Ahh, I remember Google Video, good times. I think it worked better in 2008 than YouTube does today.

Made the mistake of trying to read this thread while sick and have a headache.
My headache is much worse now.
-
Yeah… I just hit End; my cyberside will handle the rest
-
I want to read the whole thing (again - I read it on CS) but I got to like post 150, having fixed a lot of broken quotes along the way, and got bored.
It's bookmarked for another day
-
Oh yeah, I guess you TL4s can actually fix up broken stuff rather than just looking at it and being annoyed by it...

I'm just posting here so I can claim 7+ years of activity in the same thread. Thanks guys.

Are people still clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses? Even after all this time?!

What if I want to search video with embedded text files with embedded video? What's your solution for that? What I if only have one single file in my home directory with all of my stuff in it? What if I ran out of questions after the second one, but wanted to throw in a third one anyway?
-
What does @codinghorrorbot have to say about this?

I just make a screen capture of whatever I wrote while scrolling, and then search for text using OCR. So much simpler when I just want to read the document: no need for scrolling, and since I record everything as mp4 I can just embed it in a webpage when I want to share it. That way I don't have to count on anyone having Office, or a PDF reader — all they need is a browser!

ONLY ONE HUNDRED MORE! Can this thread make it? Can it reach the new record heights of two THOUSAND replies?
-
...did you edit a summon into my post and then remove it again?
-
Maybe.
-
Naww. @loopback0 doing something like that? Never.

Detailed archiving of your info; be it family albums or music files will be an ongoing task but well worthwhile.
With a few keystrokes you can automatically catalog existing "MPG" video, "MP3" audio, "JPG" pictures and "TXT" email records & notes etc.
Moments later you will be randomly sampling your data treasures. It takes some time for Your personal database to become large enough to make searching interesting. If your memory is short then not so long.
This app plows through text files at 20,000,000 CPS and beyond on a 8 year old LapTop..
I have completed over 4 Dozen Telephone and CableSystem billing conversions (ETL) 95% of that data came
in text files, a small percent was packed integer and real numbers etc. The Export data included toll files, work orders, customer details etc. These data were no problem for this app. Many of these IT jobs were for some of the largest companies in the Western Canada and US.
The so called "Big Data" isn't that BIG for today's computers. I have more personal data than all the ETLs combined!!!To keep You in touch with the massive amounts of DATA you'll collect; the app can randomly sample Video or audio segments as easily as family pictures.
Text data can be displayed "in context" or "matching lines only" along with match counts, line counts and elapsed time.Without a Random option; computer resources go unused and your data mining tools will fall short.
Video playback options such as Fast Forward, Slow Motion and Large font captioning mixed with Video segments are a few of the
main features. There is no more useful app than this.See the thread "nobody shares knowledge better than this" for all the details

Wait, was that post imported, or did Swampy just post on WTDWTF?!?!?!?!??!
-
I was wondering about the same thing. Actually, I saw the spinner as you posted and was looking at it expecting a reply or something.
Then again, timestamps seem to get imported, so this would be a legit new post it seems.
-
Now we just need someone to take Swamp at face value, and we're set.

Swampy wasn't re-hosted.
Swampy just posted.

did Swampy just post on WTDWTF?
Yes, he did. It's not his first post here since the migration, although it may be his first since the import.

There are these things called links and they allow you to direct someone to a thread without discosearching

Addendum: Where did the little linked thread thingy go?
Doesn't happen if you include only the topic slug -- which, by the way, is a terrible thing to do because now that link will 404 in a few seconds when someone changes the thread title.

Doing It Wrong(tm) is the best way to Do It!
somehow I thought that was the post number...

Guys, stop talking about Discourse.
I think you're making Swampy jealous.

Why? Discourse and SSDS should get along famously, what with the ability do download all your posts as PURE TEXT! without all that HTML bullshit. Perfect for searching it in SSDS!

This brings back memories. Where are @spenk, @derula, and @belgariontheking? And probably several more I don't remember off the top of my head.

Last I heard, there was an unspecified-something going on with @derula IRL...which sucks, because his/her presence here would have either saved us from one minor Blakeyrant or caused a forum food fight.

I remember reading this thread ages ago, the phrase/nickname/honoured title "derulaswamp" always stuck with me...
