thread
I don't like those developers who are all OH OH NEW EXPERIMENTAL TECHNOLOGY I MUST USE IT IN PRODUCTION *forcefully cums in pants*
I am in a nonhappy mood today and a little tired. Can you tell? -
RE: The official hack testing thread
Oh, it's some kind of crazy SVG bullshit.
@Arantor is going to be real happy when I say this blur thing is junk.
-
RE: The official hack testing thread
The entire blurred image disappears when I hover it, and the text isn't blurred at all.
-
RE: Solar Roadways?
the road is lined up with the sun, which is going down / coming up and the old and new lines look the same.
Drive into the sun.

RE: Poll: Best Mobile OS
Is that one from the time before or after SE "dumb" phones became shit?
I don't know, this is my second phone since 2002 or thereabouts.
-
RE: Spoiler alert....
FFS you're actually going with 'fucking users' eyesight' as a spoiler technique?
Do dropshadows freak out your eyes too? It's a shame you don't have glasses. If you could take them off, you'd be used to blurry shit.

RE: There's a meta question if ever I saw one
we have to disable useful functionality all the time?
Useful how?once you can purge individual edits in the history, you could turn it back on and job-done?
Yes. -
RE: Windows 7 install can't find DVD drive
they rebranded Vista as Mojave and apparently people loved it.
I've seen interviews where people, when asked directly, claim to love bands that do not exist.
Is that a thing Jimmy Kimmel does? I can't remember.
Forgot about Vista. But doesn't everyone?
I'm still on Vista.
I don't care. -
RE: Closed Poll: How much bullshit do you put up with...
I voted Other because I wanted to vote for the cat picture.
-
RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
No, it's a movie with a skinny guy.
-
RE: How many of regulars here actually fit the "geek" stereotypes?
I'm a twig.
Have you seen The Machinist?
-
RE: Poll: Best Mobile OS
I got this one.
I don't know if whatever it uses can be called an OS.

Anagram Est Omen
I was about to make a dummy non-admin user for testing, and wanted to see what sort of anagrams my username would make.
I lol'd on the inside.

RE: There's a meta question if ever I saw one
I don't see why public revision history is such a hugely important feature that turning it off can be called "scorched earth".
I think the problem of malicious edit-switcheroo is mostly imagined (I think that because I've never seen it), and the problem of unremovable information is a real one. See arantor's post. Complete post deletion does not address that. That's scorched earth.
-
RE: Closed Poll: Do you have Discourse Syndrome
It turns out the timestamp is also the long-sought direkt link to the post
Timestamp as direct link is how most sites do it. And it's not hidden, like keyboard shortcuts. So yeah, it's plenty intuitive, I think.
-
RE: There's a meta question if ever I saw one
The main argument behind turning off public revision history is that someone can't edit out sensitive information. Oh shit I accidentally added these email addresses/phone numbers/etc. Now you're fucked.
This is not a fictional concern:
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/registration-emails-still-dont-work/1139/21?u=dhromed
So in my book it weighs more heavily than the transparency argument, on which I said this in the staff discussion:
@PJH said:
I thought the public edit history was an interesting new feature
I thought it was interesting as well, in the light of transparency, but users are not public figures, so that ideal doesn't apply.Because really.
Looking back I'm not sure about the values of ninja-edit and normal-edit windows. Maybe increase them to 5 minutes and several days?
